If you have a politician that you rank above others, then by definition, that is your favorite politician.

Favorite just means most preferred.
Preferred means favoured, not necessarily favorite
Yes, but they specifically qualify that by saying "most preferred". And the one who is favored most above all is by definition the favorite.
