Republican Rep. Chuck Kopp of Alaska, which shares a border with the Yukon and is separated from the contiguous U.S. by Canada, says the state doesn’t support the president’s trade war and annexation bid against Canada.

He has proposed a joint resolution in the state legislature that would affirm Canada’s sovereignty and recognize the enduring, centuries-old ties between Alaska and Canada.

Let Alaska join Canada as another province. We got free healthcare and cookies!

[–] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 33 points 2 days ago

Republicans: Manifest destiny is back!

Canada: okay, Alaska is joining us

Republicans: Not like that!

Alaska is a Republican state. They would rather die than get universal healthcare just in case it helps someone poorer than them.

Says the one state with anything resembling UBI.

I dunno I'd give them a chance if they're willing✊
No real reason to gate them as far as I know.

I don’t know. I think they are pretty mad about Denali getting renamed again.

I mean, it makes geographical sense, it logically and physically should be part of Canada. Let's annex it, who's with me?

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 2 days ago

Unfortunately, it comes with a lot of people I'm not sure about, like Sarah Palin.

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

See.... that's literally what I was thinking!

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Minnosota, Washington, and California too

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If California were to join Canada, the US would be bankrupt and destitute within a week

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

I thought destitution was illegal!

No wait, that's the other thing

This isn't because they disagree with Trump. It is because they are absolutely fucked if they don't pretend to be on side with Canada because the only land option for travel comes through our country and mostly via one route through BC.

Alaska is a Republican state, and overwhelmingly voted for Trump knowing this was the plan. One doesn't get to come crying to Canada when the Polar bears start eating faces after voting in favor of Polar Bears eating faces.

The better option is get your shit together and oust the "President" you let fuck everything up before it comes to real blows because if bullets start flying all Americans become enemies including and especially the camp who for some stupid reason believe it isn't their fault this happened too.

And yet, a Republican openly opposing his supreme leader is pretty unusual these days. That's something most Democrats don't seem to be able to do currently.

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 2 days ago

Yeah, it goes to show just how desperate they must be.

Came here to say something similar because it's important to recognise that this likely is not out of the kindness of their hearts. But I don't think there's any reason to talk down potential allies either.

American here, IMHO he's telling it like it is. Electoral college votes speak louder than resolutions. If Trump gets unpopular enough, then congress can remove him from office.

Trump didn't mention annexing Canada before being elected. He does refer to himself as "fucking crazy" and says he's the same now as he was in the first grade, though... The Alaskans only voted for him expecting a general shitshow, not a specifically anti-Canadian-sovereignty shitshow! 😑

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago

Trump was running with US expansion as part of his election platform. I am not willing to forgive or ignore that level of willful ignorance, and you can go work for Trumps PR team officially if you want to keep running interference for him.

[–] easily3667@lemmus.org 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Then you too could see Russia from your house.

[–] GameGod@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago

This guy already can see Russia from his house. He runs our local Russian propaganda sub on Lemmy.ca lol

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Can't they already just peek over the top and do it

[–] easily3667@lemmus.org 1 points 2 days ago

The tall ones, sure

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 15 points 2 days ago

Good for them. Maybe they could quit supporting that party majority state wise to show canada how important it is to them.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 28 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Good Alaska 🦭

[–] Quilotoa@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

I wonder if they could refuse to put tariffs on. Not that it would make much difference. They're a small market. It would be more than just words on a paper.

[–] letsgo@lemm.ee 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well they know if the USA takes Canada that they'd be next.
