Despite the rules they claim to enforce on their instance, when I see a racist, bigoted, or obnoxiously offensive take here it's pretty much exclusively a user from there.

I made a comment about this today on a thread made by a user from that instance and now I have rather graphic scat porn gifs in my inbox from their users. If you somehow don't know what that means - I am now being sent explicit gifs of people defecating out of their anal orifice because I think their instance is filled with bad faith trolls. They're really doing a lot to dissuade me of that notion.

So fuck you, here's my petition to defederate.

Defederation isn’t the answer. Use the tools you have available as a user and block instances/users you don’t want to share content with.

Whenever I see these threads pop up I always look for this comment. People need learn to block communities and users that you're not keen on, not reach for the de-federation ban-hammer because you personally don't want to see the content.

There's an argument to be made about instances made 100% in bad faith, or where the content is overwhelming stacked, but for most of these situations people need to take care of this themselves

This is the appropriate action.

This is The Way.

So as a user on sh.itjust.works I'm guility of being racist/bigot/bad faith troll? just by signing up to a particular instance because my last one fell over? I suggest you take a look at your own instances rules particulary: "Do not engage in name calling, ad hominem attacks, or any other uncivil behaviour. Criticize ideas, never people" and "No threats, bullying or attacks on an individual or group."

As has been mentioned report the user, block them and move on. Imagine if countries reached for nukes at the first sign of disagreement?

It would take all of about three minutes for you to simply register an account with an instance that already matches your preferences.

I wonder if this is the community for this kind of petition, especially since the petition is instance specific and not about this community in particular.

I don't understand people wanting to defederate entire instances either. If you don't want to see stuff from there just block it. The whole idea of federation seems pretty pointless if all the instances are just gonna end up as walled gardens. Plus there's hundreds (thousands) of users there. You can't just paint them all with the same brush.

[–] SJ0@lemmy.fbxl.net 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's also sort of an egocentric action -- "I don't like some users over there, so nobody should be allowed to interact with any of the users over there"

The threadiverse will continue to grow, and there's going to be people of all kinds joining up. We need to figure out how to coexist as individuals because you can't just have every instance defederate with everyone else because there might be a bad user.

[–] AnonymousLlama@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yep spot on. I get that people have their own preferences and tolerances, but that's what it is, thier own, it feels pretty entitled to think everyone else should be affected when you can just block communities and people yourself

[–] elkaki@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 year ago

If this is why people want their instances to do it that's mainly because lemmy hasn't give appropriate tools at the user level to block entire instances unlike Kbin or Mastodon. (For now you can kind of block seeing them with apps like connect for lemmy, but someone from that instance would still be able to see and repply to your comments, or send you DMs)

As to why a user would want to block an instance and not just particular communities, there are many use cases, for example I didn't want to bñur NSFW images but I didn't want to see my frontpage filled with porn, so instead of blocking 10000 communities I just blocked 2 nsfw instances. There is also the culture fostered inside some communities that can lead them to become filled with alt right people or openly facistic rcho chamber which often harrass people, especially minorities.

I agree completely this request is dumb, but this doesn't look like the community to have this discussion.

Locking due to post being off topic.

[–] OutrageousUmpire@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Have you tried blocking the users in question?

[–] wesker@lemmy.sdf.org 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I am now being sent explicit gifs of people defecating out of their anal orifice

Where do you expect them to defecate from?

[–] AnonymousLlama@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

OP might find these jokes a little shitty

[–] ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com 8 points 1 year ago

But it just works?

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, the scat spammer guy sucks. I saw it before too but I reported and it was quickly gone.

But they could have signed up at any instance to do that and now that you're bringing attention to it I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

Have you been reporting the bigots or just assuming admins should already know about it?

[–] Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

From discussions on Matrix I'd say the admin seems to care, but it's not necessarily easy to monitor and detect these users without reports.

Report report report. The admins are all pretty busy just keeping the thing going.

I don't see reasons to defederate unless it really becomes out of hand, but that stuff can really originate from any instance.

Yes. This isn't big tech where tech daddy is sitting over your shoulder reading your messages to sell your info to advertisers.
