thanks, this worked

Hardware: 2014 macbook, nuked macos, clean xubuntu 24.04 installation

I never experienced this with my other notebook, a 2016 model from a Taiwanese vendor, forgot the name.

On the macbook: I plug in the external HDD, xubuntu recognizes and opens the volume, I can use vlc to play video files (mostly mkv, x265) but then, 2 to 5 minutes later, xubuntu reconnects to the HDD, meaning the connection stopped and vlc stops playing the file. Not big files, 250 to 500 MiB, 1080p

It's impossible to watch a 30 minute show.

This never happened with the 2016 notebook and on this notebook I also installed xubuntu 24.04, so I'm assuming this is a hardware issue.

Is it so? Any way to avoid this?

the macbook is an Intel Core i5-4278U CPU @ 2.60GHz, the other notebook an Intel Core i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz

I'm on partition disks, configuring LVM on a computer with 2 drives: /dev/nvme01 is the device I want to install in, SCSI2 is a storage HDD I do not want to format, I need the data.

What bugs me is 'the partition tables of the following devices are changed': both drives.

Am I going to lose data in the second drive, SCSI2, if I proceed? Should I physically remove the second drive instead?

ETA: thanks for your input

long time xubuntu user, now on 24.04.

debian comes with embedded programs like libreoffice, which I use, but versions are very old and I like using the newest versions available. with debian 12.5 I could use flatpak to get the newest version, but could I then get rid of the pre installed old version?

debian's default graphics look also prehistoric. Can I change that installing other styles? (that's what they're called in xubuntu: adwaita, greybird...)

with debian you are asked to choose the environment: xfce, mate... how troublesome is to change those after installation?

Surprising that debian 12.5 is 0.7 GiB large, whereas the xubuntu 24.04 is 4 GiB. This doesn't mean that xubuntu has bloatware, but simply much more pre installed packages, right?

then how come I've always torrented without editing the router?

I've used privoxy, can that be the reason?

os: xubuntu 24.04

firewall: ufw

torrent program: transmission

On transmission I opened port 51401

On a terminal I executed sudo ufw allow 51401, which opens both tcp and udp ports for both ipv4 and ipv6. This is called forwarding, right?

I'm following https://github.com/transmission/transmission/blob/main/docs/Port-Forwarding-Guide.md but apparently I still don't get it

ETA: thanks for your input, issue has been solved

I need to use one of these https://github.com/Skyedra/UnspamifyUbuntu not to get an invitation to join ubuntu pro each time I upgrade.

this never happened before. To me this is invasive, but otherwise it has worked well so far.

I found out that xubuntu spams users including me, which to me is a no go.

I'm looking for a linux based ad free distro that lets me work with libreoffice, vlc, tbb, transmission, okular, pdfarranger, hexchat, gimp and ocr.

I'm going to use it to edit text, watch movies, download multimedia, chat and edit audio with audacity.

it's not going to be a server and I'd like to work with the terminal as much as possible. At the same time, I'm a newbie.

package ubuntu-advantage-tools is not installed, so not removed.

I can however remove ubuntu-advantage-desktop-daemon, together with apturl: common and apturl software-properties-gtk.

Should I?

this never happened before, it's also not happening ion my backup computer (same OS, xubuntu 24.04).

Message: get more security updates through ubuntu pro with esm-apps enabled, learn more about ubuntu pro

How do I get rid of it.

Ubuntu never advertised itself so blatantly.

commands are:

iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 3389 -j ACCEPT > to open only that tcp port

sudo ufw enable transmission > to open the whole program

being a newbie I'd say it's safer to only open a determined port with iptables. What do you think?

I'm trying to open a port for transmission but before I get to know either of the 2 options I'd like to know what you recommend and why.

OS is xubuntu 24.04

I sometimes write in German and French, which means non ASCII characters.

I don´t know if I just need to edit keyboard preferences to a different kind of keyboard (like US international) or if I must install whole language packages. I wouldn´t mind having the dictionaries and autocorrect for libreoffice, but after selecting the languages it also downloaded help guides in these languages and several regional variants of English (za, gi, ca...), which I don´t need.

or is copying the bookmarks as a html file the only way?

ETA: thank you for your input, problem solved.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/16193001

due to reasons I only have my tbb/ff bookmarks saved as jsonlz4 files, 10 backups.

Ideally, I could recover all those including the structure, but Id settle for the urls (and hopefully the names).

thanks
