RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

I like them both, but im allergic to cats so I only have a dog.

[–] Corno@lemm.ee 1 points 16 hours ago

Cats, dogs, Grumman F6F Hellcats and hotdogs. Jokes aside, I like both equally! 😃❤️

[–] theblips@lemm.ee 2 points 21 hours ago

Dogs are a hobby I would love to have but can't. I would be able to care for a cat, though, but even then I'm allergic as hell and would probably die. I'm sticking to naming the jumping spiders that briefly take residence in my living room

personally, cats. I don't mind people who like dogs more, but people who say they hate cats scare me.

WHY CHOOSE BOTH ARE BEAUTIFUL IN THEIR OWN WAY !

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 3 points 2 days ago

Excellent point!

[–] froggycar360@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

I love both, but cats are the easier pet. I love how independent they are.

[–] tenchiken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago

Chinchillas.

[–] Condiment2085@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

I mostly prefer cats because they are quiet and chill, tend to be cleaner in my experience.

I walk by the dark park in my neighborhood and daily someone's "harmless sweet dog" barks at me insanely loud every time I pass.

Nobody's cat is doing that to me 🤣

I'm aware that not all dogs are like that, when I'm in Europe for example I notice the bar for dog behavior is much higher and I am rarely barked at.

But on the other hand - most cats either mind their own business or are sweet to me. Rarely I'll have one scratch or bite me but in my opinion, I'm jumped on or barked at by dogs 10x more than I have bad experiences with cats.

Still love them both! But it just annoys me when people don't understand how annoying dogs can be.

I'm an auncle to two beautiful children. I like dogs the same way I like my niece and nephew: I want to spoil them and play with them and give them back to their families at the end of the day!

I'm definitely more of a cat person, although even my current cat is a little demanding for me. She meows and meows anytime she's not out on a leash.

[–] iii@mander.xyz 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

I'm catsitting at the moment. Yesterday evening I had the pleasure of cleaning a trail of blood, listening to the deathscream of a mouse, to then listen to the cracking of bones as the cat ate the whole carcass.

[–] Condiment2085@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

This is a feature not a glitch hahaha

[–] Archangel1313@lemm.ee 10 points 2 days ago

Did they leave the feet on your pillow? That means they love you.

[–] TwoBeeSan@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Cat = independent

Dog = co dependent

Choose your flavor

[–] thatchemguy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

My cat would do just fine in a zombie apocalypse (she probably would be the one who started it too)

[–] badbrainstorm@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

I too much prefer cats. But most cats I interact with are drawn to me, and cats I've owned act kinda like dogs. I've been called the cat whisperer many times. I like dogs too, but cats are kinda magical to me

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Cat. I never get attacked unprovoked by cat but i get sent death threat by dog merely cycling past them.

Both for me. I love my cats, but I also love the big golden labrador that my neighbour has. He's a lovely boy.

[–] Shimitar@downonthestreet.eu 9 points 2 days ago

Got both.

4 dogs 3 cats

Had to choose? Keep both

Dogs are a world ahead in terms of emotions and interactive brain. Cats are just overlords, they own the world and you exist for them.

What not to love from both?

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I’m a sucker for just about everything non-human that moves.

I will probably die trying to pet something I shouldn’t.

[–] iii@mander.xyz 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Casually petting a slime mould

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I really want to argue against that point but you may be right lmao

Wikipedia’s photo of them look like cute lil balloons but also says most are microscopic.

I would totally pet a tardigrade though if there was a way to do so.

[–] ElectroVagrant@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Tbh for all anyone knows they may be petting tardigrades regularly

[–] CelloMike@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Dogs - cats make me sneeze

[–] tauren@lemm.ee 7 points 2 days ago

I prefer cats. Dogs are too obsessive and intrusive.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

This is a tricky question for me. I have a dog but I resisted it and it was mainly my wife. On the surface dog totally. They are awesome. But that is if you disregard the cost and work involved. Dogs are like sportscars or trucks or suvs. More fun but more expensive. Cats are like a nice fuel efficient car. They get ya what you need and don't cost to much and if you find one you like its really great. If I am young and healthy and my financials are good enough and stable enough to pay some heavy bet bills if needed, then give me a big ole golden retriever all the way. Might even try a newfie. Getting older and heading to retirement and not sure if I will have enough to keep my wife and I housed. Well no pet given that last part but if the finances are not so dire then cat.

[–] Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Dogs, all day long. But have to be proper dogs, not little yappy-type dogs.

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Cats. If I wanted to clean up someone else's bodily fluids, I'd have another kid.

[–] thatchemguy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Do I not know how dogs work? I have no idea what you're talking about here lmao what bodily fluids? 💀

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

drool, poos, urine

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

dogs are proletarian
cats are bourgeoisie
i don't make the rules
but i should

[–] Pipster@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Cats every day. I love dogs but specifically I love other people's dogs that I'm not responsible for

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yep that's one of the things that puts me off they're a lot of work

[–] Pipster@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago

I love looking after my sister's dog, a big dumb lurcher, shes easy so far as dogs go, very lazy and not motivated by walks but 2 weeks was enough to verify I don't want to own one. My two feline girls suit me just right.

[–] thatchemguy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Honestly both but I'm afraid my cat might wanna kill me sometime lmfao

[–] Zoldyck@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago
[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 6 points 2 days ago

Both. My father had dogs. I had cats. I got along with both; I just think cats are better for city life.

[–] nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

dog need more space than cat

[–] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 5 points 2 days ago
[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 2 points 1 day ago

Both; they're so great.

[–] Zerlyna@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

My cat is like a dog. Follows me everywhere!

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

Cats, no matter what. Though i'm biased since dogs are viewed as dirty here, and i've never met a pet dog 🙃

[–] zout@fedia.io 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Dogs. I live by a busy road, and cats tend to die prematurely because of this.

Both. I mean I'm more of a cat person but actually I love cats and dogs equally. They both bring magic and fulfillment to your life (as do animals in general) but in different ways. If I choose one or the other, I'd choose a cat. But I can totally get why people would choose goofy, loveable, funny dogs.

I think I have an admiration for cats though. Like, to go beyond what this is asking, if I had a choice between being turned into or reincarnated as a dog or a cat, I'd choose to be a cat for sure.

[–] rotor@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

Can confirm._

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 2 days ago

I used to be fully a cat person, but through my sister being a dog person and her having had multiple dogs over the years I've come to enjoy dogs too. At least medium-to-large sized ones. I really love playing with and playwrestling with dogs in a way you can't with a cat.

I really have a hard time (near phobia) of dealing with poop though so I don't think I'd be able to handle having either personally.

[–] Berttheduck@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Both are good. Cats are definitely less effort than a dog (as someone who's never owned a cat at least) as they don't need walking or training particularly, if you don't train a dog it will be a menace, cats just do their own thing. I've got a dog and wouldn't change that for anything, the love and entertainment they give and the fact you have to go outside with them and exercise is great for your mental health. If I couldn't have a dog, due to not being able to exercise them properly cuz of work etc, I'd happily have cats.

I'd also like to recommend rats as alternatives, they are super sweet pets, very clever and social critters. The only downside is they don't live very long.

[–] Condiment2085@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

Super fair points!
