I hate that so much. I want less time for work and more time for life.

Imagine having to spend your free time during the heat, so that you can work when it's cold. You are losing your free time twice! You can't even spend it. If it's too hot for work, it's too hot for free time.

Most outside jobs in the US already do this. Road, bridge, and infrastructure repair/building all happens between 8pm and 6am.

It's already the case in France for some outside jobs. It starts early in the morning, something like 4 or 5, and end at 11 or 12. This way they avoid the hottest hours of the day.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's coming. As I now understand daylight savings time, most countries have kept it for a similar reason: it's cheaper to operate businesses when most work happens in daylight. How expensive it is for us workers to light and heat our homes in the twilight and darkness, not to mention the negative health effects of not getting enough sunlight and the twice yearly induced jetlag, is an "externality" which isn't considered relevant.

You're probably quite right, at some point the cost balance will tip towards night being the cheaper time to operate a business.

I've already been thinking about how humans are naturally going to adapt to be nocturnal due to the extreme day temperatures. I think it's inevitable if we can't get climate change under control. It might take a while, maybe a few generations, but imo it's coming. There would also be a big push to take vitamin supplements like they do in places near the poles that don't get sunlight certain times of the year. Those that can't afford them would just be depressed and even more miserable.

For different jobs it may be possible, mine wouldn’t work that way unfortunately, retail relies on the time that customers have available more than anything else

As a factory worker I've found most places offer bonus pay for 2nd shift because it's so hot.

They could save a lot of money if they switched to two 10-hour shifts (which is something I've also seen) so the plant shuts down 12-4pm when it's hottest.

I think I heard this already happens in Arizona.
