MODERATORS

I adore Xiaomi's build quality (especially Redmi 4x's metal case and liked the haptics on 11 lite 5g), they are the only cheap devices with decent specs (good SDM CPUs, IR-reciever, now discontinued sdcard slots, bootloader unlocking (for LineageOS with decent privacy (and DivestOS when it still existed)), decent durability and modularity (I ocasionaly repair phones).

**But of course this is just too good to be true, so let's just start with the drawbacks: **

My first personal experience with Xiaomi was the mi 11 lite 5G, which I got as a Christmas gift in 2021. It was the best phone I ever had (both on paper and my subjective perception). Well, let's just say, that perception changed not much after the waranty; first I started experiencing random reboots and after a few months the serious issues started appearing (random connectivity problems). I tried to reflash it and it had no effect. Later all the issues started to rapidly escalate: WiFi now only works if the phone is in warm climate and it resets every couple of minutes (so it's practically useless - so I rob it for parts). Later I inherited my dad's Redmi 4x (don't worry, he isn't dead, just upgraded) and it's also starting to have this issue (after 8 years not 2). I have also seen this problem on many Xiaomis from my friends.

So in conclusion: Xiaomi purchases are a gamble. (at least if you keep a phone for a long time). But they are still the only decent low-midrange phone brand (I even recommended a Poco to my cousin)

Problem explanation: I think the problem is mostly caused by heat (from the SOC and/or the enviroment) which causes the connections on the CPU to deform and slowly lose conectivity, making the device's core functions slowly deteriorate and Xiaomi didn't fix this problem for years, as they probably don't care.

Solution (probably repairshop): The solution to this problem is CPU reballing (a process, where you remove the CPU from the motherboard and replace it's solder. This is not an amateur job, it requires professional tools (your grandpa's old soldering iron won't do).

And of course: I would be happy if anyone would recommend a comparable brand (with at least pricing and custom roms).

It's a given when you're buying a Redmi or Poco you're basically playing garbage in terms of build quality because their after sales service is a nightmare.

bootloader unlocking

I used to buy Xiaomi products because of the bootloader unlocking, but in practice it is a dystopian nightmare - they have built it so to unlock the bootloader you need a cryptographic signature from them, and they don't give that out all that easily.

You have to sign up for an account with them, use a Windows-only tool to request unlocking, and they have a long wait period (deliberately imposed) to unlock, which sometimes randomly restarts. The wait period is different for different models, and can be weeks.

Their support are unwilling to help unlock immediately even for replacement devices where you want to get up and going quickly - if your device breaks (they are not the most durable phones IMO, as you note) and you get a replacement, you'll have to wait the time again before you can restore a backup of a phone using a custom ROM.

It's possible they have improved, but because of their attitude around what I can do with my own hardware, I've stopped buying Xiaomi gear.

Well, the only brand, that somewhat beats them in this regard is maybe Google, other than that maybe Oneplus, but they are ~500€ and higher for decent specs.

My previous phone was a Xiaomi and I never managed to unlock it. It would fail to unlock and then there would be a random amount of time before you could try it again. After weeks of that I didn't want to have to set everything up again and just worked at removing all the telemetry and spying.

Well, unlocking is a pain. The unlocker is buggy, you never know when you get permitted to unlock it (I usually wait for ~2 weeks). After unlock, you just stop getting bullied (unlike Samsung).

I unlocked both my 11 lite and the Redmi and I had lots of issues (I tried all my family's windows laptops and it only worked on a fresh windows install in a kvm VM), but I managed it.

I think one of the ways they save money is using cheap wiring, so it gets hotter than it should. Also, no waterproofing - which is why I no longer have my Xiaomi.

My 11 lite had decent waterproofing, but no rating, the new ones have WR ratings.

Good to know. My old one was a Redmi Note 8 Pro and I miss the excellent camera (optical zoom!)

My current Xiaomi 13T would be illegal if the new proposed EU regulation goes through.
I dropped it from about about 40 cm because it fell out of my pocket while sitting in a chair. And it instantly cracked the back glass. It was 4 months old and had never been dropped before.
New EU regulation if it goes through will require the phone can endure a drop of 1½ meter on concrete.

However the HyperOS is very good IMO, Xiaomi used to be criticized a lot for their OS, and I hated MIUI, but although HyperOS looks near identical to MIUI, the feeling when using it is just so much better.
So despite the cracked back, I'm actually pretty happy with it.

Oh no, evil EU mandating that my Phone is more durable and lasts longer on average.

How can they do this1!!1!1!

Are you seriously angry about this? Grow up

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

You completely misunderstand.

I've been complaining repeatedly on this sub about how glass backs suck in so many ways, exactly because of this issue.
Compared to synthetic, glass is thicker heavier and more fragile.
There are ONLY downsides to using glas instead of synthetic.
It's moronic how people especially reviewers consider glass more "premium", and then most people have to put a sleeve on, so the "premium" feel becomes completely irrelevant, and it makes the phone unnecessarily bulky.

With this regulation I could at a minimum get it repaired on warranty, why would I be unhappy about that?

What makes you think they're complaining about the new legislation?

The post contains a criticism, then says "however" followed by a positive. You've completely misunderstood it, from what I can tell.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

You are exactly right. 👍

Of the 6 xiaomi I have bought for me & family (Note 2, the Note 5 and then Notes 7,8,9,11 IIRC) are all working perfectly well.

The 5 started to have some slight mini-usb connection problems, I cracked 2 screens by misshaps but that's it.

The Honor phones and other cheap ones have lasted approximately 1 year, the (used) samsung fold went on repairs so often it's ridiculous.

Anecdotal evidence ofc.

On a sidenote, after the Note 2 (I don't remember for that one) they were all the note pro, maybe that's why they're holding out?

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've had Poco X3 Pro motherboard eater. 2 in-warranty motherboard replacements, so 3 motherboards dead in total, each lasting on average for 9 months. Quite the lifespan.
