Jimmy I still remember your ultra religious father busting into your room as we listened *to my tape of AC/DC and him yelling at us how "we" don't listen to that kind of music in his house.

I also recall within a year your older sister was knocked up as a teen, and you went to juvenile detention not long after and seemed to never stay out for very long.

I'm sorry for the evil I brought upon your family for playing Highway to Hell for 40 seconds that day...

Kids these days probably don't even remember cancelling ~~French~~ FREEDOM fries for the same reason.

Those Dixie Chicks met the same fate as Ellen once she came out officially. People who loved them for their music turned on them so hard...

They're just "The Chicks" now. Like Dolly, they dropped the Dixie.

Given that Dixiecrat meant Southern Racist, I think it was a smart move.

I'm not from the US but remember the Freedom Fries weirdness. Are they still around? If not, how long did they last?

[–] BaronVonBort@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

It was mostly in the cafeteria at the Pentagon. Didn’t last very long because people said it was “stupid”

It never actually caught on in the mainstream, but it was widely reported on. Kind of like the movement to rename french toast or any of the other manufactured outrages one finds on cable news here. It started after the French objected to the invasion of Iraq, but was only really in the media for a couple years at most.

The "French" part was cancelled because France wouldn't let the US use their airspace, made us go around on the way east.

[–] bouh@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I doubt that's true. But France didn't go with nato on this invasion.

France went to war in Afghanistan but not Iraq.

I served with French troops in Afghanistan amongst other NATO allies, Spanish and Australian.

But french fries were renamed Freedom Fries and everything worked out for the better. /s

This is their artistic response to the their cancelling

Pretty sure they’re called “The Dixie Chicks” and not just “The Chicks”, though maybe that’s a fan name or something. Should still give the full name for those who maybe never heard of them.

[–] SirSamuel@lemmy.world 84 points 11 months ago (2 children)

They dropped the Dixie part in 2020, out of respect for BLM and to remove themselves from association with the Confederacy

[–] paddirn@lemmy.world 25 points 11 months ago

Had not heard that before, makes sense though I guess.
