A $46 million parade, the first in Washington DC in more than 30 years, unfolded against a backdrop of protests and political violence

Washington DC was locked down and the capital’s airspace closed to flights as 6,500 troops marched down Constitution Avenue and helicopters flew overhead, fulfilling a long-standing ambition of Trump to stage a military parade — the first held in the American capital in more than 30 years.

Organisers for Saturday’s parade said they were expecting “hundreds of thousands” to attend but images of empty seats in stands along the parade route suggested turnout may not have been as high as hoped. It is possible the poor weather kept many at home.

The celebrations came just hours after a Democratic politician and her husband were shot dead in their Minnesota home by a man believed to be impersonating a police officer. Threats against other politicians in Texas were made on a day of widespread unrest and protests against the Trump administration, timed to coincide with Saturday’s $46 million event.

"About time we celebrated???" Wtf

Do the military want a parade for themselves? I bet they sure as fuck don't. This was all about you and your ego, fat-stain. Get bent.

[–] leadore@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago

God, wouldn't that have been the perfect moment to turn all those tanks to point at the goldfish and minions in their glass bowl and quickly put an end to this mess? (yes I know it would start a new mess but still).

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 7 points 4 hours ago

I hope someone took a photo. $46million is a lot of our tax payer money to go to waste like that.

It's just an open air catalog for Bibi to pick from. "Donald, I want that thing, two of the 6 wheel things, gimme a couple of the pointy cylinders with fins, and keep it coming!"

Meanwhile, Zelensky is furious at getting a busy signal when he calls Donald.

Yeah I'm sure it was the weather. It feels like fascism's about to rain. Anyone's got an umbrella?

Trump is literally the dog in the burning house meme. This is fine.

[–] TheCriticalMember@aussie.zone 12 points 4 hours ago

No, trump is the fire. And everyone who normalises and excuses him are the dog.

[–] CatDogL0ver@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

46 million dollars could have saved so many jobs....

[–] merdaverse@lemmy.world 71 points 10 hours ago (5 children)

Imagine being such a hated coward that you're literally surrounded by the military, and still have to hide behind bullet proof glass

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 1 points 4 hours ago

That's what righteous men do while been righteous.

He's not going to risk one of his own taking more potshots at him again...

[–] VM_Abrantes@lemmy.world 14 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

He wasn't at risk before, staged PR stunt. Why do you think he put so many WWE employees in his cabinet?

I miss when conspiracy theories could just be fun.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Cheung_(political_advisor) I mistook UFC with WWE on this one, but the theater is very similar.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_McMahon Literally co-founded the WWE

https://19thnews.org/2025/04/trumpmania-professional-wrestling-influence-presidency/

Trump has even participated/hosted WWE events so he's very familiar with the theatrics of professional wrestling. If you were to look up the videos of other presidential assassinations/attempts, note the response of the Secret Service and compare that to the Butler stunt. Not to mention that CNN had not televised any of his other rallies up to that point, the fact that his ear is completely unscathed, or how lackadaisical they're conducting the investigation into the shooter.

That shit was staged, pure professional wrestling theatrics and the optics to gain a sympathy vote, and people ate it right up.

Here in San Diego alone, we had more than 20,000 for No Kings. Pussolini's bigly parade allegedly drew 10,000, and most of them left early looking for a Chick-fil-A.

[–] whaleiam@lemm.ee 1 points 2 hours ago

80000 big papa!

[–] Deflated0ne@lemmy.world 20 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Not tossing a couple grenades into his pope box was a failing that our military may never live down.

Zero risk. Would have become a hero.

[–] KingPorkChop@lemmy.ca 10 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

They had tanks there. I think that would have been more performative.

Wooof,.... kableeeewy,.... SPLAT

Grand applause

[–] bieren@lemmy.zip 37 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

Fake news. Ugly lies. It was the biggest and most beautiful parade ever. Everyone is saying it. No one has ever had a parade like this. They tell me Sir you parade had the most people at it in the history of parades. I have ordered the FBI and DHS to investigate and eliminate anyone that disagrees. It was a big beautiful parade.

[–] nthavoc@lemmy.today 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

"Billions and billions of people in total awe of my amazing parade, one like no one has EVER seen before because I only do the best and nobody understands the military like I do. Some say I'm be the best commander-in-chief in the HISTORY of the world! The ratings were through the roof, not like sleepy Joe's "no kings" parade who stole the 2020 election with all those billions and billions of cheating ballots and their russia russia russia conspiracy while nobody is doing anything about the immigrants eating all your cats and dogs. You know a lot of people say that my parade was the best parade out of the billions and billions of parades ever ...." - the Donvict probably.

[–] drhodl@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Too many punctuation marks, and too coherent to be authentic Diaper dribble, but I applaud your dedication!

You're an odd fellow Donald, but you steam a good ham

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 9 points 10 hours ago

Don't forget about how these fictional characters saying "sir" were big strong manly men with tears in their eyes.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

We can no longer agree on reality so MAGA maggots are probably saying this was the biggest best most successful parade ever and worth every penny….. So what if No Kings had a lot of people - Trunps gonna continue Trumping tomorrow and Americans aren’t stopping him.

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Terrible energy here.

Not the approach.

[–] wanderwisley@lemm.ee 95 points 14 hours ago (6 children)

I pray that this was his last birthday he celebrates above ground.

[–] greybeard@feddit.online 45 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (2 children)

Monkey's Paw: His next birthday is spent underground because WW3 kicked off and he is in a nuclear bunker.

[–] phx@lemmy.ca 17 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

How about we just tell him it's happened, hasten him to a bunker, and then let him take to some guy via radio that lets him think he's one of the few survivors.

Hell, that'd be a good use for AI. Let it listen to his rambling and simulate a human response so nobody else needs to bother
