I was trying to post a video but it wouldn't show up as available to upload in Jerboa, is this a per community thing or is it across all of lemmy? It would make sense because videos are inherently a larger file size, if that is the reason

Video is not supported. A lot of people seem to use https://catbox.moe to upload videos as it allows hotlinking.

Yep, I used catbox to embed this video.

From an instance Admin perspective - image hosting eats up a tonne of space, allowing video would be a much bigger undertaking. Even Peertube instances tend to restrict user numbers and the amount they can upload.

Don't know but I wouldn't recommend it. Your instance may have them disabled because they are expensive to host. You can host them on Streamable for free and without an account but they expire after 3 days. Create an account and I think you get 90 days. 250mb max.

The pict-rs backend can be configured to allow it, but it is AFAIK disabled by default and would also be a problem storage wise most likely.

Why not use pixelfed to upload and then to link it here?

[–] rglullis@communick.news 8 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Because this means creating yet another account at a service who is probably not ready to bear the costs of becoming a video hosting provider?

[–] Temperche@feddit.de 5 points 8 months ago

If people thought that, lemmy wouldnt exist. Try it first :)

idt pixelfed should be used as an imagehost. there are many services for that and it will only make pixelfed worse if people use it for that purpose.

If there is one thing thats comically inconsistent and in desperate need of work done to it, it be GIFs and Videos. It seems with everything uploaded you get a different result. We really need some standartification when it comes to it

Wouldn’t it be possible to create a Lemmy instance on Peertube (linked to our Lemmy accounts) just for this reason?

I know the videos would take a large space, but as peertube is a video platform, it wouldn’t be such a problem I guess.

Boost app does but yea try to use pixelfed or similar
