"Musicians today just don't have talent anymore like they did when I was a kid"

-literally every generation since the invention of music

There's a new radio station in my city - they don't call themselves a classic hits station, but that's clearly what they are. Their playlist is from my formative years, the 90s and 00s. It's been a stark reminder that in spite of how I remember it, there was a lot of crap in what we listened to back then. A lot of crap. Guess I've had my rose-tinted glasses on.

Yeah people love to romanticize music from the 90s but they always forget how much cringy terrible music came out between all those classic songs lol

I’ve always put it down to selection bias. Listening to a 60’s/70’s/80’s auto generated playlist on YouTube Music will eventually run out of the hits of the era and get into the weeds. The terrible, terrible weeds.

But according to my parents that was the hay day of music. It goes to show if you only listen to the good stuff then you’ll fool yourself into thinking that it was all good.

Yep, plenty of bands with 1 (ONE) good song in the entire career. I made some mistakes in my youth buying an album based on a successful single and everything else was utter crap.

The generation following Mozart had it rough

"I'm older so I know more."

"I don't understand anything these kids are doing today."

"I've done it this way my entire life. If we do it a better way that means I've been wrong my entire life."

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.

-Socrates

Socrates, who was famously sentenced to death because of his lack of respect for authority and constant chatter.

Hmm, maybe the quote wasn't meant as an insult after all...

If this generation is finished, then it's the previous generation's doing. It's not like kids and people just entering the workforce have enough financial or political power to actually affect anything.

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 16 points 7 months ago

Why be introspective when I can blame it all on Fortnite, trap music, and TikTok?

[-] lordnikon@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago

"This generation is finished" --previous generation understanding the powerful of the previous, previous generation caused climate change and the displacement and famine that go with that.

[-] radix@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

"The last generation just doesn't get it" - current generation.

[-] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago

In most cases they really don't. I try to keep that in mind and make my best effort as I push toward my 40s to remember that it's not my world anymore and try to keep caught up on things.
It really bugs me seeing my dad, who used to stay on top of new tech and try to keep up with things, just give up and not even try to understand things anymore. Adults just don't remember what it was like to be teenagers when they get into their 30s and 40s.

[-] Lath@kbin.earth 5 points 7 months ago

Sure they do. It's called a midlife crisis.

[-] dustyData@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

While quoting ideological statement made 6 generations ago that the last generation actually helped popularize.

[-] mlg@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

"Damn these kids are growing up on locked down pay money Apple tech"

"Back in my day we used to play quality flash games for free and mess with the desktop shortcuts to screw with the previous generation"

[-] TheGalacticVoid@lemm.ee 5 points 7 months ago

Now we can do it to screw with the future generation
