FTFH: Orbán: “Ukraine is not NATO member and I ~~intend~~ was commanded by Putin to keep it that way”

[–] Hikermick@lemmy.world 1 points 18 minutes ago

Quote: "NATO has no business in Ukraine. Ukraine, just like Russia, isn't a NATO member, and my job is to make sure it stays that way."

He said it was "his job" but never mentioned who he works for

[–] Allemaniac@lemmy.world 18 points 12 hours ago

good thing our glorious german arms manufacturer Rheinmetall (creators of the Leopard tanks) built the world's most high-tech tank factory in fucking Hungary of all places. Putin will soon sport some sleak looking new MBT's in Ukraine thanks to us greedy Germans :)

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 34 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

I'll celebrate the day when the people of Hungary do the right thing.

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Around May next year. Might not be the right thing we're both thinking of, but at least there will be elections in 2026.

[–] Bravo@eviltoast.org 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

What makes you think they will?

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl -1 points 10 hours ago

I am sure many of them want to.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 121 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

I'd trade Ukraine getting NATO membership if it means Hungary loses it.

[–] msprout@lemmy.world 27 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Can't we just combine Austria and Hungary again? Everybody loved that.

Well, except Bosnian Serbs I guess.

[–] Vikthor@lemmy.world 12 points 17 hours ago

Austria isn't as blatant as Hungary but their policy is also pretty russia-friendly.

And there is a reason A-H collapsed and it wasn't just because of WW1 and Bosnian Serbs. Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Romanians or basically anybody who wasn't German or Hungarian hated the monarchy in the end(With the possible exception of the Croats, who reached some kind of agreement with Hungarians right before the collapse).

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, at least we know that Ukrainians aren't fifth columnists.

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 3 points 12 hours ago

Yeah, with their filthy newspapers.

[–] Green_Mouse@piefed.social 32 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Damn, I hate this man so much.

"There’s nobody that’s better, smarter or a better leader than Viktor Orbán. He’s fantastic. He's a noncontroversial figure because he said, ‘This is the way it’s going to be,’ and that’s the end of it, right? He’s the boss and … he’s a great leader, fantastic leader. In Europe and around the world, they respect him."

Donald Trump, predictably

Evict Hungary from the EU and NATO

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago

I don't think there's any need to evict it to pressure it to vote the right way.

So Hungary blocking things is a collective performance.

Or maybe not, then the leverage they gain from veto is more than the pressure put at them. In such case that leverage is apparently damn big and they are a small country.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 10 points 18 hours ago (1 children)
[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 8 points 17 hours ago (5 children)

This just hands over an EU country to the Russian and Chinese influences, which is why Hungary is where it's at in the first place.

This is the kind of thing that needs covert counter-ops: undermine and question orban at every online forum, constantly make Putin look bad, push against every single government policy, etc.

So basically what they're doing to every other western nation.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 17 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

This just hands over an EU country to the Russian ~~and Chinese~~ influences

Far too late for that. Orban is a Russian shill and should be treated accordingly.

Few years outside of the EU, with closed borders and no new funds may cause Hungarians to proudly follow Romanian way with Orban ending like Caucescu.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Why are you crossing out China?

Did you miss the massive investments China is doing there, to buy influence?

Here's one: https://www.businessinsider.com/satellite-photos-show-byds-massive-hungary-factory-taking-shape-2025-4

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Why are you crossing out China?

Because Orban is Putin's puppet, irrespectively of any Chinese investment.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

He who sucketh a dick can accommodate a second one.

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 2 points 12 hours ago

Lose one, gain multiple.

It isn't as big an issue as you make it out to be.

I think if it comes to that, the Hungarian people will be VERY pissed off.

[–] makyo@lemmy.world 13 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly they should already be VERY pissed off

[–] Bravo@eviltoast.org 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Orbán does just enough for farmers to keep them voting for him. Keeping Ukraine out of the EU is part of that - if Ukraine were a member, Hungarian wheat prices would plummet.

[–] Green_Mouse@piefed.social 3 points 12 hours ago

It's so selfish and low...

[–] XenGi@feddit.org 13 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Should have voted differently then.

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

That's their problem.

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 9 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Hungary should follow Slovakia’s proposal and leave NATO.

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

If the next year's elections fail and Orbán stays in power then we can start calling it Western Belarus from then on.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 32 points 20 hours ago

Won’t someone rid us of this turbulent shitstain?

[–] meeeeetch@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Do we need to do Trianon again?

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Do a Quaternon. No part of Hungary stays independent.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 14 points 20 hours ago

Of course he will keep it that way. He won't have the time to continue sucking off Putin if he has to think about NATO membership. Hungary needs to flush that miserable turd down the political toilet once and for all.

[–] Gudl@feddit.org 7 points 17 hours ago

I hate this ugly fuck

[–] msprout@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Homie looks like the heel of a foot. Putin sure knows how to pick the pretty ones.

We'll just have to see what Magyar thinks about it then.

[–] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 18 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (3 children)

While he's not as extreme as Órban, Magyar is also against helping Ukraine defend itself, and he's being at least ambivalent about letting join the EU and NATO after the war.

We might have a Hungary problem, not a Fidesz problem.

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 1 points 14 hours ago

When faced with the choice of good relations with the EU (including funding and cooperation) and standing with Putin, Magyar may, unlike Orban, make the pragmatic choice.
