From an ease perspective the 40k start sets make it simple to test the rules out with minimal commitment: https://www.warhammer.com/en-US/shop/warhammer-40000/start-here

All sold out on their site, but available at plenty of other places.

They just announced a similar Starter Set for Kill Team that looks like a good way to test out this game: https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/B3EtzIYC/kill-team-starter-set-space-marines-vs-plague-marines/

If your ready to pick a faction and get painting/playing I think the 40k Combat Patrol format might be one of the easier options to pick up and play. No need to make an army list, the core roles are free, only needing you worry about knowing the stats/abilities for 4 or 5 squads. https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/7VlmRolQ/download-the-new-warhammer-40000-rules-for-free-right-here/

Kill Team is less models (7-10 per side), but they are often almost all unique and it really needs you to get some terrain set up to play right. But there are "lite" rules available for free right now that make it easier to try out: https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/downloads/kill-team/

The Global Mission scenario has a giant plantary defense gun going off at the start of turn three so everyone had to seek cover by the end of turn two.

Between that need and the sheer amounts of firepower the Aquilon were laying down as they descended this building had four Necrons holed up inside it.

I had my Tempestor bark a command to boost a trooper and run over to fight through the doorway. She lopped up the first Despotek and a charge attempt by another Necron ended with a "Ran into my Power Sword ten times" scenario.

One of the most hilarious moments from the game: I had a whole plan to drop my Precursor onto the Technomancer and give him the old slice and dice. Bu, before I got the chance, Techy here charged my Gunner.

What should have been an easy kill for the Necron boss went all wrong when he only scored one hit and my Gunner stepped up with a tripple-crit fist attack. Since I had softened up the Technomancer earlier in the turn by leaping my Marksman across the alley from the third floor of one building to the second floor of another and taking a potshot, the melee blow was enough to put the leader out of action before it did anything particularly useful.

In which Lemmy stops formatting posts from Pixelfed in the same way that it always has before.

He's the classic metal version. I think I got him from eBay decades ago and only was ready to paint him up now that he's been pushed out.

I've also got a metal Corbulo that I think was from the same second hand lot. I'll probably get to him when the new Sanguinary Priest drops.

Edit: spelling

Lol, more that seeing the new guy reminded me thati had Chaplain-with-Ball-Gag at home. It's a timeless look, apparently!

Good suggestion. If I do a "real" one I think a transfer or two could help that.

Someone asked about how the backdrop book looked with epic scale minis so I did a fun little photo shoot. I only have the one rhino at that scale and only the one bit of terrain to pose it on.

These books and some new ones are on Kickstarter for another day or so:

Testing out a new Lemmy client instead of cross-posting right from PixelFed.

One of my goals for this year is to finish more of the projects I left in various states previously. Since I am about to do some Aeldari Kill Teams I grabbed the Rangers off the shelf where they had been assembled, primed, and only got as far as the yellow earlier.

After these guys I started to do combo bone/black weapons because it seemed to dull this way. I might retouch the faces later, "rosy" ended up just "pinky".

Fun dynamic poses and it feels nice to finish them up after a long delay.

For anyone in the US, at least, it finally showed as oh stock at Barnes and Noble. Lot of great sculpts in there.

I wasn't as sure about how "40k" these guys would look back when they were previewed but I think they ended up firing the aesthetic just right. Scrap tech, plenty of chaos, begging for some grim dark colorations.

Von Ryan's Leapers and Barbgaunts. I'm not as pleased with the yellow-on-purple guns this time as I was with that scheme on the Termagants. May need to revisit that later.

Also need to find a good neon tufts to help the bases give a better sense of space like @shepherd@kbin.social suggested.

C&C welcome!

Testing out some markup to share images from pixelfed:

Rounding out the five from the Combat Patrol. Not having to care about which weapon variant they use was very freeing.

C&C welcome!

They will need some toxic slime on the bases to really sell it.

C&C welcome!

Finished the last piece for the new Necron combat patrol right before picking up Leviathan.

On to some Tyranids next!

Minis are from Heresy Lab. C&C welcome.

With the rules for the new Combat Patrols dropping today (https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/06/20/free-combat-patrol-rule-downloads-let-you-fight-fast-balanced-skirmishes-in-the-new40k/) I decided to check whether I ever finished a full patrol worth of a given faction.

Blood Angels is close so I primed their Impulsor to get that done.

Necrons only need the Doomstalker so that might not be too bad either.
