I think its easier to switch from generally that to LibreOffice, but the company driving OnlyOffice is russian so I'd prefer a community driven project like LibreOffice tbh.
I guess most people don't know that. On paper they're EU based.
ONLYOFFICE is like where you pay a subscription and some chick will show you her paperclips on a livestream.
And that money then goes to Russia, a fact which they hide.
No, thanks! I'll stick with Libre.
They don't shoot themselves in the foot like LibreOffice and ship the Ribbon theme by default.
The default LibreOffice theme sucks if you grew up with MS Office 2007+.
Also it's more easy to get support for it. For LibreOffice you either have to know a vendor offering customisation and support, or have to search for it actively on the Website and then choose one of the 3 vendors going to their Website etc...
In the meantime you've already purchased an OnlyOffice license for your company with cloud services
Just change the theme, it's not that dramatic. I used nearly all LibreOffice programs and can't complain a bit.
Most 08/15 users don't know that an alternative theme exists. They just see the crappy drop down UI and switch right back.
At least a selection prompt on the first start would be a good idea, instead of burying it in some Menus
The selection prompt exist. It's just implemented in a way that's less than ideal. On first start a popup appears informing you about the existence of other UI layouts.
There are just two problems with it:
- you can't actually set the UI in the pop-up. Instead you have to click a link in the pop-up which takes you to the corresponding settings page.
- the prompt shows up after the UI has already loaded. So it doesn't read as helpful at first glance. To most people, it seems to be an annoying pop-up that keeps you from accessing the app, that you can already clearly see in the background, instead. So they close it without reading it.
Yep, I use libre office and despise the archaic file based menus. I had no idea there was a ribbon based alternative.
Exactly as you described I probably dismissed any tedious popups that blocked me from diving straight into the program.

Is XING even available in English?
Yes but some things are in German due to the mostly German community and the German origin.
I dislike them both, I prefer shlinkedin.com. Albeit it may not be European, I like its sarcastic tonality against corpo-speak far more.
