This is a distraction from the Epstein files.

[–] burgerpocalyse@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Will this distract my base from Epstein?

[–] xyzzy@lemmy.today 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They should offer to rename themselves the Washington Epstein Files

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Honestly, that’s a fucking brilliant idea. That’ll make him avoid that shit like the plague.

Have John Oliver make a giant dancing folder mascot name The Wonderful Secret.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Expect more Jazz Hands like that every day for as long as the Epstein scandal is of interest.

People, we can not waste time focusing on the fact that President of the United States, Donald Trump, was best friends with the world's most notorious pedophile, Jeffery Epstiens, for 15 plus year and is currently trying to cover up the fact that he was most sertently a client if one looks at even the most broad meaning of "wonderful secrets".

We must focus on the more important things like... checks notes

Bringing back real sugar in Coke

The auto pen "scandal"

Hillary Clinton's Emails despite Trum admins actually sharing OPSEC details with a reporter

You know the important stuff of the things that really matter to the people

[–] bajabound@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Is this the new copypasta? No more Hector, LA speed check, or Mankind?

I never stopped calling it the gulf of mexico

Edit: typo

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

yeah.

If I hear some one use the other term, my plan is to confront them about using "pedo" language. If they insist, I'll shift to questioning their support for a pedo.

There is a cognitive dissonance that's been set up where their love and obedience to Trump is tied in with an alleged "hate" of 'pedos'. I mean it's obviously bullshit but you can skewer someone who can't disambiguate the two using this approach and create a situation in their mind they can't handle.

Oh, I like this. A lot.

I will second this motion of changing the name from Washington Commanders to Washington Epsteins.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 62 points 2 days ago (11 children)

Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen.

Seems to me they're more into Cricket, but what do I know?

... oh, he means the other Indians. Huh.

[–] RegularJoe@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The other Indians are also probably more interested in Cricket than this.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

We play stickball. It’s what lacrosse is based on.

[–] satanmat@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

🤣🤣

Indians are far more concerned with the speed of the pitch; and spin v pace...

Let's be realistic. This is literally just another distraction to get people to pay attention to anything but the Epstein files.

But the name change controversy is not black-and-white. There are native americans, including members of the family of the man who inspired the Redskins' logo, who want the logo back and do not consider the name offensive. There are large groups of Native Americans that fall on both sides of the issue, each with valid points.

And there's also the fact that the name "Commanders" just sucks. I don't care what the context is. It just sounds awful. First, it's a name that can be shortened to "Commies", the team color is dark red, and their home is Washington, DC. Who the fuck thought this was a good idea in the first place? I'd rather them take back the name of the old DC baseball team (The Senators) before "Commanders".

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That article doesn't say what you think it says. The family of the man pictured in the logo wanted to keep it because it was it of the most widely seen images of a Native American. The family themselves don't seem to care about the name much. Other groups do though.

I was never a big fan about the wholesale elimination of native-inspired team names, because I always felt the iconography was more offensive. There could have been tasteful ways for Cleveland to keep the "Indians" name, but it was clear years ago that Chief Wahoo had to go. Same for Chief Nokahoma (who I think the Braves retired in rhe 80s), and every team with a Tomohawk in their logo.

The Redskins were always a different case. The logo wasn't quite so offensive, but try naming a team the Spics, Honkeys, or Japs and see how people like that. The name had to go. They could have named the team after the Blackfeet tribe, somehow, and kept the logo. But once they abandoned native names, the logo had to go.

It's too bad the Washington Generals was already taken, that would have been awesome. In retrospect, they should have kept Washington Football Team....

[–] Nightwingdragon@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Right. You're illustrating my other point for me. The issue isn't black-and-white, and there are those with valid points on both sides of the issue. Yours is a good illustration of the other side.

My opinion? I'm a white guy. My opinion should be irrelevant. Hold a vote on native american tribal lands. Let the majority speak.

(EDIT: Side note, the New York Giants was the name of both a professional baseball and football team for around 30 years or so. Outside of potential trademark issues, having teams from two different sports sharing the same name isn't without precedent.)

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, you can hem and haw about the other team names. But "Redskins" was always offensive, unless you were taking about potatoes.

I preferred when they were called Washington Football Team

[–] Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip 37 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lets go, return it back to the Washington Football Team

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

I frfr loved this name and logo and everything.

[–] nthavoc@lemmy.today 14 points 1 day ago

There goes Orange Chicken Little again, trying to pop ninja smoke in light of the Epstein files. God dammit who fucking cares about a football team's name. You can name them the Washington Red Nutsacks and it still wouldn't affect their performance. Quit fucking getting distracted!

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 21 points 2 days ago

Child rapist grasps for distraction from his role in a sex trafficking ring.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 1 day ago

The degree of overreach is astounding.

[–] kinsnik@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

i'll have to agree they need to return to their old name. Washington Football Team was great, they should return to that

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

🤦

Every day that you think you couldn't be more embarrassed is a lie.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

We could split the difference. What’s the middle ground between the US military and native Americans? You guessed it! Your newly renamed Washington Genocide!

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Everyone would actually remember they are from D.C. and not the state of Washington if you called them that.

Edit for fun fact: Washington D.C. is more than 300km closer to the equator, than it is to the capital of Washington.

It’s time for the GOP to change its name to the Nazi Party out of respect for their historical fascist predecessors

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Ok, but we’re changing the logo…

Why didn’t he command them to rename themselves to “Donald trump definitely didn’t rape kids?”

He probably wants to force them to sell the team back to Dan Snyder, too. Trump and Snyder do seem to be men cut from the same cloth.
