I'm gonna beat a dead horse here but, the more I see the ramifications of the Palestinian genocide unfolding now the more I find the whole Xinjiang propaganda period baffling. I dare hoping that a lot of baby leftists will look back at it and realise what a genocide really is and how little the US state and media really care

[-] DankZedong@lemmygrad.ml 80 points 10 months ago

Yeah, like we have not even seen one clear footage of the Chinese doing evil shit in Xinjiang that hasn't been debunked. Either the Chinese are insanely good in hiding their atrocities, or, you know, they aren't real.

China is so good at genocide that it can prevent any refugee outflows to neighboring Turkic Muslim countries and hide all video evidence in a day and age where every person has a video camera in their pocket.

China is so bad at genocide that its ingenious schemes can be foiled by one plucky German religious zealot and an Australian think tank funded by Raytheon.

It's so good at hiding a genocide that they can hide a genocide in a part of the country where you can freely travel to as a tourist, where you can see thousands of videos of on YouTube

[-] GaryLeChat@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Is that entirely accurate? I've seen some videos online that you need to get permission from the government (some kind of visa) to travel to Tibet and Xinjiang autonomous region.

I could be wrong or not have the full picture, I'd imagine if that's the case though, it's to prevent foreign agents from entering the regions to foment unrest.

[-] DankZedong@lemmygrad.ml 34 points 10 months ago

Tibet is stricter but you can freely go to Xinjiang. There are places you need a permit for, for example some highways, but that's not all too weird.

[-] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 21 points 10 months ago

I need permission from the government (exactly a visa) to go see the Grand Canyon

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 14 points 10 months ago

It's just a travel document it's very easy to get one. Just like getting a tourist visa anywhere else but you have to check in a bit more often. This is also not exclusive to Xinjiang or Tibet.

so bad at genocide the UN census of uyghur populations in genocided areas actually increased by millions in the time frames alleged

[-] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 45 points 10 months ago

I think that's undercut somewhat by the fact that Palestinians have increased their population despite being genocided by Israel. IMO it's also necessary to look at all the indicators of welfare for Uyghur people like life expectancy, literacy, income, access to healthcare, etc, and how they've all steadily improved

[-] ghost_of_faso2@lemmygrad.ml 36 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

To be fair on the population stat, even the most war hawk minds admit that the re-education camps have closed down now and that its no longer ongoing. With China if its being alleged that they have carried out a genocide, you would look at population numbers; A genocide by definition would significantly reduce the amount of people.

Like we see with Palestine, the genocide did not start until recently, only the precursor too it (ethnic cleansing, ghettoization, devaluing of life, apartheid etc) but it would be fair to say the actual genocide (the systematic mass killing) of them has just begun. If its successful or not will be determined by the amount of people killed and if they manage to remove the ethnicity from Gaza entirely, which is the goal.

clearly, the most reasonable explanation is that China is so technologically advanced that they can imprison every single Uyghur while hiding all evidence from other people in China and the rest of the world

[-] DankZedong@lemmygrad.ml 37 points 10 months ago

Which makes even less sense because the US would drag itself through ten miles of desert filled with rusty needles to buy that sort of tech

[-] Magos_Galactose@lemmygrad.ml 39 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

US media trying to find evident of Uyghur genocide, probably :

Who needs evidence when you can just believe a German guy who believes he is send by God to destroy China

Who needs a German guy who believes he is sent by God when you can just take one look at china under the bed

clearly China is so technologically advanced that it can hide its level of technological advancement

[-] urshanabi@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 10 months ago

Ha! That's where you're mistaken, the lack of evidence is evidence! So are out of context low-res satellite images, no, I will not elaborate further!

/s since I don't want a straggler to come by and think this was serious

[-] American_Badass@hexbear.net 57 points 10 months ago

I don't think it's beating a dead horse, tiny tank. I was just talking to someone I know about this who was on my ass when I said the whole uyghur genocide narrative was fabrication.

It's pretty obvious that had China been genociding Muslims, the US state department would have been supportive of it. I don't see how weird libs whose political identity is wanting to smugly be correct and good don't see how their opinions are always directly in line with the US state.

I do hope it's a radicalizing moment for people, and maybe it is. I don't have a good enough handle on popular sentiment for that.

I am Chinese, fluent in Mandarin too, but not Zhongguoren/中国人.

Everytime I read western media writing about Uyghur genocide, it exasperates me.

Look, I know Uyghur, or Xinjiang to be exact, are heavily scrutinized and watched, but genocide is on a whole different level. You can call current Hamas-Israel war as genocide, but Uyghur?

The last time I visited there five years ago, I walked on the street and enjoyed busy festive walk....

A community for everything related to Palestine and the occupation currently underway by the occupying force known as Israel.

Anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism. Existence is resistance for Palestinians.

Please refer to Israel as Occupied Palestine, or occupied territories. The IDF is a fascist and ethnonationalist occupying force. Israelis are settlers. We understand however that the imperial narrative (which tries to legitimise Israel) is internalised in the imperial core and slip-ups are naturally expected.

We always take the sides of Palestine and Palestinians and are unapologetic about it. Israel is an occupying power whose "defence force"'s (note the contradiction) sole purpose for existing is to push Palestinians out so they can resettle their rightful land. If you have anything positive to say about Israel we do not care.
