There's an email to sign up for when they restock. It looks like it's not available on indiegogo for preorder yet though?

I have a problem. I like to have all of my games downloaded on the gaming system I play on. It's the closest thing to 'owning' the game you purchased in this digital age. I have around 400-500 games on steam, which are around 5 TB or so in total (thanks Ark).

Since the steam deck only has a micro SD card slot and an NVME 2230 slot, options are limited without getting too creative. An ironic fortune for proton is that not all of my games are compatible with SteamOS, so I don't need 5tb+ necessarily, just enough for the games that do work.

So I ended up purchasing these:

A relatively inexpensive experiment, aside from the micro SD cards, which can still be used as needed, or find their way to other uses if the experiment fails.

I only needed 3 SD cards because I already had a 1tb one before this. So that totals to 4 TB of micro SD cards plus my 256gb nvme, which I could upgrade for a total of 5gb

The biggest issue I'm facing with this setup is that those USB adapters are unreliable, and often disconnect randomly. Two of them have already just died, so Im going to opt for some more familiar brands like this SanDisk MobileMate USB 3.0 microSD Card Reader: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G5JV2B5 and see how that goes.

The dock itself seems good enough. Especially for the price. And the SD cards are holding up.

Anyway, I thought I'd share my little journey.

Do you have any accessories that are a must have for you?

I was a big fan of the GPD Win 1 and 2, and I was disappointed GPD abandoned the clamshell design. For many reasons I think it's better than the tablet design that the newer Win, ROG Ally, Steam Deck etc have, but I guess it's just harder to make. And with the Win Mini having the newest Ryzen APUs, it will blow the Win 2 out of the water in performance. We'll finally have a capable clamshell UMPC!

My only concerns are the size/weight and the price, but I suppose you can't have everything. I probably won't afford to get it on IGG but at least it's being made at all and I can hopefully get it eventually hah

P.S. Hi Dax looks like I'm the only person in this sub (or whatever it's called on this platform) besides you lol. I just joined Lemmy. Hello!

How would you all feel if we had a weekly show-off thread to show off anything regarding your handhelds? Could be the gaming system, a new accessory, case, etc.

According to the article:

The higher-end CPU packs similar power to the Z1 Extreme found in the ROG Ally, but in a slightly different form factor. You’ll get 12CUs with 768 shaders on the Radeon 780M graphics, backed by either 32GB or 64GB of LPDDR5x memory. Keeping things cool is a “PC-grade large turbofan” as well as “thick dual heat pipes” which increase the thermal efficiency by 50% and have 35% better heat dissipation.

I have 2:

  • Steam Deck 256gb
  • GPD Win Max 2020

Willing to answer any questions about them if you'd like.

Fun fact: I got Diablo 4 to run at smooth framerate (30+ fps) on the GPD Win Max. It wasn't pretty, but it was playable😆.

What do you have/want?

I personally don't even mind the lower performance ceiling. It's much more pocketable than the other options. Maybe the Loki Zero will be small too?

An aside - anyone else tired of all the click-baity YouTube titles and thumbnails? Some of my favorite YouTubers for steam deck and other handhelds are doing this so much now. Looking at you NerdNest.

I'm probably in the minority, but I'd love to see something like this, practical or not. I'd buy it just to play some emulated games, and other light games like minecraft, D2R, D1 DevilutionX, etc.

Also so I can have another excuse to buy some madcatz accessories 😆

Hey all, I noticed there are a few sales going on right now for handheld gaming PCs, for those that were interested in jumping in on the fun :)

Steam Deck

  • 64GB Model 10% off ($359.10 from $399 US)
  • 256GB Model is 15% off ($449.65 from $529 US)
  • 512GB Model is 20% off ($519.20 from $649 $US)

AYANEO

  • AYANEO 2 is 30% off ($1099 US)
  • AYANEO AIR x B.Duck is 30% off ($759 US)
  • AYANEO AIR Pro is 30% off ($699 US)
  • AYANEO AIR is 30% off ($549 US)

Oddly, the prices seem to be too precise to be discounted, but they have it noted at these percentages on their site. I'd double check to be sure

AOKZOE

  • [REFURBISHED] AOKZOE A1 is ~44% off ($599 from $1079 US)

Anbernic

Side note

If you're looking for a cheaper option to get into the x86 handheld gaming sphere, there's also the Loki Zero that's apparently available for preorder. Only $249. It's the absolute cheapest new x86 gaming handheld I think you can get right now. It's using an Athlon Silver 3050e for its main processor and GPU, so I wouldn't expect many, if any, triple A titles to run on it without some serious compromises in graphical fidelity and/or framerate. I still love that this thing will exist.
