Accidentally thwapped my phone. It now has a line of white pixels in the middle that came up some time after thwapping. Heard this can be cleared with a lighter flame to the bottom. Is this true?

Only because doing that will force you to buy a new phone.

I spent solid 10min writing an useful answer and then looked up. Now I want my 10mins back.

hintJust wipe the screen clear from the goo, dummy.

Obviously this won't work.

But please try it anyway and report back.

No. Completely false.

You need to put in the microwave and set the timer for at least a minute while its on to recalibrate the pixels.

[–] Lembot_0003@lemmy.zip 48 points 1 day ago

No. But it can turn the white line into a black blot.

After heating it with a lighter. 😆

No. If you're lucky, you could take the phone apart and reconnect the ribbon connector that goes from the display to the board and it will be fixed. More likely the display is damaged and would need replaced. No chance a lighter will fix it.

That sounds like the connection itself to that row somehow got fucked up. A flame probably isn't going to fix that.

You can put a flame to a screen for a few seconds and they are usually fine. But really, you should be looking into a screen repair or a new/used phone.

Just get a new screen kit online. For most phones, they're fairly reasonably priced. (But not Pixel, not even a 5 from 2020).

Try putting it in the microwave.

I heard the latest update makes it microwave-proof

[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

If you try , make sure you film it.

Where did you hear that setting your phone on fire works fix the screen? Out of curiosity.

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

probably from "a tiktok"

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Dunno, but I heard some were that you can fix your phone by microwaving it.

This recharges the bars, too!

(/s, if it was t obvious. Don’t microwave yer phone.)

[–] ch00f@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

This is the kind of equipment you need to fix your problem.

A lighter does not have the precision to do it unless you are insanely lucky.

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 6 points 1 day ago

Sounds like trial and error, and you have possibly one attempt.

[–] Jtee@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

You could try using some steel wool

[–] xor@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

no. that’s for stuck pixels… a line is a connection for a whole row of pixels, ie the problem isn’t the screen it’s the connection (or both).
but the problem probably isn’t in the visible part of the screen….
it’s also a bad idea for stuck pixels

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I doubt it. Maybe, but the chances of damaging it further are much higher.

[–] Toes@ani.social 3 points 1 day ago

I doubt it. I've seen people try to fix pressure damage with a flame with mixed results.

The frame is potentially warped if you're able to adjust it, you could luck out. But understand it's more likely to get worse.

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 day ago

Maybe the heat could temporarily do something, but other than that this just sounds stupid. Especially with strong heat source like a flame.

[–] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

If pressure from your fingers doesn't fix it, a lighter won't either. You'll need a heat gun to remove the screen to fix it anyways, so you'll find out what heat does to the edges (where these faults occur) regardless.
