fun fact, in dutch a potato is called an earth-apple

In Dutch Aardpeer is the Jerusalem Artichoke not potato

Jerusalem Artichoke are a type of sunflower and potatoes are nightshades so not the same type of plant even though they both are grown for their tubers.
Some dialects of German have this, too.
yeah, austrian german is using the "Erdapfel" too, but over the last 40+ years of german TV the "Kartoffel" has become a lot more common
At one point in time, all fruit/vegetable was called "apple."
