It is not better graphics.

It is not unlimited power potential.

It is Custom Made Content by the fans, available FOR FREE, sometimes after YEARS of work.

What do I mean with it?

1: native PC games such as Fallout New Vegas that get such an amount of fan content that one can customize the game to the point it becomes a remake of itself, with much more in-game content and much more improved UI, mechanics and behind-the-game numbers.

  1. emulated games that receive massive overhauls to apply on the very base games that make tjpse obsolete: ever heard of Chrono Trigger+ 3.0 or FF6 T-Edition Ex?

These are fan-made remakes that are so much improved upon the base games, the bases themselves, despite being a timeless masterpiece, feel desolate and with very little quality content.

In short: PC gaming allows the fans to fix potentially good games, or make masterpieces even better!

What is your take on it?

In addition to all those things:

  • My Ship of Theseus PC is never obsolete
  • I can minimize e-waste (and cost) by upgrading individual parts as needed
  • It uses no extra space, since I already need a PC for non-gaming tasks

It's quite ugly if you ask me, but I'm 100% behind the spirit of this. Building or buying unique and interesting computers is absolutely a highlight of pc gaming!

I only used that picture as a thumbnail lol!

I know I'm nitpicking, but if you're about to post about the greatness of usermade content in games, posting an image of highly custom hardware is a bit misleading. An image of modded game content would have been more appropriate, just saying.

But I do agree with the post otherwise. It's good stuff.

Also, support the mod makers you like, srsly, the tireless mod workers should get some love. :)

Yes, mods are one of the big reasons I prefer PC over console. A game with a rich mod community allows you to customize your game experience.

A game with good bones can become something that is played long-term.
