Place I used to live in had the best Mexican food, they had to shut down for a few months every time immigration came through. And then free food for flashing your tits in the drive thru.

I live in the northeast and was blown away the first time I had a burrito from a truck in the southwest. My immigration plan is to have a Mexican food truck on every corner of America. I don't care how it happens. I'll have ICE agents reverse deport people. Friggin kidnap them from Mexico and give them a truck and a parking lot or sidewalk. Everyone in America must experience what I have experienced.

/s, though I do take this position facetiously in immigration arguments.

Food Trucks are the best way to get great & affordable food in the US.

I, personally.. always head to the area with the most food trucks when I go to a big city. It's where things be happenin', baby!!!

...as far as small to middle sized Midwestern towns, they are often the best places to find food for hundreds of miles. It's all "word of mouth" too. So if it's good, you'll make bank. If it's bad, goodbye. No 'Yelp' necessary.

You learn to trust the food trucks when you travel.

I feel that. Best burger I ever had was in the middle of nowhere and the nearest "city" had precisely two main roads and that's it.

Someone needs to come up with a fun term for "food gypsies' before it gets deemed as "unchristian behavior to buy food from a moving location"

Bowling for Soup was a local band that made it big.

They have a song, "Ohio (Come back to Texas)" with a line that says "the Mexican food sucks north of here anyways."

I have recently moved from Texas a little north and east, but still firmly in the south.... man, I can get catfish on the corner, but I can't find a decent taco to save my life. My wife is craving some GOOD Mexican food, and I keep telling her, she's unlikely to find it here unless she learns Espanol.

It's easy, # (meat) tacos. (No?) Sevolla? (No?) Cilantro? Agua Fresca? Rojo o verde? Rojo y verde. $. Gracias.

And the meats are basically

Pollo - chicken

Carne asada - beef

Chorizo - sausage

Barbecoa (I probably spelled that wrong) - pork

Al pastor - pork but with pineapple

Lengua - cow tongue

Cabeza - cow head (brains? Face? Unsure).

Hardest part is the numbers.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Nah you're right. I get that you're speaking hyperbolically but goddamn that shit is good, everyone should experience it.

But also Mr. Northeast, not everyone has good Italian, Chinese, or Delis, so count your blessings. I'd murder for a proper chicken parm calzone. Our General Tso's is just saucy, no caramelization. Try and find a good sandwich, best we can do is Jimmy Johns or Jersey Mikes, you want bread with the cornstarch on the bottom? Get fucked.

Everywhere has it's strengths and weaknesses.

Tom Russell wrote a song about this. It's good.

https://youtu.be/WZ3Q4W9Y6kM

I've got 800 miles of open border

Right outside my door

There's minute men in little pick up trucks

Who've declared their own damn war

Now the government wants to build

A barrier like old Berlin 8 feet tall

But if uncle Sam sends the illegals home

Who's gonna build the wall?

(Chorus)

Who's gonna build your wall boys?

Who's gonna mow your lawn?

Who's gonna cook your Mexican food

When your Mexican maid is gone?

Who's gonna wax the floors tonight

Down at the local mall?

Who's gonna wash your baby's face?

Who's gonna build your wall?

(end chorus)

Now I ain't got no politics

So don't lay that rap on me

Left wing, right wing, up wing, down wing

I see strip malls from sea to shining sea

It's the fat cat white developer

Who's created this whole damn squall

It's a pyramid scheme of dirty jobs

And who's gonna build your wall?

(chorus)

We've got fundamentalist Muslims

We've got fundamentalist Jews

We've got fundamentalist Christians

They'll blow the whole thing up for you

But as I travel around this big old world

There's one thing that I most fear

It's a white man in a golf shirt

With a cell phone in his ear

(Chorus)

Not just Mexican food...

You go to the back of any local restaurant, regardless of cuisine, and chances are, there is a Mexican cooking the food.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not necessarily Mexican, but Latin American for sure.

[–] sartalon@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Solid correction, thank you.

As well as working the fields, in the US, producing US food.

I think its something like 70% of farm laborers in the US have now just quit, vanished.

So we're gonna have a famine now, or just replace migrant laborers with imprisoned slave labor, because US farms absolutely cannot afford to operate by paying a wage that would convince nearly any actual 'legal citizen' American to do the work.

('legal citizen' in quotes because apparently citizenship can now just be revoked for... any arbitrary reason)

Shit's extremely difficult, complicated, and dangerous.

Its a fucking crime we call that 'unskilled labor', fucking no way, picking and harvesting as fast as US farms demand is absolutely a complex and difficult skill, the kind of thing that people can and do have competitions of.

I see on other social media complaining of Indian immigrants doing Deliveroo or Uber. Who's going to be doing those then? It is the same result that happened with Brexit. Eastern Europeans left UK, and there is shortage of construction workers and truck drivers.

[–] BoredGamer@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Yeah I really could've picked any food but Mexican is so iconic & universally liked. But when indian places start shutting down pretty sure my SO will riot.

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I know it's fairly pervasive everywhere, but I'm in Houston. Most of the restaurants here would have to go out of business.

[–] sartalon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Shout-out to a fellow Houstonian!

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is where gentrification and appropriation come in. A burrito has already been branded a "wrap". A taco is one racist ruling away from being a hotdog.

[–] SereneSadie@lemmy.myserv.one 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hotdog Trump doesn't have the same ring to it.

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I've always been a fan of Trump con Pollo

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The clowns pushing for this have already appropriated the most bland, lobotomized, passified, pasteurized, inoffensive versions of "Mexican" food imaginable. They won't even miss the real deal. It's like when people call American-style pizza "Italian food", while no Italian alive would ever lay claim to that dish.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Tbf, (unpopular opinions follow), american pizza is better than italian pizza (I also wouldn't call it italian food though) but real mexican food is leagues above texmex.

[–] BoredGamer@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

All too true, they consider Chili's Mexican food when the hottest thing on the menu is made from Jalapenos.

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Was there any reason given? I mean, I know I didn't get one when it happened, lol.

[–] BoredGamer@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oh I was talking about reddit... apparently this is too political. Surprising amount of MAGAs there.

[–] bobs_monkey@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

More that spez is a greedy little pig boy and sucking of the orange oval office, so the admins seem to be purging any posts that might piss off the powers that be.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

The maggots were always there. They just used to be kept under their rocks by the ratio of upstanding people.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

People are still on Reddit?

[–] joyjoy@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What if we turn it into American food?

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Cuisinal appropriation?

You definitely offended somebody's sensibility. That's a paddlin'.
