I strongly encourage instance admins to defederate from Facebook/Threads/Meta.

They aren't some new, bright-eyed group with no track record. They're a borderline Machiavellian megacorporation with a long and continuing history of extremely hostile actions:

  • Helping enhance genocides in countries
  • Openly and willingly taking part in political manipulation (see Cambridge Analytica)
  • Actively have campaigned against net neutrality and attempted to make "facebook" most of the internet for members of countries with weaker internet infra - directly contributing to their amplification of genocide (see the genocide link for info)
  • Using their users as non-consenting subjects to psychological experiments.
  • Absolutely ludicrous invasions of privacy - even if they aren't able to do this directly to the Fediverse, it illustrates their attitude.
  • Even now, they're on-record of attempting to get instance admins to do backdoor discussions and sign NDAs.

Yes, I know one of the Mastodon folks have said they're not worried. Frankly, I think they're being laughably naive >.<. Facebook/Meta - and Instagram's CEO - might say pretty words - but words are cheap and from a known-hostile entity like Meta/Facebook they are almost certainly just a manipulation strategy.

In my view, they should be discarded as entirely irrelevant, or viewed as deliberate lies, given their continued atrocious behaviour and open manipulation of vast swathes of the population.

Facebook have large amounts of experience on how to attack and astroturf social media communities - hell I would be very unsurprised if they are already doing it, but it's difficult to say without solid evidence ^.^

Why should we believe anything they say, ever? Why should we believe they aren't just trying to destroy a competitor before it gets going properly, or worse, turn it into yet another arm of their sprawling network of services, via Embrace, Extend, Extinguish - or perhaps Embrace, Extend, Consume would be a better term in this case?

When will we ever learn that openly-manipulative, openly-assimilationist corporations need to be shoved out before they can gain any foothold and subsume our network and relegate it to the annals of history?

I've seen plenty of arguments claiming that it's "anti-open-source" to defederate, or that it means we aren't "resilient", which is wrong ^.^:

  • Open source isn't about blindly trusting every organisation that participates in a network, especially not one which is known-hostile. Threads can start their own ActivityPub network if they really want or implement the protocol for themselves. It doesn't mean we lose the right to kick them out of most - or all - of our instances ^.^.
  • Defederation is part of how the fediverse is resilient. It is the immune system of the network against hostile actors (it can be used in other ways, too, of course). Facebook, I think, is a textbook example of a hostile actor, and has such an unimaginably bad record that anything they say should be treated as a form of manipulation.

Edit 1 - Some More Arguments

In this thread, I've seen some more arguments about Meta/FB federation:

  • Defederation doesn't stop them from receiving our public content:
    • This is true, but very incomplete. The content you post is public, but what Meta/Facebook is really after is having their users interact with content. Defederation prevents this.
  • Federation will attract more users:
    • Only if Threads makes it trivial to move/make accounts on other instances, and makes the fact it's a federation clear to the users, and doesn't end up hosting most communities by sheer mass or outright manipulation.
    • Given that Threads as a platform is not open source - you can't host your own "Threads Server" instance - and presumably their app only works with the Threads Server that they run - this is very unlikely. Unless they also make Threads a Mastodon/Calckey/KBin/etc. client.
    • Therefore, their app is probably intending to make itself their user's primary interaction method for the Fediverse, while also making sure that any attempt to migrate off is met with unfamiliar interfaces because no-one else can host a server that can interface with it.
    • Ergo, they want to strongly incentivize people to stay within their walled garden version of the Fediverse by ensuring the rest remains unfamiliar - breaking the momentum of the current movement towards it. ^.^
  • We just need to create "better" front ends:
    • This is a good long-term strategy, because of the cycle of enshittification.
    • Facebook/Meta has far more resources than us to improve the "slickness" of their clients at this time. Until the fediverse grows more, and while they aren't yet under immediate pressure to make their app profitable via enshittification and advertising, we won't manage >.<
    • This also assumes that Facebook/Meta won't engage in efforts to make this harder e.g. Embrace, Extend, Extinguish/Consume, or social manipulation attempts.
    • Therefore we should defederate and still keep working on making improvements. This strategy of "better clients" is only viable in combination with defederation.

~~Texto riscado~~ Risca o texto
``` Código em bloco``` Formata um bloco de código
--- ou *** Insere uma linha horizontal
Notas
Para enviar imagens, recomenda-se utilizar um serviço personalizado para o armazenamento de imagens, o motivo é apresentado aqui. Você pode usar o imgbb.
Quem é Blink-182? (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 years ago by I_like_bread@lemmy.world to c/brasil
Eu sei que eu tô atrasada com essa pergunta. No meio da história do submarino com os ricos que implodiu eu vi sendo comentado que o filho do bilionário que estava com ele indo ver os destroços do Titanic gostava dessa banda e tinha ido no show pouco tempo antes. Isso deveria ser algo diferente ou absurdo ou é só uma curiosidade mesmo?
achei muito interessante uma instacia br, mas para isso funcionar acredito que se deve ter uma mutiplicidade de opinião, sendo assim…gostaria de saber quem pode estar aqui? ( ou é bem vindo) esquerda? direita? libertario?comunista? socialistas? sua visão é ter realmente multiplas opniões, ou ser algo segregado a certo publico?
Estou tentando entender como funciona esse fediverso e compatibilidade entre os serviços.
Se eu vou no mastodon.social e busco por @lemmy@lemmy.ml, eu encontro a comunidade e posso ver os posts. Porque eu nao encontro nenhuma comunidade do lemmy.eco.br?
cross-posted from: https://lemmit.online/post/14692
In the short time since this instance and bot launched, I've been seeing the same questions resurface multiple times. This is totally understandable, since the concept of a Fediverse is still new to most (myself included), and this server is not like the others.
Q: What is Lemmit?
A: Lemmit is a Lemmy instance specifically designed for archiving Reddit content. Users can request new subreddits to be included in the archiving process by posting in the !requests@lemmit.online community. It is powered by an open source python bot, which periodically checks the request list, adds new requests to the queue, and continuously monitors the Hot feed of those subs for new posts to cross-post here.
Q: Does it synchronize comments?
A: No, that would be impossible. Considering there are thousands of posts already on Lemmit, many of them having at least several hundred comments on Reddit, often buried in deep layers, it simply wouldn't be feasible to index those for more than a few posts, let alone keep them up to date.
Unfortunately, this means that archiving certain subreddits, such as Ask Historians/Men/Women/Hyperintelligentshadesofthecolourblue-type subs, is going to be rather pointless.
Q: Can it send comments back to Reddit?
A: No, it cannot. The purpose is to help bootstrap the Lemmy platform, not to serve as a bridge between the two networks. Also, see the answer about synchronizing comments.
Q: Can I request any subreddit?
A: Technically, yes. However, as the list of subs grows, the time it takes to update all of them will also increase. I do not have strict guidelines in place for this, so I'm relying on your common sense (hoooo boy). At some point, I will probably have to either stop accepting new requests or disable scraping for very low-traffic communities.
Q: Does this use the API? Will it keep working after July 1st?
A: Nope, it uses a combination of the public feed and scraping old.reddit.com. So, as long as those are still available, it will continue working. And even if they close those sources, there will probably be new ways to achieve the same effect. "Content, eh, finds a way."
Q: What started this?
A: Okay, nobody asked this, but I'm going to tell you anyway. After Reddit made it clear that they are effectively killing third-party apps and implementing plenty of other anti-end user decisions, I realized that I would either have to accept not being able to access my time-wasting content or have to do so in a rather uncomfortable way (either through the official app or old.reddit.com for as long as they'll allow it to exist).
Being a stubborn developer, naturally, I chose option C: Have my own Reddit. With blackjack, and hookers. This way, I would still be able to access my beloved content without being beholden to Reddit's mood swings and abusive relationship tendencies.
Besides that, I also know that Content is King. So I'm order to counter the network effect (No users because no content, No content because no users), I figured it would be better to have some inorganic content to bootstrap the adoption of Lemmy.
Q: This is spam, can you stop?
A: First off all, I apologise for the inconvenience. All you have to do is block @bot@lemmit.online, and none of its posts will ever show up on your instance.
Obviously I could stop, because running this server and software is only ever going to cost me time and money. But for the reasons listed above, I still think this server is a useful addition to the lemmyverse at this time. But I'm looking forward to the day where I can turn the bot off because it's no longer needed.
Q: Are NSFW subreddits allowed?
A: Absolutely. Like I said: Blackjack and hookers.
Q: My request isn't picked up by the bot!
A: That isn't a question. But yeah, the process isn't flawless yet. I'm trying to iron out all the bugs as I encounter them. In the meantime, feel free to re-request the subreddit by making a second post. No harm done.
Q: No new posts are showing up at all on Lemmit
A: If no posts are appearing on the Lemmit Frontpage (sorted by NEW), it's possible that the bot has crashed or is stuck on something. Since no software is flawless, this sometimes happens. I usually fix this as soon as I'm aware, and I'm happy to say that these kinds of fatal errors are becoming less and less frequent. However, they may still occur, and as a human with needs of sleep and other responsibilities, I'm not always able to fix them immediately.
Q: Posts aren't showing up on my instance, what's up?
A: First, check if any posts show up on the frontpage (see previous question). Other than that - I wish I had an answer to this. I'm not an expert on the inner workings of the Lemmy service. If you're an experienced Lemmy admin and think you may have a clue, please reach out.
Q: When are you updating to v0.18?
A: There have been some varying reports on its stability. For now I will be waiting until v0.18.1 rolls out.
Encontrei essa aleatoriamente no youtube e me parece muito alguma coisa que minha familia tocava nos churrascos, mas não consigo achar muito sobre os artistas. Quando eu procuro aparece um monte de coisa de outros grupos maiores ou só as musicas. Queria saber mais sobre os artistas. Bola da vez deles também é bem legal.
