The claim has a non linked URL where they compare the performance of a core i3 6th gen from a decade ago (presumably with 4gb ram) with a core ultra 5 just out (presumably with quadruple the RAM)

Bro Windows 11 feels soo sluggish to use wdym Microsoft πŸ’€πŸ™
This is the specs I used to run it on(I3 12100f,GTX 1650,16GB ram)

[–] pewpew@feddit.it 0 points 23 hours ago

Oh cool so making a Linux USB will be three times as fast!

[–] Armand1@lemmy.world 96 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

That's incredibly stupid. Genuinely one of the worst comparisons by a large company in the last few years, and we just had the Nvidia fake frames scandal.

Is this claim local, or do they do this across markets?

Would be helpful to have a link.

Windows 11 PCs are up to 2.3x faster than Windows 10 PCs

Based on testing performed by Microsoft in December 2024 using Geekbench 6 Multi-core score comparing a selection of Windows 10 PCs with Intel Core 6th, 8th, and 10th generation processors and Windows 11 PCs with Intel Core 12th and 13th generation processors. Performance will vary significantly by device and with settings, usage and other factors.

I mean... okay? Pretty sure that has very little to do with the OS at that point. That's kind of like saying the PS5 is faster than the PS4 -- yeah, I'm upgrading hardware, of course it's faster. Kinda surprised they only got 2.3x with that basis of comparison.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 days ago

"this is our best product yet"
yeah i'd fucking hope so, otherwise why the fuck are you making a new version?

[–] suicidaleggroll@lemm.ee 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I believe it.

  1. Install Windows 11 on your old Windows 10 machine
  2. Discover that between the bloat, spyware, and default settings that keep resetting themselves, it's basically unusable now
  3. Wipe the drive and install Linux in its place
  4. Your system is now 3x faster than it was with Windows 10
[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Win 11 is 8gb minimum for a useable experience.

The only thing it is faster at than 10 is getting me to commit to switching to Linux.

[–] GreatRam@lemmy.world 51 points 3 days ago (4 children)

3 times faster on 4 times faster hardware

the lifespan of the computer is 3 times faster. build in 2025, get a new one in 2027

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 29 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It definitely is depending on what you’re measuring. I’ve personally seen at least three times more people pushed to Linux each month since Windows 11 was released. Probably more. Windows 11 is the fastest Windows version at creating new Linux users, easily.

Agreed, Windows 10 pushed me to dabble in Linux, Windows 11 pushed me to update my home server, lappys and gaming desktop all to Linux.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I saw a lot more "I'm converting immediately" posts after win 8 tbh, and I wasn't even on Lemmy surrounded by the most hardcore Linux devotees this side of slashdot. 2012 wasn't the year of the Linux desktop and 2025 won't be either. There won't be a year of the Linux desktop until OEMs start shipping it by default on new hardware.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Tons of OEMs are. Way more than in 2012.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

That's true but we're far from critical mass. I will say the steam deck has done more than any other single innovation in the 25 someodd years I've been paying attention to this stuff.

[–] flango 47 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"Just buy a new computer bro; hear me out, Windows 11 is what you need, j-ust j-ust justone more computer."

"Stop it Morty! Microsoft just wants to sell licenses to hardware vendors, don't you see it you, you, you stupid little btch. It's a conglomerate, Morty!"

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 16 points 2 days ago

It probably is 3x faster. At siphoning your personal data.

[–] Lanske@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

3 times as fast in the bin!

Guys, I found one other Microsoft claim that's even more hilarious:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/windows/copilotplus-claims?tabs=amd

They say that:

  1. Windows 11 PCs are faster than the MacBook air M4 (with the top of the line AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, but only with cinebench. Because a fanless laptop like the MacBook air is perfect for run cinebench the whole day, I'm sure it won't throttle)

  2. They're also faster than the MacBook air M3 (of course, if they were faster than M4...) of course still only with cinebench

  3. And they're faster than the MacBook air M2. Of course only with cinebench. I'm sure it's only a coincidence that they are choosing a heavy benchmark for a fanless laptop instead of a MBP with better airflow. What's next, comparing the result of multicore cinebench on a MacBook air wrapped in cellophane, inside a car parked in the Texan summer?

  4. And that when running cinebench multicore, it's FIVE TIMES FASTER than what you gonna get with a windows 10 PC!!! This claim was so hilarious that I had to find that test from that "reputable" third party and in the PDF they're comparing a Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 with a ThinkPad E590 Intel Core i5-8265U. Of course the Ryzen is faster in multicore benchmark, it has 20 threads vs only 8.... I don't understand why they settled on a simple Ryzen AI 9 365. Why not comparing the 8th gen i5 U series with a threadripper pro 9995x in multicore cinebench? In this way they could claim "it's HUNDRED TIMES FASTER!!!11!"

  5. And the newest copilot+ windows 11 PCs are FOUR TIMES faster in 3D gaming (the catch: only in 3d mark and only if comparing with laptops with integrated graphics)

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago
[–] GoodOleAmerika@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago

Linux mint is 3x faster than windows 11. So like 9x than windows 10. First time I moved out, been 2 months and I don't miss windows.

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 11 points 2 days ago

And even with that, steamos can be 2x faster than any windows version

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Is this the tech equivalent to "9 of 10 doctors agree..."?

I think it might be "We decided to outsource our non-English marketing team to an AI".

[–] einlander@lemmy.world 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] steal_your_face@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 days ago

Lol isn't most lying by deception?

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee 16 points 3 days ago

They're technically not wrong. It's 3x faster at stealing your data, so it's 3x as faster at something.

Three times faster at eating up all your RAM?

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

The world would be a lot better if liars suffered an unrecoverable reputational hit for lying.

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 17 points 3 days ago

The taskbar is written in javascript on windows 11.

[–] detun3d@lemm.ee 10 points 3 days ago

3 times faster to uninstall and never go back to.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've seen gamers do this exact same thing when they say NVME drives load games an order of magnitude quicker than the SATA SSDs they were using.

Never do they mention that the NVME drive was in an entirely new PC using a much better CPU...

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

SATA 600MB/S

NVME 3500MB/S

Maybe not an order of magnitude faster, but at least 5x faster...

Don't @ me about the numbers, just did a quick search for their read speeds.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Right, now load the same game onto each and measure the load times.

Depending on the game, one will be like 6 seconds and the slow drive will be like 6.2

Because most game loading is CPU bound.

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Sorry, all I got is NVME right now anyway. I'll just have to take your word for it.

[–] raltoid@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

It's misleading, but not wrong based on the hardware.

  • i3-6100U - 2015, 15W TDP base speed 2.3Ghz (has no turbo), 3MB cache

  • Ultra 5 125U - 2023, 15W base TDP, base speed 1.3Ghz, turbo 4.2Ghz(57W), 12mb cache.

Honestly I'm surprised they didn't go for the Ultra 9, with a 2.3(45W) base, 5.1 tubo(115W) and 24MB cache.

[–] Airowird@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago

The new Lada, now 3x the top speed ~(compared~ ~to~ ~a~ ~bicycle)~

[–] stinerman@midwest.social 8 points 3 days ago

I'm typing this message on this computer (upgraded as far as it'll go, running Debian Stable). No one needs any of this hardware for what most people use their computers for.

[–] pipes@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 days ago

Lol and the one with W11 it's an Intel Ultra, aka the ones made with the modern lithographies at TSMC (like the AMD Ryzens, Apple Ms, etc)

[–] 52fighters@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm going to guess 11 is slower than 10 on equal hardware.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago

Oooo yah. Need that extra power for telematics and AI bullshit

[–] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 5 points 3 days ago

It takes me three times faster to uninstall Windows 11 and install Linux.

[–] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It's still a silly comparison, but they tested 10 Windows 10 devices with 6th-11th gen processors and 10 Windows 11 devices with 12th-13th gen processors. You're supposed to compare the average of all the results, not Device #9 with Device #9.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/windows/windows11-performance-claims

[–] pipes@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago

Right, so different boards, ssd chips, ram generations, even the displays make a difference since newer panels are more efficient on average. Absolutely inexcusable.

Btw among the W10 devices they even put an Intel "Y", a cpu with 3.5-7W TDP πŸ˜‚. I have one of those and it's the worse computer I ever used, recently revived with CachyOS because thankfully it has the x86v3 instructions (=it's not too old)

[–] Moonrise2473@feddit.it 3 points 2 days ago

The difference in performance from a Intel 11th gen and Intel 12th gen, with the same amount of memory and the CPU in the same class, is not measurable in daily life. The average for w10 devices is skewed to the bottom, and it's also a comparison that doesn't make sense. Of course a computer from ten years ago is slower. I would be surprised if it wouldn't be like that.

They wanted to do a comparison like Apple "M1 is 4x faster than our previous Intel laptop" but at least apple says which exact benchmark uses and it's directly compared to the previous model on sale, not a random one from a decade ago (although Apple always chooses some useless benchmark like calculating integers or other stuff that has absolutely no impact in real life but has a higher result).

Here Microsoft says "Web browsing is up to 3.2x faster" but we all know that RAM heavily influences web browsing. How much memory the chosen sample has? They don't say it and I suspect they're comparing 4/8gb devices vs 16/32gb devices

Same for "Ms office is up to 2x times faster" but we all know that the difference is invisible in real use. Probably the w10 sample have sata HDDs (especially that i3-6100) while the w11 sample they all have nvme pcie gen 4 x4 drives so of course they load Microsoft word much faster.
