Based Netherlands.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 5 points 20 hours ago

Probably true. TEMU is personally also my most downloaded app. I've downloaded TEMU 3 time this year. Never opened it. Always uninstalled it immediately.

It installs automatically on some Samsung phones. I think it's after system updates. The Samsung store will pop up and recommend some apps. It then installs TEMU regardless of what you choose.

[–] SealofLove@leminal.space 5 points 23 hours ago

This is a Temu ad

[–] RichardDegenne@lemm.ee 2 points 20 hours ago

We're so cooked.

[–] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Is TikTok just extra popular in failing countries?

[–] epicstove@lemmy.ca 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, if everything if falling apart around you and know you can't do shit then a bit of escapism looks pretty tempting.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 points 19 hours ago

I'm reminded of something I read during the US ban, "nobody can afford bread and they're banning the circus."

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 points 19 hours ago

Damn, I didn't know the Netherlands were cool like that.

[–] Flipper@feddit.org 37 points 1 day ago

Netherlands it is then.

[–] javiwhite@feddit.uk 4 points 1 day ago

Kosovo out here just trying to avoid speed traps.

So the source page just doesn't exist. But https://mapsinterlude.wordpress.com/ does. When you visit it, this post is easily found, but do they list any of their sources? No. I checked a few sites that list top apps by country and just checked Denmark, because that's where I'm from and temu was #8.

[–] MrSoup@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I took it from instagram, it's probably not correct. If you confirm that this information is incorrect, I can delete the post so as not to spread misinformation.

[–] RedSnt@feddit.dk 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, no it's fine, I wasn't trying to dismiss the posting of this, it's just that I'm sad I couldn't find any sources. I found a bit odd that Temu was #1 where I live, and although it's up there, I'm still curious how they got their data.

[–] Kuma@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

Maybe from this site: https://www.businessofapps.com/data/most-popular-apps/

You can buy reports too.

I couldn't find one with the whole Europe (free), but Italy is still wrong in the image tho.

All places I find seem to point at this source tho https://appmagic.rocks/

Like this page that you would think had their own data: https://www.statista.com/statistics/698982/leading-android-apps-in-norway-by-downloads/

They could also just have looked up news articles for all the countries. Crunch that data haha

[–] De_Narm@lemmy.world 176 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's depressing as fuck.

[–] Cherry@piefed.social 42 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I know. Cheap crap is a stain.

[–] M137@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's not about cheap crap, it's about the predatory nature of almost all apps shown and how well-known it is that they're ethically bad.

[–] epicstove@lemmy.ca 1 points 20 hours ago

People love convenience. And most can't be assed to get everything from ethical sources.

Just try going to a grocery store and buy tropical fruit that wasn't picked by slaves or heavily exploited farmers.

Sure, it's not impossible but it's way easier and cheaper to go for the big brands.

The Netherlands continues to be my top choice for a place to live if I end up fleeing my country. If they'll have me.

[–] Aganim@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

If they'll have me.

Not with the current political climate I'm afraid. Still hoping for a shift to the left, as our right wing parties just showed they are completely incompetent. Hoping for the best, expecting the worst though.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It's expensive. Don't forget to buy the floor for your apartment.

Edit: I'm serious about the floor. Apartments don't come with flooring included.

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I live in San Francisco, I'm used to things being expensive. The floor thing is crazy though.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I'm sure a lot of us here can say that's the only one on the map we have

This can't be correct. No way people use Signal more than Whatsapp in NL. And Temu, this app Google Play tries to spam you with? Why?

[–] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 30 points 2 days ago

It is the most downloaded app in 2024

I think most Dutchies already had Whatsapp installed prior to 2024.

And Temu, this app Google Play tries to spam you with? Why?

Because Google Play spams you with it, I guess.

[–] absquatulate@lemmy.world 79 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Loving Bulgaria. Everybody's doing social networks, meanwhile they're "ooh, a puzzle game!"

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 36 points 2 days ago

Temu is more like a capitalism network than a social network, but yeah Chad Bulgaria playing tetris instead of giving into consumerism.

People really use temu? I thought it was all crap.

Edit:

[–] smeg@feddit.uk 33 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This is most downloaded not most used, so I'd reckon a lot of people heard about it, downloaded it, used it, realised it was all crap, then deleted it.

Out of everything the most depressing is Klarna. It's a buy now pay later microloans that should just be forbidden.

[–] boovard@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I don't know if it was the case in other countries but in Belgium a very popular app used to store loyalty cards was bought by Klarna. It was not really clear that you could continue to use the old app for a while and not switch to Klarna. So I know a lot of people that just installed the app just to be able to have access to their cards.

Only Netherland and Bulgaria can be proud of themselves.

[–] huppakee@lemm.ee 28 points 2 days ago

Nobody can be as proud of themselves (because of this list I mean) as Lithuania: "LT72 is a website intended to prepare Lithuanian residents for emergencies. It allows residents to learn how to be be prepared for an accident, ..."

Swedish fintech for online payments. A lot of young people go into debts with their "shop now, buy later" function
