Side note: fuck the ACLU for using a deeply and fundamentally flawed argument to defend and support the Citizens United ruling. I stopped donating to them when I learned about that years ago.

What the ever loving fuck? Why do we need a lawsuit to make someone enforce the existing Wisconsin bribery statute?

Because this is america.

[–] redditigon@lemm.ee 44 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Lol, votes were sold. How is that democracy anymore?

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The candidate he was backing lost.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Trump lost...? Did I jump timelines?

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

No, you're just remembering the wrong time. This is about the supreme court election in Wisconsin.

Well, you see, money is speech now.

So I guess the question is...would this SCOTUS suppress the free speech of billionaires who want to buy votes directly?

[–] warbond@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Yep, the Citizens United decision let everyone know that some people just have more free speech than others. This is America.

Wasn't democracy the day the electoral college came into existence

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The lawsuit asks the court to order that Musk never offer similar payments to voters again.

Why stop at a specific number? The troll will just do it again using a different number.

[–] Crazyslinkz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Or just use a cyber truck.

He can't sell em, he'll just give em away for votes

🤣

[–] javiwhite@feddit.uk 7 points 2 days ago

A better tactic would be to threaten free delivery of a cyberstuck for every person that doesn't vote the way he wants.

[–] ChojinDSL@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It never was a democracy. The fact that the popular vote and the representative vote can produce different results proves this.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

No it doesn't, it just proves that you don't know what a representative democracy is. The electrical college is bullshit, but it's still somewhat democratic

[–] Hylactor@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 days ago

The electrical college is bullshit

Shocking!

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world -2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Take your "somewhat" to someone who cares. The electoral college is a piece of biased shit and it can burn in hell.

The person you're sneering at doesn't care that technically you can slap a word in front of democracy and not be lying. The people don't choose the president, a convoluted system designed to be manipulated over time does.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The point is that direct democracy is just one form of democracy and not having the people directly vote for President doesn't make us undemocratic (so much other shit does that).

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Some people have the opinion that if you put in place a system that disempowers voters in some states more than others, this should not be considered a democracy. I agree with that opinion. It can easily be argued, but it sounds like you've made your mind up.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 2 days ago

We've failed ourselves by having elected Congresspersons where things like this can even be a concern.
