At this point I'm convinced that the Fediverse integration is just a means of marketing for them. Everyone should boycott the cockteasing bastards.

[–] limer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I’m not sure of what I’m talking about exactly, but I vaguely suspect that integrating with the fediverse will make some of their less ethical practices at tumbler too transparent and obvious.

But that is one part hunch and one part cynical belief, I don’t know of the details

It's your personal lifetime of experience saying "if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck..."

Tumblr is a for profit company like many of their peers in the social media industry. They will latch onto anything of perceived value and suck it dry for their own gain then toss it aside when no longer useful to their profit margins

I am more surprised than I should be at how quickly the Fedi pitch went from "we want a future where everything is interoperable everywhere" to "we don't want any interaction with for profit companies".

I don't mind either way, it's all bad and I shouldn't be here in the first place, but... you know, it's weird seeing social patterns develop in real time.

Fedi is not homogeneus. Each server interacts with who it wants. You could say multiple fedis exist at the same time, and both pitches represent different people.

Yeah, well, don't tell them. The fields of Mastodon are still full of the debris of the Great Threads Arguments. Seemed to me everybody thought they had the correct and only Fedi.

Yeah their plans have been on and off for years now. Just ignore anything they say.

"I still want to do it, but I was just informed there's....PORN ON THERE GASP !" ~Tumblr CEO, probably

They did want it to be the new PDF.

Alternative title: Tumblr tumbles

[–] gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Fuck Tumblr. Fuck WordPress. Fuck Automattic. And fuck Matt.

Tumblr has some interesting content from users, but the platform is awful and it's even worse since Automattic bought it. Also, the trend to put the entire contents of the post in hashtags is flat-out stupid and infuriating.

Automatic is a tremendously terrible company, and Matt is an egotistical pile of garbage.

Might be a sign fediverse isn't gaining momentum.

[–] jlow@discuss.tchncs.de 28 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Or might be a sign that capitalists wanna keep on siloing their networks once the hype has cooled down.

[–] NickwithaC@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Or that Tumblr is Tumblr....

[–] Walk_blesseD@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Might be because they're down to 25 staff members

[–] The_Decryptor@aussie.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago

Or Automattic doesn't have enough employees left to implement it

[–] matcha_addict@lemy.lol 4 points 2 weeks ago

It's just less hyped now compared to days of reddit API change and Twitter going to Elon Musk.

[–] kyonshi@piefed.social 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No shit. AFAIK Tumblr us circling the drain as it is and barely able to keep the lights on

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

What's the point of being "advertiser friendly" of everyone leaves because of it.

[–] JayGray91@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

It makes shareholders feel a simulacra of emotion for a brief moment.

[–] ClydapusGotwald@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Without porn tumblr is shit

Damn, where am I going to find unhinged opinions in wafer-thin niches within wafer-thin niches. Fursuit tax advocacy needs broader awareness

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If this happens, does this mean I have to see tumblr posts on Lemmy?

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 6 points 2 weeks ago

If you subscribe to someone on tumblr then yes. Otherwise i dont think so.

i remember when they announced that tumblr would be migrating to wordpress for the backend, and both tumblr and wordpress engineers said in unison "this is a terrible idea"
