At what point is someone going to tell Donald that the end result of pushing and pushing on this narrative to the point of realization... Is going to result in Article 5 being activated, Europe and NATO formally going to war against the US, and the US tearing itself apart as factions decide to move to the Ammo box after the soap, ballot and jury boxes failed.

This is absolutely a red line. and it will cause a civil war. as well as the total destruction of the world order. Xi and Putin may end up getting so erect that they die of heart attacks.

Sorry for multiple posts, but my points are different.

Impose tariffs on Denmark? Do you all know what we import from Denmark? Medication and medical devices. So that would further increase the cost of healthcare in the US. He already signed an executive order to undo the $35 insulin cap for Medicaid recipients. He is actively raising healthcare prices.

Tariffs would only hurt both countries.

It all makes sense when you accept that he's been installed by our enemies to destroy the US.

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 74 points 1 week ago (10 children)

No, actually he was installed by our oligarchs to destroy the country, so they can buy it for cheap. Just like last time!

It's also an integrated EU economy, so I'd assume the entire European single market would retaliate.

But yeah, he doesn't care about or understand that. Or at least won't until there's active unrest in America over the crazy inflation and layoffs.

[–] SLVRDRGN@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

None of that is ever blamed on the Republican president in office though.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 6 days ago

To date, it hasn't been the president's fault. The shit they do makes it's way to workers and consumers well after they leave office, for the most part. This would be different, and in some cases very uneven - if there's an accross-the-board 25% tariff with Canada, the Detroit auto industry basically shuts down and lays everyone off today.

Tariffs seem to be Trump's go-to move nowadays. "Grab them by the wallet".

  • To Putin: stop the war or tariffs!
  • To Europe: buy more US oil or tariffs!
  • To Denmark: gimme Greenland or tariffs!
  • To Melania (probably): pretend you can still bear being in the same room with me or tariffs!
  • McDonald's - "cash or card, sir?" "Tariffs!"

There is no way to impose tariffs on Danish goods. We're part of the EU, and the inner market, so we'll just send the goods from some other EU country. So any tariff on Denmark would have to be a tariff on EU.

As an European it's pretty clear now that the US is our enemy. This is just the start. We really need to put our military in order and prepare for the inevitable attack.

The man is utterly deranged. During his last term, one of the few things I was grateful for was that he didn’t start a new war. Apparently, he’s planning to make up for that.

I can't wait for the US to enter the "find out" phase. It will take some time, sure, but heh, hubris always invites nemesis.

[–] Ulvain@sh.itjust.works 51 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah... Some country's "find out" phase in history occurred only after unspeakable horrors were committed and the country was crushed jnto submission by an international coalition. So... Idk

Trump ginning up beef with Greenland and Panama, for "security" and "defense" is all simply to grant geopolitical cover to Putin for Russia's invasion and ultimate annexation of Ukraine. "Watch me do the same thing as Russia for the same reasons" gives the world a second Imperialist foil, regardless of Trump's actual intent.

Summary:

In a recent 45-minute phone call, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his demand for the United States to gain control over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly responded that Greenland is not for sale. According to European officials, the conversation was aggressive, with Trump threatening punitive tariffs against Denmark if it refused to relinquish control of Greenland. Frederiksen proposed enhanced cooperation on military bases and mineral exploitation in Greenland, but Trump dismissed these offers, insisting on full U.S. control. This development has heightened concerns in Europe about strained transatlantic relations, especially following Trump’s recent threats of heavy tariffs on the EU and demands for increased defense spending from NATO allies.

Why is Denmark even offering anything at all

Why is Denmark even offering anything at all

As others have pointed out, the US play here is likely to be stopping payments for the current US military based in Greenland but not leaving, testing its limits (operating outside of the designated areas), and generally just begging for a response. At this point the Danish (and the EU generally) will have to choose - if they do nothing then it'll encourage more of this BS in Greenland and elsewhere. If they respond with any force it'll be what Trump wants. He'll use it as pretense for...whatever he wants to do.

This behaviour will make it far less likely that all of the US international partners will renew military base leases or sign new ones, and long term it will diminish American military power globally, but nobody in MAGA let alone Trump are really thinking beyond the immediate anyways.

So the answer your question, the Danes are trying to avoid all of that BS.

[–] jlh@lemmy.jlh.name 43 points 1 week ago

Denmark is normally otherwise an ally of the US.

However, this call has spooked the Danes. There will 100% be escalations from the Danes to protect themselves as a result.

I love that the map in the article only labels a few locations, but one of them is the Gulf of Mexico.

Nice subtle dig at the man-baby.

It is wild to think that EU-US relations might worsen because Trump wants to annex Greenland, jeez.

I don't know why the Danish PM would waste his time even talking to Traitorapist Trump. The whole world knows Trump is a notorious liar.

The US will be spending the next several decades building their reputation back up.

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 days ago

The US is never more than 4 years away from electing a lunatic. Soft power is not really a possibility anymore.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 92 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (10 children)

Uh… I think it’s never coming back.

We had our chance to course correct, and didn't. And I suspect dems are either going to learn nothing and flop the next election, literally get suppressed by Trump, or get their own version of a "liberal Trump."

Our social media is only going to get more toxic now, and it’s already dominating public discourse.

I dunno where you live, friend, but do not assume the US is digging its way out of this hole :(

[–] interurbain1er@sh.itjust.works 50 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Were you making the assumption that the US had a good reputation before that ?

Half of the world hated it outright and the other half was mostly just playing along because of its economic or military power and propensity to behave like a bully.

The only difference is that Trump is too stupid to do it quietly.

No way that is ever happening. We are a dying empire, rotting from the inside out. Because of a massive amount of inertia, the decline is really only starting to become obvious widely, but we are well into the phase where the ruling class has given up and is just looting the carcass before it hits the ground. They have succeeded in distracting the general public from the dire circumstances for a long time, but things are so far gone at this point, that won’t really be necessary much longer. As we proceed to give up on democracy, the efficacy of political influence withers away. The real danger for the world is that we have a massive military infrastructure ready to lash out in increasingly desperate spasms as the organism desperately tries to prolong agency. It is past time for the world community to organize against the threat the US poses to them. This is just getting started.

Even if sanity is restored next election cycle, I think at this point no one will ever trust us again knowing that in 4 years there’s a huge chance all hell will break loose again.
