Yeah, now kids are locked in a Tiktok doomscroll while their parents are yelling about how they need to upgrade from vanlife to a bus

[–] ilega_dh@feddit.nl 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not relatable at all

My parents were already divorced when the Wii was released

[–] MajesticElevator@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Loser 🫵😂

Hey, you can still buy a used Wii, install WiiFlow, put a metric shitton of games in the SD card and go nuts. Did it recently (I'm nearly 40, with wife and 4yo kid), highly recommend.

You don't even have to get a divorce with it if you're not feeling it.

You don’t even have to get a divorce with it if you’re not feeling it.

Oh. Woops, uh. Brb, gotta check how to undivorce

Btw, is there anything to let you play gamecube games without the gc controller on a wii?

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Even better you can install RiConnect24 and play mario kart online.

Wait this is a common experience? Makes me grateful my parents never fight

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I can pretty much solely thank my family dysfunction for all the tech skills I have.

Just shutup in my room, headphones on, listening to radiohead, doing school work, learning how all things computer work, seeking out various knowledge sets because learning is fun!

I'm in my 30s now, and it wasn't untill a few years ago I finally realized that ... that is not a normal or average childhood.

... But its also more common than a lot of other people from functional families seem to think.

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Humans are messed up in general so it's probably common enough tbh. My childhood was a bit different though. The arguing was never mutual. It was always my dad screaming at my mom while she sits there and takes it. I remember realizing that was abnormal by watching media growing up... realizing that couples are supposed to love each other and that fights are generally a mutual experience, not just one person belittling the other.

Anyway sorry that was oversharing lol

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hey same childhood! My dad would yell at the top of his lungs at my mom and call her a stupid bitch and she would sit there and take it and then silently cry in the kitchen and then ground me when I tried to hug her 🙂

Learned the shit out of computers. They’re the only things in my life that don’t yell at me (if we ignore error messages).

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Aww I'm sorry that both of your parents were like that. Luckily my mom is a very sweet person.

And hey! I'm a fellow computer dork too! I'm nowhere near the level of knowledge of many Lemmy users, but I've always been a casual tech/gadget fan since I was a kid. But somehow I never fully built my own PC until just the other day. Was actually a pretty simple process and things today are so much better at plug and play as opposed to long ago. Hope you're still enjoying being a tech nerd haha!

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Ya building computers is trivial :) just expensive Lego really. Built my first gaming pc when I moved out and have built a couple more since then. My original gaming pc is now my home server :) lots to learn!

[–] rhelawyn@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So relatable. Aight lemme overshare a little too (TW: sadness).

My oldest memory is my dad yelling at my mom while 3yo me runs to my room crying, and looking for my teddy bear so I can get a little comfort. Fuck I’m crying again.

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I'm assuming since you're older now, you're out of that environment, yeah? It's one silver lining in things I guess. If your teddy bear were sentient I'm sure it would have hugged you back and told you everything was gonna be ok.

Honestly, for me it's a bit weird. I've actually forgotten a lot of the specifics of my childhood. I know my dad would do it, but I don't really remember any specific moments in time or what my responses were. Memory is a weird thing like that. I guess because it was so long ago or something. Dunno.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago

It's a common meme. Not necessarily a common experience.

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My parents were yelling at me instead of at each other.

[–] TimewornTraveler@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago

god dammit daggermoon

[–] Know_not_Scotty_does@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Be the change you want to see in the world, buy a wii, yell in rooms, get divorced. Think of the children

[–] naticus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I can't think of the children when I'm still trying to figure out the time travel part.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago

You already got the forward time travel right, so stick with it :D

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ahhh the Wii... I'm always reminded of a story I have about playing Wii sports. I had just gotten the Wii fairly recently and played the shit out of Wii sports, I would really get into swinging like I was actually trying to hit something. I worked at a restaurant at the time and was standing by the door to the kitchen talking to a coworker about how I couldn't believe how sore I got myself and just as my manager is walking out from the kitchen I say "even my ass is sore!" and the manager just gives me this look like "wtf!?"

Ahh the Wii. Fun times. Lol

[–] HowAbt2morrow@futurology.today 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That Wii controller had just the right shape too.

[–] applemao@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Don't you mean the mario kart adapter?

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 3 points 2 days ago

And if you hooked it up to Linux you could make it vibrate however you want.

[–] N00b22@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And then you accidentally throw your Wii remote to the TV and you break it

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

'Accidentally'

[–] tehWrapper@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Poor kids still have this..

[–] andybytes@programming.dev 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah, a lot of people just have coping mechanisms, and they're not like bad for you, necessarily. And for me, you know, I like to do certain things to distract myself, and they might be a result, or me being a product of my environment, which could also be a good or a bad thing, depending where placed, what other new environment that I'm possibly engaged in. But it's like, also, you're aware of this. It means you're self aware. Like some kind of lucid dream state, this thing called reality. Or you could just follow your ego, your false perception of self, with delusions of grandeur, and make rash decisions while you project your insecurities on others. Pretty much every fucking American president, administration, or anybody with power in government.

[–] RymrgandsDaughter@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I still remember that whistle

[–] andybytes@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's wild, you know, people's perception of things. There's always like two sides to every story.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah like the parents who were in the process of divorcing because their kid insisted on playing wii instead of mediating their fight

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago

The only time the kid did mediate the fight with "Let's get ready to rumbleeeeeeeeeeee", a lawyer burst into the house with a lawsuit.
