Putler has been HUMILIATED by the Kursk offensive and this proves that Russia's army is in tatters and unable even to defend its own territory. However, it is simultaneously true that Russia poses an existential threat to countries thousands of miles away, as this recent Politico article demonstrates. Ireland - a country that immediately springs to mind as one surrounded by enemies - is being bullied due to its lack of military.

Despite bearing responsibility for 16 percent of the EU’s territorial waters, and the fact that 75 percent of transatlantic undersea cables pass through or near Irish waters, Ireland is totally defenseless. And I mean completely unable to protect critical infrastructure, or even pretend to secure its own borders. [...] Ireland’s “navy” of six patrol vessels is currently operating with one operational ship due to chronic staff shortages. [...] Ireland simply has no undersea capabilities. How could it, when it barely spends 0.2 percent of GDP on security and defense? And it has, in effect, abdicated responsibility for protecting the Europe’s northwestern borders.

For all we know, the dreaded sea-people from the Bronze Age Collapse could soon emerge from the North Atlantic.

Unfortunately, things are even worse up in the skies. Ireland has no combat jets, and it’s the only country in Europe that can’t monitor its own airspace due to the lack of primary radar systems. Instead, the country has outsourced its security to Britain in a technically secret agreement between Dublin and London, which effectively cedes control over Irish air space to the Royal Air Force. This must be the luck of the Irish — smile and get someone else to protect you for free.

While this is very silly, rearmament has long been a part of US imperial strategy on an economic level. Desai, discussing the US imperial strategy in the WW2 period:

By 1947 [...] the domestic postwar consumer boom was nearing its end. While financing exports became more urgent, the 1946 elections returned a Congress unlikely to approve further loans. Now the Truman Administration concocted the ‘red menace’ to ‘scare the hell out of the country’, enunciated the Truman Doctrine of US support for armed resistance to ‘subjugation’ which launched the cold war, and Congress granted $400 million to prevent left-wing triumphs in Greece and Turkey in 1947.

One reading of history states that the US was so intimidated by the USSR that this forced a policy of massive arms production even outside of official wartime. Why this arms production is not occurring today can be puzzling, and (very reasonably) explained by neoliberals exporting industrial production overseas. However, a different historical reading can explain both the first Cold War, and the ongoing situation in which American weaponry is being almost purposefully given in insufficient numbers to give Ukraine a chance of victory and thus only prolonging their suffering (while generating massive profit for the military-industrial complex):

In this sense the Cold War was not the cause of US imperial policy but its effect. It combined financing exports with fighting combined development by national capitalisms as well as communism. When such ‘totalitarian regimes’ threatened ‘free peoples’, ‘America’s world economic responsibilities’ included aid to countries battling them.

By selling massively expensive weapons to Europe, America could simultaneously guarantee export markets for its industries, trap Europe into reliance on American industries at the expense of their own, and divert European funds away from constructing factories which could compete with American ones. Providing a way to defend against Soviet communism (and now Russian "imperialism") is merely a happy side-effect, and so the lack of effectiveness of American weaponry is causing no great panic among the military-industrial complex, nor an urgent plan to quintuple artillery shell production or Patriot missile production - the deals for F-35s and such are still there, and they are what matter.

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Resistance to military conscription deepens in Ukraine as leaders talk of role as a mercenary power by Dmitri Kovalevich

Every day, across the country, police are reporting arson attacks against Ukrainian military vehicles. Military personnel in the rear are increasingly wary of leaving their vehicles on the streets overnight, instead parking them near police stations. But even this does not always help.

Those detained by police for these attacks have mostly been teenagers between 12 and 18 years of age, according to governor Oleh Sinegubov of Kharkiv Oblast (province), writing in early August.

As a result of such attacks increasing in number, Oleh Romanov, commander of an anti-tank unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), has declared he has given permission to shoot on sight those who set fire to military vehicles in the rear. "In coordination with higher command, using military immunity, I give verbal permission to my fighters to shoot those things on the spot. Such traitors must be eliminated on the spot, considering wartime conditions." His unit is the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, formerly a unit of the neo-Nazi 'Azov Battalion' now fully integrated as an autonomous unit of the regular army.

So the commander of what is today a regular Ukraine military unit is openly claiming that he has issued orders to shoot without trial civilian youths should they be caught in the act of damaging military equipment… or be only accused of doing so. Ukrainian authorities are not denying that many of the attacks against military equipment are carried out by teenagers, nor do they deny that orders to shoot perpetrators are being issued and are bypassing the formal, decision-making of the country's government and armed forces general staff.

...

the large Western governments continue to demand intensified conscription by the Ukraine government, which means more capture and kidnapping by military conscription officers without the slightest heed or attention to human rights. Ukrainian MP Fyodor Venislavskyy wrote on Telegram on August 6 that Ukraine's Western 'partners' are also raising periodically the proposal that Ukraine lower its official age of military service (conscription). He writes, "They believe that the age range of 18-25 is the most optimal and effective age of military service for citizens when physical and psychological qualities needed to be able to fight are at their prime."

Currently, the age of military registration in Ukraine is 18, while the youngest age for military service is 26.

...

On July 31, the Kyiv Post reported that Ukrainian forces made a strike on Russian and Syrian forces at the Kuweires Air Force base in Syria. As well, in the spring of 2024, there were published reports of Ukraine's involvement in the fighting in Sudan. As reported by the Wall St. Journal in March, Ukraine has participated in combat in Sudan because "the West has been reluctant to get directly involved".

Thus does the Kiev regime try to sell itself to the West as resembling an effective, private military company that will fight against anti-imperialist movements around the world whenever and wherever the Western governments do not dare to introduce their own troops. Rubicon Telegram channel reports on August 6, "We can only state this curious precedent in international relations when an entire state begins to position itself as a large, highly specialized, private military company (PMC)."

Simply put, Ukrainians are to become expendable human material spending their entire lives fighting wars and working to pay off international loans, all for the sake of preserving the hegemony of Western imperialism.

Democracy is when you ban all opposition parties, cancel elections indefinitely and use Nazi militants to execute children without trial

Did you say 'slave army'? porky-happy

[-] Boredom@hexbear.net 42 points 2 months ago

Gonna be honest, 26 seems stupidly old for a minimum draft age. I am surprised it isn't set at 17

[-] SeekTheDeletion@hexbear.net 56 points 2 months ago

Ukraine has a demographic crisis from the 90s, there’s a population bottleneck and a very small amount of youth there. They are purposefully using a high draft age to protect this generation from extinction because they are already endangered

Shooting the only people whose bodies have the potential to fight for at least 20 more years. What could go wrong?

[-] SeekTheDeletion@hexbear.net 31 points 2 months ago

Sounds like they will fight, but not for Ukraine

[-] Dolores@hexbear.net 29 points 2 months ago

Currently, the age of military registration in Ukraine is 18, while the youngest age for military service is 26.

this is actually very bizarre (and apparently has been lowered to 25 in april), as far as i can tell the USSR & other former republics pegged it to 18, as do constantly drafting nations like Switzerland and Austria. Ukraine abolish the draft in 2013, reinstated it in 2014, then raised the eligible age to 20-27 in 2015, Zelensky promised another repeal of conscription in February 2022 (lmao). i guess Ukrainian politicians had just been playing with it for short term political gains?

[-] SeekTheDeletion@hexbear.net 38 points 2 months ago

See my comment above. There are basically no 18 year old Ukrainians. It’s a bottleneck from the 90s collapse

[-] Dolores@hexbear.net 22 points 2 months ago

huh. that's a good case for raising the higher end for recruitment but i don't see why they'd raise the lower end too even if they're not going to get very many. do they expect them to make children or something?

[-] SeekTheDeletion@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago

They don’t want an entire generation literally driven extinct

[-] Dolores@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

it's a silly way to implement that sort of deference though, isn't it? put in the books candidates born between ~x and ~x should constitute less than 2% of a draft order (or whatever number, use your imagination). because just moving the draft age around means in 4-5 years they're gonna get called up. unless we're baking-in an expectation of total peace before then

[-] GlueBear@hexbear.net 23 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

They're calling children "traitors" and shooting them on sight.
