Elon Musk publicly mused about creating a new political party this week, an idea that could escalate the billionaire's feud with his onetime ally President Trump.

Musk first floated the idea on Thursday. In between jabs at Mr. Trump, the billionaire posted a poll to X asking his 220 million followers if they think it's "time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle."

A day later, Musk noted that 80% of respondents to the poll backed the idea.

Excellent idea. You do that, Elon.

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 16 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Thing is, he's absolutely right. It's way beyond past time to create a powerful political third party in the US that genuinely represents the interest of the people.

Elon Musk, however, should not be allowed anywhere within brick throwing distance of it.

Nor should most anyone else who is actually capable of funding it. Herein lies our actual problem.

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 9 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

The real problem is with the way elections work. Any third party started in this system that's successful will wind up being absorbed by or absorbing one of the other two.

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 2 points 13 hours ago

That's not actually a problem, though. It's better when both parties support your issue; then there is no viable opposition to that issue.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 12 points 15 hours ago

Split the Republican party!

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 6 points 14 hours ago

Fuck no. While I very much want more parties, a party created by and for oligarchs would suck the donkiest of elephant balls.

[–] limelight79@lemmy.world 6 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Anyone remember Ross Perot? He created the Tea Party, which eventually took over the Republican party.

[–] harmsy@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Let's hope this causes more Perot-esque vote spoilers on the right wing.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 6 points 16 hours ago

Yeah, you do that buddy, spend lots of money, too. Every single vote he draws will come from HitlerPig, not the Dems.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 50 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, please steal 5-6% of the R vote.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

It'll rope in a lot of dem centrists too.

[–] Alaik@lemmy.zip 1 points 13 hours ago

Just call them Republicans.

[–] mhague@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

"What if we made a party that represented everyone?"

Holy shit, I don't think anyone's thought of that. Jamie, check the web to see if people ever tried creating a party for the rest of us.

Chat, type 1 if you think having a party that represents 80% of America is a good idea.

[–] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

That's the joke. Every party says they represent most people, but end up in the pocket of the wealthy and corporate interests of it gets big enough

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

Do it you coward.

[–] Cris_Color@lemmy.world 76 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

"the 80% of people in the middle" that do Nazi salutes and say Germany should forget the national shame of the Holocaust, while flying to Germany to campaign for and praise the modern day Nazi party...

How very centrist 😅

[–] alaphic@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

All while being so k-holed out your pee-hole don't work no more... 😋 Aaaand attempting to lure anyone with a working uterus and a twitter account into his weird natal cult...

Clearly just very normal activities that every American engages in on a daily basis.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 2 points 17 hours ago

I like how you have to specify that it's a natal cult because he broke his dick and is effectively infertile through natural means. Also a natal cult is much more pathetic than a sex cult, at least someone is having fun in the sex cult.

[–] spamfajitas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 21 hours ago

Tbh I'm a little surprised he didn't say it was 88%

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 122 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What a loser. But please, by all means. Fracture Trump's base.

[–] joyjoy@lemmy.zip 1 points 13 hours ago

At the same time, let AOC and Sanders make a fourth party, also splintering the Democratic Party.

[–] PotatoLibre@feddit.it 22 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Until he will be persecuted and will hide in Russia, which will drive Donald to help Ukraine in the end.

I really reallu hooe I will be right.

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I don't think he's going to run to Russia. The moment he does, he all of his US companies will be seized. So if he wants to go, he's going to need to find a way to very quickly liquidate everything without the federal government noticing. But you can be sure that the spy agencies are watching him. He's already too powerful for comfort, and it's their job to spy on people like him.

[–] SpaceShort@feddit.uk 1 points 6 hours ago

What he really needs to do is kill Donald Trump and install JDVance as a puppet of the tech oligarchy.

[–] mriguy@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (6 children)

But you can be sure that the spy agencies are watching him. He's already too powerful for comfort, and it's their job to spy on people like him.

And do what? It was very clear that if Trump got elected he’d take a wrecking ball to the country that we will probably never recover from, at the behest of a hostile foreign leader he’s been openly conspiring with for decades. What exactly did they did to stop him?

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 1 points 16 hours ago

Now that he's rooted through through every government database, and stolen everything, he knows too much If he tries to run to China or Russia, his plane will probably mysteriously crash.

The Nazi party isn't new, dipshit.

So then the US will have three right wing parties. Choose your flavor:

  • Corporate Neoliberal Party
  • American Nazi Party
  • White Apartheid Apologists
[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 4 points 17 hours ago

I love how this was the thrust of the Russian meddling campaign, using #bothsides to build voter apathy.

I'm not saying you're a Russian meddler, but I know the source of that duck quacking noise I was hearing.

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 17 hours ago

Reminds me of Ye and his public stunts.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 11 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

This is awesome. Will hopefully wedge drive the Right with the biggest spoiler of all time making Jill Stein, Jojo, or Nader look like slivers by comparison.

I'm all for it because it will split Trump's vote, but there's really no point as there won't be free elections for anything more serious than dog catcher in the US until the fash have been forcibly evicted.

The democratic options expired Jan 20th 2025. Resist.

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 2 points 16 hours ago

'I'll make my own party with blackjack and hookers'

[–] IhaveCrabs111@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Remember when he was going to make a new iPhone when he was having panic attacks about apple banning twitter? This will be just like that. The guy jumps from thought to thought like the direction of the wind. He can’t follow through on anything himself, he just throws some money at it and pretends that he does the work. So many people could do so much more than him if they had his resources.

[–] voxthefox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 day ago

What i was thinking, only way he ends up doing this is if someone else does it, it's successful, and he buys the party, that's the only thing he's been good at, and basically what he tried with trump.

[–] Robbity@lemm.ee 1 points 15 hours ago

Call it American Party X and we have a deal.

[–] JaymesRS@literature.cafe 10 points 1 day ago

A Nationalist American Zenith Initiative Party. Really "Bring America back to its high point" kind of movement.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The party logo will be an ancient far eastern peace symbol.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

Except backwards.

[–] Little8Lost@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (3 children)

i hope he succeeds in creating a third party because it will break the 2 party system and opens the idea to vote for another option to americans.

And i hope the party then gets taken over by people in favor of unions and stuff

Hoping the third party fractures the right is all you can hope for while we're a first-past-the-post voting country. Any new party popular enough to displace a party will simply become the other second party and create the same mediocrity. Until then, it would just siphon votes from the closest two-party option.

The only way this gets fixed is by ranked choice or similar voting systems, that remove the tactical voting incentive.

I thought trump losing was only hope of fracturing gop. Never thought I'd see this. Season 2025 writers are giving plot twists!
