He didn't almost die from being shot, he almost got shot.
If he almost died from being shot, that would mean he got a severe life threatening injury from being shot, which isn't what happened.
I think you're taking this a bit too medically. A bullet missed his head by less than an inch. That's almost.
I'm not entirely convinced it didn't go right through his ear and out the other.
Almost died from being shot is still correct there. It was an inch away from killing him. He almost died from being shot. Also, he didn't almost get shot, he did get shot.
