A federal judge threatened to kick Donald Trump out of court Wednesday after the former president made repeated comments within earshot of the jury hearing a civil defamation trial against him.

Trump muttered that the case is a “witch hunt,” among other similar comments, according to a lawyer for the writer E. Jean Carroll, who is suing Trump over derogatory comments he made about her while he was president.

The episode prompted a stern rebuke from U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who repeatedly tussled with Trump and his lawyers during a testy courtroom session Wednesday morning.

“Mr. Trump has the right to be present here. That right can be forfeited, and it can be forfeited if he is disruptive, which is what has been reported to me,” the judge said.

conservatives really picking the best people.

[–] gregorum@lemm.ee 76 points 10 months ago (1 children)

They want the worst people. They love it. It makes them feel better about being such shitty people themselves.

[–] IHeartBadCode@kbin.social 38 points 10 months ago (1 children)

For years they told us that Government would mess everything up.

And by god they're going to prove it!

[–] tsonfeir@lemm.ee 9 points 9 months ago

Every accusation is a confession

[–] zcd@lemmy.ca 61 points 10 months ago (5 children)

So it’s cool if we fuck around in court? Contempt isn’t a thing anymore?

[–] Badeendje@lemmy.world 36 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Federal judges (should) have a lot more decorum and patience. Actually all judges should have, but the US also popularized the mini dictators that dole out ridiculous punishments for "misbehaving".

People in court are not there because they bought tickets to the venue for their own enjoyment.

While I agree Trump should also have some decorum, he is effectively rich trailer trash. The judge treats him as such and in my book that makes the judge an icon.

The judge is above his petty nonsense but does take the time to make trump feel he is not in charge every time he steps out. And I think this is far worse for Trump's feelings than being stuck in a holding cell, that would just fuel his martyr syndrome.

[–] twistypencil@lemmy.world 10 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, but when he is influencing the jury with his comments, that is different

[–] Bdtrngl@lemmy.world 23 points 9 months ago

He's rich and white so business as usual.

[–] PugJesus@kbin.social 9 points 9 months ago

For rich people? No.

[–] extant@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It's just an up charge like getting soup with your meal for the rich.

He's above the law. He knows it.

[–] wildcardology@lemmy.world 45 points 9 months ago (4 children)

That's why he keeps doing it. They just threaten, no real consequences.

[–] APassenger@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago

Isn't a lack of self control central to this case?

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

It's more that the judges will play by the rules so super hard that Trump can never appeal on the basis of unfair treatment. The consequence is really that the trials continue on as if he had never spoken, proving that his crying and hand waving have no real effect.

[–] octopus_ink@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 months ago

Yep. What motivation does he have for exercising control? Will they give him a fine that's like pocket lint to him again?

[–] experbia@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

It's win/win for him. Either he shows how he can't be controlled which riles up his supporters, or he can turn consequences around as evidence of the "corrupt Biden deep state" or something and get massive fundraising income and maybe convince some of his followers to launch terrorist attacks. This judge is having to weigh possible domestic terror retaliation against keeping his courtroom orderly.

[–] SleepingTower@lemmy.world 43 points 9 months ago (2 children)

While "former president" is a correct title, the media should really use "petulant man-child" instead. Far more accurate .

[–] PilferJynx@lemmy.world 24 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 12 points 9 months ago

Fuckface 45

[–] Oderus@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Petulant man-child also applies to Phony Stark.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 34 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Not being able to control oneself is a trait I require in a president.

[–] platypus_plumba@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (3 children)

He's obviously child trapped in an ugly and obese man's body. He thinks he's above everyone else because he has more money thanks to his daddy.

He's just a little brat.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

He's pouting. He is losing and can't accept it. It's pathetic.

[–] platypus_plumba@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Would be hilarious if the judge told him "will you just shut up, man?"

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Hilarious and poignant. However, also a mistrial.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago

Lead exposure plus a traumatic childhood and inbuilt narcissism made him the man he is today.

That is why we only let them have the nuclear football. It is the only way M.A.D. works, when the enemy has no idea if you are going to hit the button.

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

Trump's nuclear football only contains the Staples' "that was easy" button

Aaaand that's why two of his lawyers withdrew only shortly before the trial one even just the day before. They realised how unhinged he is and that there was no way to stop him, so they left the sinking ship.

[–] TheJims@lemmy.world 27 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This lawless former president is a disgusting degenerate just like his cult followers.

[–] DrMango@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Don't forget twice-impeached accused rapist

[–] dangblingus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 9 months ago

He was found liable of rape in the civil suit with E Jean Carrol. So confirmed rapist!

[–] grue@lemmy.world 23 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Don't just kick him out; give him a time-out in a holding cell!

[–] Zozano@lemy.lol 5 points 9 months ago

time-of-his-life cell, when?

[–] Omega_Jimes@lemmy.ca 19 points 9 months ago (1 children)

"I do not recognize the authority of a court that hangs the gilded flag. A flag with gilded edges signifies an admiralty court, an admiralty court signifies that this is a court martial. I can not be court martialed twice. Further more..."

"Bailiff, gag that man."

[–] agitatedpotato@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago

The fact that Dale Gribble, would be the most intelligent and sane person on the new right wing conspiracy populations is as hilarious as it is terrifying.

[–] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.world 18 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Honestly I don't think Trump should be kicked out of court. I say let him ruin his case and insult the judge until he's found guilty for contempt of court as well.

[–] skulblaka@startrek.website 11 points 9 months ago (1 children)

He's already well past what would be considered contempt of court for literally any other living human being. They're giving him as much rope as is possible for two reasons, one being so that absolutely no one can argue a mistrial, and the second being that he continues to attempt to hang himself with every length of rope let out to him. May as well let him continue.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

so that absolutely no one can argue a mistrial

This is the part that people keep missing. Judges go into "Super Professional Mode" when these things happen and run their court so by the book that it's impossible for anyone to complain bias/unfair treatment.

Mr. Trump has the right to be present here. That right can be forfeited, and it can be forfeited if he is disruptive...

Doesn't that make it a privilege?

[–] SlothMama@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (4 children)

Exactly. A right shouldn't be able to be revoked, otherwise by definition it's not a right.

[–] hsinner@kbin.social 11 points 9 months ago

You're confusing the word revoked with the word forfeited. He's forfeiting it by disrupting the court. It's like the right to remain silent when you're arrested. The officer arresting you can't revoke it and make you answer or say anything, but you can choose to forfeit it and start talking.

[–] ninja@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Then you have no rights. All freedoms granted you can be taken away for committing the right crime.

'You just can't control yourself'

The judge apparently doesn't understand the difference between "can't" and "don't want to".

[–] NaNABCV@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

Biden needs to punch this guy out
