I heard "buy a steam deck instead"

[–] Hyphlosion@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Still don’t know if I can easily play a Steam Deck in docked mode on my TV 100% of the time like I can with my Switch.

Not to excuse Nintendo, but I think people need to stop being such big consumers. Having new phones and new consoles on release is completely unnecessary; I bet most gamers have bought games that they haven't even played yet, let alone finished, and are already anxious for a system that hasn't even been released.

I think we all can be more patient and frugal, and stop following trends and releases so closely.

I'd love this comment to be a sticky post on every new thing announcement. Trouble with us humans is we like to really get into a thing that's completely out of our control, and then we get very upset when it goes in a direction we don't like. Being able to take a step back and say "ah well, guess that's not for me anymore" is much better for your own mental health than getting angry at consumerism.

FOMO is a helluva drug.

[–] MoreZombies@lemm.ee 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I appreciate this and agree 100%, but there are a LOT of factors besides just having the thing that make it harder than "just stop consuming".

If you are someone who typically only plays games with friends, it can very much be a case of "Buy or miss out". I have a group of friends who will probably buy GTA VI and play hundreds of hours of multiplayer together. I know I will not be rewarding Rockstar for their inevitably shitty choices and behaviour with this game (Fuck them for what they did with GTA VI, greedy assholes), and I know this means just...not playing with my friends. I'm okay with that as a thirty something adult, but for others they won't be able to "just not".

Then you have all the FOMO stuff - I refused to buy Diablo 4 on launch in protest of prices and Blizzard, etc. But it was VERY hard for me, being aware I was missing out on an exper

Limited time items, exclusive events, etc, can all play a factor for those who's brains are tickled in just the right way.

I wish it were simply a case of patience and frugality.

[–] Gatito@lemm.ee 6 points 1 month ago

You're right. I didn't consider that it's easier to play with other people when adopting early. I didn't consider this.

I both dislike and like how I am called out in this post.

[–] alehel@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago

Checks backlog. Yup, currently at 427 titles unplayed. Holy cow, didn't think it was that bad! And I haven't even added my free games from EGS.

[–] kratoz29@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

I don't consider myself an early adopter, heck I never am, the only time I recall is getting a New Nintendo 3DS Black Friday edition even before the BF (the thing arrived first in Mexico) just because it was a special edition and the only way to get that model here officially... And for a good price even!

The only reason I am tempted to get a Switch 2 is because it probably means it will get exploited easier/earlier than the next batches.

Just don't buy Nintendo.

[–] arudesalad@sh.itjust.works 26 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (5 children)

What's annoying about this is that (at least for me) the switch 2's price is not the problem (outside of the USA, good luck to American Nintendo fans, you'll need it), I get that it is expensive for a Nintendo console (I probably couldn't afford one) but it has hardware worth the price (from what I have seen, feel free to correct me). The problem are the overpriced games, £75 (physical)/£67 (digital) is too much even for a Nintendo game. Do Nintendo really think they can just get away with prices that inflated in a market where most families will go "but we already have Mario Kart! Why spend another £430!!"

[–] piyuv@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Also the greed. Charging for the virtual tour game (however cheap it may be), charging for performance updates to existing games (not extra content, only performance). Switch 1 games should just run better on the new console by default.

I’m not even sure hw is fairly priced. They’re able to sell the same thing in Japan for 100$ cheaper. I don’t think they’re losing money there.

Oh I can afford it. Still not buying it.

[–] Sefke@lemm.ee 18 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Company says that if you can't afford their expensive product, you should buy one of their cheaper ones. Well yeah... Did anyone expect something else here? They aren't going to give you a special deal, nor are they going to advise you to buy elsewhere. This is so pointless.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And here I just read another post here about how gaming journalists are surprised their industry is dying

[–] Yokozuna@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Don't worry. They'll have a return to form soon enough.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

"Cant afford a Switch 2? Just don't eat and save up until you can!"

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Well I'm making myself a deal, starting today, no more gas station trips for soda. If I can make it the month and start riding my bike again, I'm getting a steam deck.

And will emulate the fuck out of switch games. Kiddo already has a hacked switch.

[–] BigPotato@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah, Microsoft had a similar stance around the Xbox One timeframe! It worked out great for them.

Just don't talk about it, Nintendo, that's a better PR strategy.

[–] Hyphlosion@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

They aren’t going to give you a special deal

  1. The Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle is a good deal.
  2. If you’re working on your credit score and it’s time to open a new line of credit, get a credit card with a $200 welcome reward that gives you $200 back if you spend $500 in the first three months. Perfect for the Switch 2 with other items for launch. Just sayin’.
[–] tonytins@pawb.social 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This feels like a "you're holding it wrong" moment.

[–] deranger@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 month ago (7 children)

Big Xbox One release vibes.

No thank you. Got rid of my Switch and got a Steam deck years ago. Much better.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'm not a big Nintendo fan, because of their pricing and lawsuits, but I'm siding with them on this one.

If you can't afford a Switch 2, don't buy one.

This is coming from someone who really couldn't afford one right now. We wait until we can or the price goes down (oh wait. Nintendo doesn't do that )

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago

I think it very tone deaf with regards to how their trying to up the prices of games, which I think is BS, and increasing the price of accessories, and locking things behind subscriptions.

Very much so a Blizzard, "don't you have phones?" Type of situation.

[–] Hyphlosion@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Or, and hear me out…

If you’re working on your credit score… Go for it!

I was able to get an Xbox Series X and made on-time monthly payments for it over 2 years. It opened a new line of credit and regular automatic payments toward it did wonders for my credit score.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Right, but I would consider that being able to afford one.

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 6 points 2 months ago

THEN LET ME FAKING PLAY MARIO KART WORLD WITH MY FRIENDS ON IT

[–] TurboHarbinger@feddit.cl 6 points 1 month ago
[–] NastyNative@mander.xyz 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

When no one buys them they will lower the price.

[–] Tronn4@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Nintendo doesn't lower prices 😑

This would work, if people wouldn't buy them regardless. I have no doubt this console will be successful, but I'm not gonna kid myself and think nobody is going to buy it at that price.

Or... play free retro games on a £50 trimui (linux handheld) from aliexpress!

[–] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

HUH?! Buy a mig switch?!

[–] MECHAGODZILLA2@midwest.social 2 points 1 month ago

Just got a tool set and replacement battery ordered for mine today, way ahead of them

[–] polle@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

It would be nice when the switch 1 would grt cheaper though. Its ridiculous how expensive it still is.

[–] Puzzlehead@reddthat.com 2 points 1 month ago

But how will we play Mario Kart World? Why not release it on Switch 1? Oh that's right, they want people to buy the new gaming system. Screw others who can't afford it. It's just a couple hundred extra bucks. Just put that extra money aside for two months and you will have your Switch 2.
