The FBI started as an extrajudicial hit squad to murder folk-hero bank robbers and the creator/first director was a deeply fucked-up man who used the Bureau to hunt down homosexuals because he was one and hated himself so much. It has never been a morally upright organization.

Thanks for the context. I've figured they're an extension of the white supremacist, colonial fucked system (which implies a lot of shittiness all on its own), but am not very clear on the details. Do you have any sources you could recommend on the history?
