Welcome

Welcome to c/vegan@lemmy.world. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • embedded images of text require alt-text
    • posts with an image of text should have a transcription in the body or alt-text
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
    • use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
  7. No brigading, either off-site or on-site. An incitement to brigade includes two elements: a call to disruptive action and a specific direction outside of this community in which to take that action. Exceptions include:
    • Calls to boycott.
    • Calls to in-person protest of a government, high-profile individual, or company/organization.
    • Votes provided they have a sufficiently broad target audience or provably effective controls against vote brigading.
    • Petitions.
  8. All Lemmy.World Terms of Service also apply.

A reminder that when something is expensive then people buy alternatives

Fox News: "Millenials are killing the fur industry!"

Disclaimer: I am not a vegan. I like animals, but I've only gotten as far as being conscious of animal products. I try to reduce my usage of them, but I'm not free of them by a long shot. Just putting this here in case someone points out the hypocrisy. They'd be right, but for what it's worth, I'm trying.

Cactus and mushroom leather are becoming visible. I recently wanted to get a new belt and new camera strap. My new belt and strap are not animal based.

If only we could say the same thing about animals slaughtered for flesh 😭

Progress often seems daunting and impossible until we make it happen

Many institutions that seemed impossible to tear down have been torn down before

It won't happen overnight, but there is always the possibility for progress when we fight for it

Thank you for this inspiring comment! I could use some more optimism in my life.

Correct me if im wrong, but doesn't the meat consumption already goes down in most western countries? In China however it is rising, since people are now more and more in a position where they can afford meat.

Anyone wants it you can come vacuum my fucking floor. You'll get several cruelty free coats worth

[–] adam@doomscroll.n8e.dev 3 points 3 days ago

As the owner of an absolute monster shedder I also volunteer my floor.

Indeed that was refreshing to read, and much needed. At the moment it feels like a tsunami of bad news and bad takes is flooding online communities, so these kinds of encouraging posts feel like a Public Service. Thanks

hell yeah

save them foxes and minks!

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 3 points 2 days ago

Are there any other species we should be worried about?

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago

I was so used to seeing bad news that i started thinking of why a decrease in pelt production would be a bad thing. Then i saw the community.

I do think the fact that being dresses in fur makes you look like a total asshole has much to do with this.

If only there was some equally obvious way to identify someone as fascist. Something like them shouting fascist ideology, hanging out with other likeminded assholes and doing a certain awkward arm gesture. Then without a doubt we could interpret them also as a total asshole just like if they would be wearing furs. Right?

Cruealla be like these furs are legaly sourced and those pups where clearly hardend criminals. I know someone who got bit by a dog once. We had to shoot it down as a response. does shooting motion while winking All that dog food they leach from us, and infrastructure like their own public toilets. its a total total fraud by woke pet lovers.

Its easier than you think, but slow transitions are good. Start with one vegan meal per week. Then one day that's 100% vegan per week. Then every other day.

Eventually you'll just do more vegan meals because its cheaper, doesn't spoil as fast, makes you feel better, etc

[–] jol@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 3 days ago

Eh, that's very cultural. In Easter Europe it's very normalized to wear fur.

One big reason for mink decline is also mink-related diseases being passed to humans, causing huge cullings...

[–] ohwhatfollyisman@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago (1 children)

huh. so global warming does have some benefits.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Its not that. Its cheaper to make vegan products.

Just look at the price of eggs. And the price of beans vs beef. Eventually veganism will become the norm because the animal industry is just so inefficient.

[–] cows_are_underrated@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Isn't the thing with the egg prices the effect of bird flu and workers getting deported?

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The price of egg substitutes (bananas, applesauce flax seed, aquafaba) have been cheaper than eggs since before bird flu

But, yes, diseases make things especially worse in ways that normally just affect animal products
