Image of destruction in Mandalay, Myanmar, from Al Jazeera.

As if the ongoing civil war wasn't enough, Myanmar has now been struck by a very powerful earthquake, resulting in 2000 deaths and thousands more injured as of the time of writing. Estimates are that the death toll could reach 10,000. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are damaged, and the hospitals are overwhelmed. The earthquake struck during Eid prayers, resulting in even higher casualties as several mosques collapsed. 20 million people already required humanitarian assistance in Myanmar, and now the situation there will be even worse. International rescue teams have rushed into the country, and aid is being raised, though with USAID experiencing the... changes that it is, the United States will be of even more limited help than usual. So far, China has sent $14 million, while USAID has supplied $2 million. In Thailand, the death toll seems considerably lower, though there has still been significant damage; a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok.

Myanmar is located very close to the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In particular, the country is divided in two by the north-south oriented Sagaing fault. This fault is typically strike-slip; that is, each side of the fault moves horizontally past each other. The earthquake's depth was 10 kilometers, which is pretty shallow, and its proximity to the surface amplified the felt force of the earthquake. Additionally, the soft soil in this region tends to further amplify seismic waves through a process called liquefaction. Combine all this with the lackluster building codes due to many years of impoverishment and civil wars, and this explains why the death toll, and the expense to the country in general to repair damage, will probably be extremely high.

https://breakingthenews.net/Article/ISM:-US-manufacturing-activity-declines-in-March/63837825

The manufacturing activity in the United States returned to contraction in March, with the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) going from February's 50.3% to 49%, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said in its report published on Tuesday.

Month-on-month, the New Orders Index fell from 48.6% to 45.2%. The Production Index decreased by 2.4 percentage points to 48.3%. The Employment Index plunged by 2.9 percentage points to 44.7%. On the other hand, the Prices Index soared by seven percentage points to 69.4%.

"Demand and production retreated and destaffing continued, as panelists’ companies responded to demand confusion. Prices growth accelerated due to tariffs, causing new order placement backlogs, supplier delivery slowdowns and manufacturing inventory growth," ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee Chair Timothy R. Fiore commented.

So much for all the bragging the American government did last month: https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/03/manufacturing-is-roaring-back-under-president-donald-j-trump/

“In one month under President Trump, the American economy is soaring back to greatness after the economic calamity left by Joe Biden. The manufacturing industry is already rebounding as there were 9,000 new auto jobs created — the most auto jobs added in 15 months! Under President Trump, the private sector is leading the way — 93% of the job gains in February were in the private sector. This is great news for American workers and families. The Trump Administration will continue to work hard to implement pro-growth policies and push Congress to enact the Trump Economic Agenda.” — Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary

Today’s jobs report shows American manufacturing is on the rebound thanks to President Donald J. Trump and his administration.

New satellite imagery of Diego Garcia has appeared online after someone with access purchased MAXAR high resolution imagery, showing 6 B-2 Spirit stealth bombers present at the air base, confirming what was already heard through open source signals intelligence, which I reported on at the time. There is the potential for more B-2s to be inside the four climate controlled hangars also visible, for a maximum of 10 aircraft, though I think such is quite unlikely given the information obtained through open source SIGINT. I think these are all the B-2s present. Please ignore the text, the person that purchases the imagery does this nonsense.

For those wondering if it's possible for Iran to attack Diego Garcia directly, the answer is technically yes, although their capabilities are quite limited in this regard. Only one Iranian ballistic missile has the range, the Kheibar/Khorramshahr-4 missile, but that range is hypothetical/theoretical and based off of the ranges of similar Soviet era and North Korean missiles. Accuracy is also likely an issue at such ranges. I did a write up on the missile back when the possibility of Operation True Promise III seemed more likely, if anyone wants more details.

The Shahed-136B is the only drone with the range, but it would take tens of hours to reach Diego Garcia, giving the US plenty of time to shoot drone swarms down.

Iran could try close the distances involved with weapons stowed on military or even commercial ships, or weapons launched from submarines, but the US almost definitely has a naval presence at the island itself, involving it's own submarines and warships that would take out any Iranian vessels.

So yes, Iran could attack Diego Garcia from their own soil in a conflict, but with limited or untested capabilities. This is why the B-2s are parked there in the first place, and not in Saudi Arabia for instance. Rumours that the B-2s are currently operating over Yemen are just that, unsubstantiated rumours from sources that are becoming increasingly unreliable (like Rybar, who falsely claimed that a Ukrainian F-16 was shot down recently).

They got like 47% tariffs plus the USA is their second biggest export market

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 45 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It's to do with the tarrifs. Quite a number of companies moved production from China to Vietnam to avoid the initial Trump tarrifs back in his first term. These tarrifs continued under Biden, so companies kept moving production. Now Vietnam got hit with some of the highest tarrifs after Trump's latest announcement.

US airstrikes on Yemen continue for the 18th night in a row, with multiple airstrikes reported in Saada, Hajjah and Hodeidah Governorates.

Statement from the Yemeni Armed Forces at 22:00 UTC, 22 minutes from now. There are rumours that the US Navy intercepted ballistic missiles launched at Israel, and that there was another attack on the US Navy warships in the region. So it's probably to do with that. Awaiting confirmation.

Statement is about targeting several US Navy warships in the Red Sea, led by the US aircraft carrier Truman, in the third engagement in the past 24 hours, using cruise missiles and drones. Awaiting official translation.

Ecuador’s Indigenous Movement Supports Presidential Candidate Luisa Gonzalez - Telesur English

Article

The votes of the Indigenous population could be decisive in tipping the balance in the runoff. On Sunday, the Citizen Revolution party and the Ecuadorian Indigenous movement will sign an agreement to formalize Indigenous organizations’ support for presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez.

The signing of this pact will take place in the Andean town of Alausi, in the province of Chimborazo, according to leaders of the Pachakutik party, the political arm of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE).

“In times of crisis, unity is our greatest strength. Faced with the rise of a violent and anti-democratic right wing, it is time to set aside differences and act together for a fairer country,” Pachakutik announced.

In mid-March, CONAIE and environmental organizations had already declared their support for Gonzalez under a series of conditions, including opposition to large-scale mining and the expansion of oil extraction in the Amazon.

“Pichincha’s Indigenous communities welcomed Luisa Gonzalez with infinite affection!” Some of these demands were also mentioned on Thursday by Gonzalez at a rally in the Andean town of Pujili, in the province of

Cotopaxi, the hometown of Indigenous leader and CONAIE president Leonidas Iza, who was the third most-voted presidential candidate in the first round, receiving more than half a million votes.

The presidential candidate of Citizen Revolution, the party led by former President Rafael Correa (2007–2017), expressed support for bilingual intercultural education in native languages and amnesty for environmental activists prosecuted for protesting against extractive industry projects.

The votes of the Indigenous population, concentrated mainly in the Andean highlands and the Amazon rainforest, could be decisive in tipping the balance in the runoff. In the first round, Noboa secured 44.17% of the votes, while Gonzalez received 44%, with a difference of fewer than 17,000 votes.

Over 13.7 million Ecuadorians are set to go to the polls on April 13 to decide whether to re-elect Noboa for a full term (2025–2029) or elect Gonzalez, a progressive lawyer who would become Ecuador’s first female president.

Corey Booker beats Strom Thurmond.

A Democratic senator has been blocking the US Senate for more than 24 hours and 30 minutes to protest against the Trump administration and Musk. He received a standing ovation from the Democratic caucus in the House. And he continues, promising to speak out as long as physically possible.

Democratic Senator Cory Booker had been speaking for more than 23 hours in the US Senate against the policies of Musk and Trump. Booker denounced threats to democracy, mentioned concerns about cuts to Social Security and read letters from constituents alarmed by the possibility of constitutional crises.

The senator has received support from fellow Democrats and members of Congress and is only on water. Even though he was exhausted, Booker remained standing - a regimental requirement - and his voice was increasingly firm. According to him, moments like these require “more creativity, persistence and democratic values”.

The longest speech in the US Senate was by a segregationist from South Carolina, Strom Thurmond, who opposed a bill that would guarantee blacks the right to vote. It lasted 24 hours and 18 minutes. The speech took place in 1957 and lasted 24 hours and 18 minutes. In the end, the bill was approved.

More airstrikes in Sana'a Governorate.

More airstrikes in Sana'a Governorate, targeting Al-Jabal Al-Aswad (Montenegro/Black Mountain in English). This site was targeted in previous airstrikes, before the B-2 deployment.

Reports of intense drone activity over Sana'a and Saada, with Yemeni residents able to video drones (likely MQ-9 Reapers) flying at low altitude earlier this evening, and hearing them now. Air defences are suppressed.

The initial strikes in Sana'a targeted the home of Sheikh Saleh Al-Suhaili (part of the Social Affairs Department) and his family.

More airstrikes in Saada, 3 strikes repeatedly targeting the Al-Ammar family.

Three airstrikes in Hajjah Governorate.

Vietnam seeks 3-month delay on tariffs for negotiations

spoilerVietnam’s trade ministry has asked the Trump administration to put on hold its planned 46% tariff on imported Vietnamese products and engage in further negotiations. The trade ministry made the request in a diplomatic note soon after President Donald Trump announced a minimum 10% import duty on all exporters to the US and additional duties on about 60 nations. Vietnam was hit with one of the largest “reciprocal” tariffs.

The ministry seeks a phone call between Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer “as soon as possible,” according to a statement on the government’s website.

There is still “room for discussion and negotiation,” according to the statement, which cited Ta Hoang Linh, head of the ministry’s foreign market development department. Vietnamese goods exported to the US mainly compete with those from other countries, not American products, Linh said.

Vietnam planned to dispatch another delegation to the US this weekend led by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc. “Vietnam regrets the United States’ decision to impose reciprocal duties on Vietnamese exports to the US,” foreign ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said in a statement responding to Bloomberg’s questions.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, who on Thursday said the tariff is “not in line with the good relationship between the two countries,” ordered a task force be set up to provide a quick response. The new tax from the US, Vietnam’s largest export market, could significantly dent the nation’s ambitious goal of boosting growth to at least 8% this year. Chinh said the growth target remains unchanged for now.

According to the most recent report of the US Trade Representative Office, the average import tax rate of Vietnam’s tariffs is 9.4%, major US products exported to Vietnam are subject to import tax rates of 15% or lower, so in fact, Vietnam’s taxable products are much lower than the calculated 90% or 46%, Vietnam’s finance ministry said on its website.

“We know that there will be continued dialog and negotiation,” Adam Sitkoff, executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi, said at an event on Thursday. If countries can “find a way to make a deal with President Trump, then I think that you’ll see changes,” he added.

Argentina’s Senate Rejects Supreme Court Nominees: A Major Blow to Javier Milei’s Government - Telesur English

Article

Argentina’s Senate rejects Javier Milei’s Supreme Court nominees in a historic 51-20 vote, escalating tensions between the president and Congress. The government calls it a ‘political attack.’

Argentina’s Senate dealt a significant setback to President Javier Milei’s administration on Thursday by rejecting the nominations of Manuel José García Mansilla and Ariel Lijo to the Supreme Court. In a decisive vote, García Mansilla’s nomination was dismissed with 20 votes in favor and 51 against, while Lijo’s received 27 votes in favor, 43 against, and one abstention.

Failed Negotiations and Political Tensions

According to Tiempo Argentino, last-minute negotiations involved multiple opposition factions, including senators and governors who appeared unlikely allies. However, these efforts collapsed amid the political tensions that have defined Milei’s presidency. The rejection came while Milei was attending the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Despite the government’s attempts to delay the session and avoid a legislative defeat, the two candidates—appointed by presidential decree—failed to secure Senate approval.

Government’s Strong Reaction

In a sharply worded statement, Milei’s administration condemned the Senate’s decision, calling it “historically unprecedented.”

“>For the first time in history, the Senate has rejected a president’s nominees purely for political reasons, not over qualifications,” the government declared. It accused the upper house of being a “refuge for the political elite” and acting against the interests of the Argentine people.

Broader Implications

The rejection marks a turning point in the strained relationship between Milei’s executive branch and the Senate, highlighting his struggles to advance his agenda amid rising polarization. The move also raises questions about the future of Argentina’s judiciary, now left with two vacant Supreme Court seats. and Milei’s ability to govern effectively without legislative support.

With this defeat, Milei faces mounting political challenges and must recalibrate his strategy to either propose new nominees who can gain Senate approval and double down on executive actions, risking further clashes with Congress.

Myanmar's military junta updates the death toll from the country's biggest earthquake in decades. There are 2,056 dead, 3,900 injured, more than 270 missing and hundreds homeless. The World Health Organization says that the country's health system has collapsed and rescue teams are struggling to operate in the devastated country, with no roads, bridges or communications.

Elderly people, monks, babies and hundreds of other patients are being treated in parking lots, under makeshift tents. The capital's main hospital has only 1,000 beds for use.

First french poll after le pen got pwned, assuming the RN goes with the bardella guy who underperformed in the EU elections. These aren't all that different from le pen's numbers, honestly starting to seem like the arrest was either a nothing burger or a "this will bite you in the ass"-burger. The RN will probably still end up in first place in a presidential election and go to the second round facing either an extreme centrist or melenchon, which will require either of those 2 groups of voters to vote for the other against the far right, and then fail to obtain a majority in a legislative election and have to rely on referendums.
