The Oregon Trail.

I might have the exception to this. I’m able to dual boot my work laptop, as can the other engineers in my department. So it’s effectively a Linux machine under my exclusive administration. The only request from my IT department was how to format the host name.

I’m still not taking chances with that thing though, even when on my home network. The rules exist even if there’s a 99.99% chance they won’t be enforced. I have nothing to gain from doing nefarious shit on it just to prove a point, lol.

There are so many ways to respond to this stupidity, but I think it boils down to not celebrating being an asshole.

Being an asshole is not manly.

Being an asshole is not strong.

Being an asshole is not being a leader.

Hating everything and everyone does not mean you have elite tastes and are above it all.

And going back to manliness, such concern over it and the superficial “virtue” signaling of it with drinks, clothes, trucks, and tacticool punisher skull caliber stuff is the least manly shit I can imagine. How can you even take yourself seriously when you’re a fragile walking cliche?

We should all be decent, empathetic, and compassionate enough people that the demographic breakdown doesn’t create a negative effect like that.

I’m one of the many cis dudes here, and I just cannot get offended when it gets pointed out that other dudes can be assholes. Or that other Americans can be assholes. Or other humans, for that matter.

Can’t take calls? Don’t threaten ME with a good time!

This is why we Americans may be happy to hang out and chat on /c/fuckcars, and try to vote for sane transportation policies, but then also be like lol no I can’t actually get rid of my car.

Every big American city you’ve ever heard of is solid “car” except for the heart of New York. Now just imagine what it’s like for the folks in rural areas or even in the suburbs of medium cities.

This is a pretty sparsely populated country on average, and it’s all designed assuming everybody is in a car. Sidewalks and bike lanes get sprinkled around where there’s room and desire for them.

It’s a lose-lose situation when somebody sees money and assets as the end goal rather than as one of the various tools we use in trying to find a comfortable enjoyable existence.

We live across the street plus a little bit from our kid’s elementary school. We don’t even get the option to use the bus. Either we pick up and drop off every day or he walks on his own. And he’s still little so realistically it’s we drive him or walk him.

But at the crossing for the main street the school is on, there’s a police officer serving as crossing guard every single day at start & end of day. So maybe our district took the sensible approach?

This comment inspired me to go turn off microphone, camera, Bluetooth, and local network access for every app. I’ll reenable as necessary.

Yeah it’s right up there on the list of what shareholders need to survive:

Water

Food

Solid CAGR of investment portfolio

Shelter

Human contact

Etc

(CAGR being Compound Annual Growth Rate)

Making my first Lemmy post because this moment in my DS9 rewatch made me think of you all.

I think I’ll call her Captain Gilora Lochley.

Also, DS9 is even better than I remember. It’s been a while!
