Fuck yeah!

Tried to be legal for a while but they keep increasing the price for stuff I can't own...

So I'm back to 100% theft.

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 24 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Almost correct, except piracy isn't theft

Yup, it's copyright violation. And copyright is intended to prevent companies from stealing content from creators, not screw over customers.

Make the content easy to access or people will find another way.

[–] soloner@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Same. It's the thought that counts. Better than just blindly pirating without any attempt to participate in the market. But when the market gets absurd like this, this is the only recourse.

I'm stupider. I pay for a bunch of streaming shows, have a large Plex library, and will still often watch Pluto with commercials.

Usually halfway through I'll realize I'm being stupid and finish the show on Plex so I don't waste time on commercials.

I say this to my spouse all the time, it’s on our Plex? Why are you watching it with commercials?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Why are you watching it with commercials?

Apparently because they're stupider 🤷

Edit: what's with the downvotes? It was a lighthearted reference to their own assessment, not mine 😄

[–] KillerTofu@lemmy.world 12 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Well it wasn’t my assessment.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I bet they'll be willing to share custody of it if you ask nicely, though 😉

I setup jellyfin with private tracker finally last week. We haven't used any streaming service in years, so I was shocked to find out we would have needed 3 different services for 2 movies and one series we wanted to watch.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 20 points 6 months ago

But what if...I were to torrent my media instead of paying exorbitant amounts to multiple companies? Oh ho ho ho, delightfully devilish, Seymour!

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 18 points 6 months ago (3 children)

its been fun. ive been sailing the seas for.. shit... since inception. remember Myth!? watching all these providers come and go is almost entertaining.

the only real affect ive ever felt was once streaming became a thing, that content became higher quality and hits the water far faster than it used to. so, thanks for that!

[–] tordenflesk@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

Chuck it into Sonarr and let TRaSH-guides deal with whatever source is the best.

Amen, Lucifer.

Ive been an avowed pirate since i learned how to because i was so mad at Microsoft for selling windows ME. that OS was so bad it drove me to a life of crime lol.

But i still do it the old way, with torrents or streams. Have you kept with the times? Do you use plex or jellyfin or one of the other systems i see the fancy plates use?

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 5 points 6 months ago (2 children)

ive been running storage devices (nas) since the late 90s... for media server its been MythTV.. then later SageTV (google murdered) then XMBC and now its kodi+jellyfin.

initially it was a lot of ripping physical media... it was awesome when netflix came up with the 'we'll send you 7 disks at a time (and then 5 and then 3), i was returning them within hours of receipt. nowadays i have a seedbox/central torrenting server so the kids can help.

i still have MP3s i downloaded on the OG napster.

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Remember Kazaa? That's where I learnt about different codec's and the importance of virus checking files before running them, well until Kazaa++ came out and did it for you.

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 3 points 6 months ago

Well shit, you just unlocked a memory I haven't touched in decades!.. Damn I miss the old p2p days, where you had to earn that mp3 of Destiny's Child Bootylicious with a weird audio artifact mid way through!

[–] z500@startrek.website 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Lol 20 years later I still have an album where my favorite track is only 98% complete because my dialup connection dropped when I was downloading it from Kazaa, and I just said eh, good enough.

yes! this is me! a few songs have a glitch that, after 20+ years is absolutely ingrained in my brain.

it would be trivial to replace, but i just dont care enough to do it

[–] Gallardo994@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 months ago

I wouldn't mind paying for streaming services IF and ONLY IF they had everything day one just like Spotify works with music. I fucking hate paying for Netflix just to realize I can't watch something new as it's Paramount+ exclusive, and P+ doesn't even let me register in my country. Always sailing for anything video related.

[–] galoisghost@aussie.zone 5 points 6 months ago

I have Paramount+ to support the A-Leagues. Optus Sport to support the WSL and NWSL. Prime because I’m weak and shop on Amazon and Proton VPN for everything else.

[–] soloner@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Does anyone know how I can get on a private tracker site. I have a whole containerized home server setup but still stuck on TPB. I'm ready to serve. Would love an invite.
