I've lived with a lactose-intolerant person.

That "throne" is the toilet they ruin 😭

[–] Rukmer@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

I understand this is a joke but I also want to point out that food allergies are different from food intolerances. My kid has food allergies and can't eat certain foods or he could die, my spouse has lactose intolerance and sometimes eats a bunch of ice cream and has diarrhea. Lactose intolerance isn't life threatening as long as you're not expected to survive on milk alone. She's also fructose intolerant and was just eating plain marshmallows. Then complains about her stomach. Humans are funny.

What’s a bout of explosive diarrhea between friends?

Do y'all not know about enzyme pills for lactose intolerance?

[–] Stamets@startrek.website 23 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Honestly? I can't afford to spend $30 so I spent 30 minutes on toilet.

We buy boxes of the generic tablets from Costco, they're $20 for 180 tablets, or 11Β’/ea.

Do your friends and family a favor and buy some, they have to smell you all day after dairy.

I don't have access to a Costco and I don't have family or friends. I'm also nosedeaf to myself. Doesn't make much difference.

You do know lactose blocks tryptophan absorption, thus leaving your body without serotonin precursors right?

Closer to $30 for 80 doses. And that's your name-brand stuff.

In America. I am not American. A bottle of 30 Lactaid here is around $27.

Here's the most expensive version of lactaid I could find on Amazon. $0.30 a dose

Where I live? Yeah. It's a problem

[–] Pandemanium@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Unfortunately those don't work for everyone.

Yeah I'm pretty sure my lactose intolerance is just my mild whey allergy in disguise so unfortunately that's the boat I fall in. People ask fewer questions about lactose intolerance though so that's what I'll continue to tell people.

We do, but why pay for a colonic irrigation cleaning when you get a free one after having icecream for dessert.

my dad is lactose intolerant but still has milk, the absolute madman

[–] Knusper@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I know, it can be difficult to convince the older generations of their own good, but has he tried oat milk or soy milk or whatever's available where you live? I much prefer it now...

[–] bappity@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I think so yeah, just prefers normal milk

I once heard that you could just develop shellfish allergies even if you never had them before, and now every time I eat shrimp, in my mind, it's like playing Russian roulette.

[–] frogfruit@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

You can develop allergies to anything. I developed allergies to chicken, eggs, dairy, etc as an adult.

My intolerance got so bad that the taste was not worth the excruciating pain and I had to stop. Enjoy it for all the folks that can't. For we live vicariously through you!

I went to a cheese festive last weekend. Was browsing some books in thier library retired book sale they had going on at the same time and thought I had a fart. I let er rip, wasn't a fart. Damn you lactose intolerance!

[–] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Can I just say that when I think of library sales, I think of people stealth farting all over the place? "OH GOD. Who was that? Maybe I'll be safe in Biographies.... NOPE. Let's try Adult Fiction... WTF people? Contain yourselves."

[–] FarceMultiplier@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

I use lactase enzyme pills and they work very well for me. In Canada I pay about $15 for 40. However, I did buy some in Mexico and they were super cheap...I think it was 30 for $2.70CAD.
