On this day in 1884, the "Berlin Conference" began when delegations from nearly every Western European country and the U.S. met in Germany to develop a set of protocols for the seizure and control of African resources.

The conference, which had no African representatives, was the first international conference ever on the subject of Africa, and dealt almost soley with the matter of its exploitation.

At the time, approximately 80% of African land and resources were under domestic control; the influence of Europeans was most strongly exerted on the coast. Following it, colonial powers began seizing resources further inland.

As a result of the conference, which continued into 1885, a "General Act" was signed and ratified by all but one of the 14 nations at the table, the U.S. being the sole exception. The Act's main features were the establishment of a regime of free trade stretching across the middle of Africa, the development of which became the rationale for the recognition of the short-lived "Congo Free State", the abolition of the overland slave trade, and the principle of "effective occupation".

The Conference's rapacious intentions for Africa were noted by outsiders: socialist journalist Daniel De Leon described the conference as "an event unique in the history of political science...Diplomatic in form, it was economic in fact."

Before the Conference ended, the Lagos Observer declared that "the world had, perhaps, never witnessed a robbery on so large a scale." Theodore Holly, the first black Protestant Episcopal Bishop in the U.S., condemned the delegates as having "come together to enact into law, national rapine, robbery and murder".

need more fictional works like Neon Genesis Evangelion in the sense that I want more shit with extraordinarily heavy handed religious (or some other kind of) symbolism that really means almost nothing

Israel dismisses UN rights chief’s request for access to country β€œIsrael is not aware of any added benefit of the high commissioner’s visit at this time,” the Israeli mission to the UN in Geneva told AFP, when asked about Volker Turk’s request to visit.

one of these days I'm gonna fix my sleep so that I'm not staying up all night and waking in the afternoon/evening. it just nice being up at night because everything more quiet and tranquil. also its fun to see the stars and moon at night.

oh and like it gives me some space away from my dad. which is nice. esp. on days when he's been drinking a lot. it is like a nice little retrieve or solace, just a little.

but anyways at the same time if I did fix my sleep, I like seriously hate morning. even when I did have a "proper" sleep schedule. waking up in the morning just feels really disgusting and awful. not from the sleepingness? it just morning feel very.. wrong? I dunno how to describe it. morning just aren't my thing

My Geneva Convention 2.0 Proposal:

  1. Ban terror bombings. Bombing of civilian settlements is illegal.

  2. Ban breechloading firearms. All guns must be muzzleloaders, except for boar-hunting where assault rifles are allowed, of course.

  3. Only martial arts and blunt objects are allowed on militarized borders. Belligerents must escalate to spears before firearms.

I believe with this modest proposal, we can increase Geneva Convention violations by 2000%.

"Snoop dogg gives up weed" is one of those things you read and think it's some sort of weird joke.

One of the worst things about getting older is understanding that things you really liked when you were younger actually sucked ass in a lot of ways.

I just listened to 2112 for the first time in a while and it's just Randian Objectivism.

It has become more and more increasingly evident I have ADHD (something that basically came with me being autistic as a package deal), and my executive functioning skills are completely nonexistent so I can't really commit to anything except the least mentally taxing things. On one hand, it's liberating to know that some of my worst flaws I have been self-conscious about my whole life are literally not my fault, but on another.

When my seasonal job term ends, I'm probably going to ask my doctor about an official ADHD diagnosis and seek meds. If this is the lynchpin to eventually getting me back in college and becoming an actual adult, I would be so happy. I hate being a manchild, even if it isn't 100% my fault.

gotta learn to date myself (i.e. let all my hobbies & passions & things that are potentially interesting about me atrophy until they're dust b/c of apathy brought on by profound loneliness) before I get back out there

I'm not so much a gamer as a guy who buys games then spends hours and hours fucking with everything related to the game, peripherals, hardware, software, mods, whatever, but not actually playing the game per se.

Currently going to learn electrical engineering so i can build a mouse that doesn't require wrist-pronation and also, for no godly reason, has temperature, air pressure, and humidity sensors built in.

It’s so funny how the us government now has to have multiple high stakes votes a year on whether or not it’s going to shut itself down lol

Went to take a quick nap, accidentally slept for over 4 hours and now I’m still tired and have way less time for homework chomsky-yes-honey

High thought: If I wanted to express what a flashback feels like I'm going to be influenced by all of the movies I've seen, I don't have the chance to imagine it without that influence. So in a way movies and culture at large can take away some of our chances at creativity.
