libre
Welcome to libre
A comm dedicated to the fight for free software with an anti-capitalist perspective.
The struggle for libre computing cannot be disentangled from other forms of socialist reform. One must be willing to reject proprietary software as fiercely as they would reject capitalism. Luckily, we are not alone.
Resources
- Free Software, Free Society provides an excellent primer in the origins and theory around free software and the GNU Project, the pioneers of the Free Software Movement.
- Switch to GNU/Linux! If you're still using Windows in
$CURRENT_YEAR
, flock to Linux Mint!; Apple Silicon users will want to check out Asahi Linux.
Rules
- Be on topic: Posts should be about free software and other hacktivst struggles. Topics about general tech news should be in the technology comm or programming comm. That doesn't mean all posts have to be serious though, memes are welcome!
- Avoid using misleading terms/speading misinformation: Here's a great article about what those words are. In short, try to avoid parroting common Techbro lingo and topics.
- Avoid being confrontational: People are in different stages of liberating their computing, focus on informing rather than accusing. Debatebro nonsense is not tolerated.
- All site-wide rules still apply

It's all about an aesthetic wallpaper, a window tiling manager, transparent borders, some terminal widgets, and about 10px of space between windows
Xeyes and catclock.

This is what was considered to be peak desktop customization 15 years ago. Desktop cube and wobbly windows.
COMPIZZZZ LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOO
This is what made me install ubuntu over XP when i was a kid. My windows... Wobbly...

install a tiling wm then, instead of wasting your substance on widgets :)
Yeah the question is why would you want to look at your desktop op? That's the logical conclusion of this way of thinking, but no shame if you aren't ready to leap into a tiling wm yet.
yeah! you should look at terminals!
I dig icon packs and tooling about with themes. Hidimari is a great live wallpaper program that even allows for streaming into your desktop (critical that you disable during full screen or your resources are munched). I for a bit had a hollow knight ost YouTube video that would just play in the background during idle.
!unixporn, here are the mint posts
shoutout to the time we baited the chuds by getting 'rice' (verb) banned there
sorry I couldn't be more help but I run nix+sway so idk much about desktop environments. any time I get the itch to better tune my desktop that comm's where I go for inspiration
What's the story with rice? I never knew it was ban worthy
it's slang inherited from car modding culture that's derogatory towards Asians and Japanese people in particular
I loved compiz back in my heavy linux customization days. Not sure what the current version/equivalent is, maybe wayfire idk
I tend to just customise my Linux to look like a mac. Cos as much as I hate apple i rly like the UI theme. Although plank is kinda dead now and won't survive the switch to wayland :( don't think anyone else is making app dock things anymore unless its baked into the UI itself like elementary OS
i bet you could use the windows XP default background and have an animated owl pissing and shitting in the corner
Rad
Conky would be a start
I like Rainmeter. There's still a bunch of widgets floating around on Deviantart.
Rainmeter is for windows.
Well shoot, I thought they had a linux version but guess not.
