Just saw a post about a cop getting a plea deal AFTER he was convicted of the crime. I think we're already there.

Building a dual state need not end in genocide: Vladimir Putin’s Russia and Lee Kuan Yew’s Singapore have followed the same model of the dual state that Fraenkel described, though neither has undertaken a mass-killing operation as the Nazis did.

Uhhhhhh

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mean technically more Russians have died than Ukrainians. Does it still count as mass-killing if it's your own troops dying trying to invade another country? 🤔

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 4 points 3 days ago

Yes.

Do you not count German communists and Jews as victims of Nazis?

You absolutely count your own citizens murdered by the State in war.

Those other examples didn't directly use the swastika? That's the only example I can think of

"Dual State"???

Fucking Atlantic, just say it.

Starts with an "f". Sounds like "ass-ism"

Did you--Did you even read the first paragraph?

Edit: the very first sentence?!?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (2 children)

For most people, the courts will continue to operate as usual—until they don’t.

That sentence?

On September 20, 1938, a man who had witnessed the rise of fascism packed his suitcases and fled his home in Berlin.

That sentence? Oh, interesting, 1938, hey maybe he'll tell us a story about three little rabbits or something. Possibly a cooking recipe from Uganda or maybe a legend of the Pacific Northwest? 1938 is a hell of a distance from "America is watching" which implies real-time isn't it.

No. Like 90% of people the headline is all they read. That's why I'm saying put it in the headline. Say Fascism in the headline. If you're going to ALLUDE to it, by way of referring to something ninety years ago, Hooray, but that's not enough, is it.

It's just another way the corporate media is trying to get out of the mess it created by implying, referring, and finding smooshy less-obvious ways to say what is happening. And it had to stop almost a decade ago. It's too late to fuck around with this. SAY IT. IN THE HEADLINE.

"America is watching the rise of a dual stare #fascism #genocide"

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Closer, but still not going to get legs.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Its named after the book. The book about Nazi fascism.

Sorry if that's too intellectually difficult for you to unpack.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"America is Watching the Rise of Fascism"
"Lessons from Ernst Fraenkel's The Dual State"

Would have been better.

Is all.

In the context of corporate news aiding or hindering trump, the headline is the most important part of any article for several reasons. The Atlantic is a big publication. They could have gotten some eyes on it, could have started some conversations. But, they won't because they chose not to.

You understand I'm not arguing there's no reason to call it "America is watching the rise of the dual state", right - I'm saying that by leaving out the F word they're deliberatly blunting the impact.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I respect editors who don't choose to draft titles just for more clicks.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Then you're naïve and think I'm saying something about more clicks.
