The number of young children sickened after getting their little hands on nicotine products like pouches and vape e-liquids has skyrocketed in recent years.

From 2010 through 2023, U.S. poison centers reported 134,663 cases of nicotine poisonings among kids under age 6, according to a study published Monday in Pediatrics, a journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Nearly all occurred at home.

The cases included exposures to nicotine pouches, chewing tobacco, regular cigarettes, vapes and nicotine replacement products like gum and lozenges.

How are regular cigarette doing this? You’d probably have to eat them by the pack, which I assume most kids would find disgusting.

I can understand liquids and vapes, those tings can absorb through the skin just by handling them.

Turns out you're not supposed to let kids have those, who knew.

First, you make it trivial to consume an arbitrary amount of poison(and make it tastily fragrant too!), and then you're all curious why kids are dying because of overdosing.

Mostly it'll be because parents aren't putting stuff out of the reach of children.

How many cases of overdose child deaths do we have with benzin? Zero +- epsilon? Why? Nobody is "putting it out of the reach of children". I know why: it doesn't smell tasty and concentration is low enough to cause vomiting before the lethal dose. You know, like cigarettes. A rare kid would force itself to smoke more than a few. And it won't kill it anyway.

Benzin - like petrol? Yes, I don't know anyone who leaves petrol lying around for kids to play with. I keep any spare petrol I have outside the home in a garage out of reach of my children because that's sensible. I do the same with medication and unsafe cleaning products. This is parenting 101.

That's nonsense, at least here in the UK we have:

  1. Child locks on all bottles
  2. Volume limits on liquid bottles - nothing above 10ml can have any nicotine at all.
  3. Volume limits on internal tanks/pods to 2ml
  4. Age restriction for purchasing even nicotine-free versions of vapes and/or liquids
  5. highly regulated contents of the vapes themselves
  6. timeouts on the vape "firing" to avoid fires and accidental burns

All of that has made vaping a massive hassle (have to manually buy nic shots and vape liq separately), more expensive (often two bottles cost more), and more environmentally costly (because the sheer amounts of fuss allowed the disposable and proprietary pod systems like Juul to gain a foothold before expanding to mass appeal.)

All of this has negatively impacted me and mine, and for no real benefit.

And in some totalitarian shitholes they even have limitations on flavours sold too, as if fucking adults can't have anything except drinking themselves to death with the poison to end all poisons - alcohol so they stay compliant, angry and irrational.

I can't even buy a fucking energy drink without showing my fucking ID and I can't get anything with sugar because fat fucks can't fucking control themselves.

This if anything to me is proof that basically many parents and largely people are often fucking rworded beyond what can be foreseen and will find a way to kill themselves and their child with a spork if no other option avails itself.

All of this is so fucking stupid.

You're immediately blaming vapes because you've been manipulated by corpo overlords of old money against the Shanghai slop presses owned by corporate overlords of new money, they are funding endless research into vapes that time and time again can't find a single fault with them and everytime someone dies from vaping black market cannabis with god knows what or spice or vaping into a collapsing lung, the tabloids owned by the same old money fucks or their friends spin it into a culture war narrative and manufacture consent for further restriction of liberties in a way that drives people back to the days of cancer and holes in their throat and mafia economics of the tobacco tycoons.

I think Nicotine is a good thing. I actively like it and choose to take it. It helps me. I enjoy it. I've never suffered from peer pressure and chose to try it of my own accord. I do not suffer any health issues from it and it has helped me with my ADHD since my teens in ways that rival the actual medication for ADHD. It keeps my mind sharp and my emotions under control, without it - I don't know where I'd be.

I think if you choose to become a parent, you should take every precaution to ensure your child stays away from substances that could present a potential danger, including in some circumstances - discontinuing your use and/or possession of those substances.

I do not think this is a matter of the state, nor sufficient reason to curtail any other taxpaying adult's choices - my taxes fund daycare, natal care, etc. because I do not hate those who make the choice to be parents - even shitty ones and I think it's a good thing we have those societal facilities even if I do not benefit from them personally and never will.

And I don't think that falling for this clearly orchestrated moral panic is a good use of your, or anyone else's time, either.

So you claim that it is a lie? If not, then how do those poisonings happen? And how does it contradict with my claim that "make it trivial to consume an arbitrary amount of poison"?

OP's blaming irresponsible parents. I agree.
