Ho Chi Minh, real name Nguyen Tat Thanh (1890-1969), Vietnamese Communist leader and the principal force behind the Vietnamese struggle against French colonial rule.

Ho was born on May 19, 1890, in the village of Kimlien, Annam (central Vietnam), the son of an official who had resigned in protest against French domination of his country. Ho attended school in Hue and then briefly taught at a private school in Phan Thiet.

In 1911 he was employed as a cook on a French steamship liner and thereafter worked in London and Paris. After World War I, using the pseudonym Nguyen Ai Quoc (Nguyen the Patriot), Ho engaged in radical activities and was in the founding group of the French Communist party. He was summoned to Moscow for training and, in late 1924, he was sent to Canton, China, where he organized a revolutionary movement among Vietnamese exiles.

He was forced to leave China when local authorities cracked down on Communist activities, but he returned in 1930 to found the Indochinese Communist party (ICP). He stayed in Hong Kong as representative of the Communist International. In June 1931 Ho was arrested there by British police and remained in prison until his release in 1933.

He then made his way back to the Soviet Union, where he reportedly spent several years recovering from tuberculosis. In 1938 he returned to China and served as an adviser with Chinese Communist armed forces. When Japan occupied Vietnam in 1941, he resumed contact with ICP leaders and helped to found a new Communist-dominated independence movement, popularly known as the Vietminh, that fought the Japanese.

In August 1945, when Japan surrendered, the Vietminh seized power and proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) in Hanoi. Ho Chi Minh, now known by his final and best-known pseudonym (which means the “Enlightener”), became president.

The French were unwilling to grant independence to their colonial subjects, and in late 1946 war broke out. For eight years Vietminh guerrillas fought French troops in the mountains and rice paddies of Vietnam, finally defeating them in the decisive Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. Ho, however, was deprived of his victory. Subsequent negotiations at Geneva divided the country, with only the North assigned to the Vietminh.

The DRV, with Ho still president, now devoted its efforts to constructing a Communist society in North Vietnam. In the early 1960s, however, conflict resumed in the South, where Communist-led guerrillas mounted an insurgency against the U.S.-supported regime in Saigon.

Ho, now in poor health, was reduced to a largely ceremonial role, while policy was shaped by others. On September 3, 1969, he died in Hanoi of heart failure. In his honor, after the Communist conquest of the South in 1975, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh was not only the founder of Vietnamese communism, he was the very soul of the revolution and of Vietnam's struggle for independence. His personal qualities of simplicity, integrity, and determination were widely admired, not only within Vietnam but elsewhere as well.

Some discourse on twitter rn about how you can't compare hypothetical retributive community justice to historical lynching because those lynchings were motivated by racism and presumably in the future we will have a post-racist society.

And I feel like if you can just assume post-racism, why wouldn't you assume the future will be post-misogyny, and that there won't be any predators to bring to justice? Can't we have a post-justice society, because all will be just and good by default?

Feeling like an idiot that I haven't been punching up the freelance work I've been doing in cover letters. Sure, it's just proofreading and fact-checking, but it's with GENERATIVE AI AND LLMs so any hiring manager should stop thinking and hit the big "HIRE" button when they read that xi-button

Genuine question,, is there a book or scholarly source somewhere where I can read about why Britain hates kids so much? Is it a relic of the industrial revolution in a highly stratified society? But even the rich kids get abused at the fancy boarding schools, before they go on to positions of power where they abuse others. When did this start, what is going on with that gloomy cocaine isle, and is there a British Frantz Fanon who can explain it to me?

You know how there's that one thing you've always wanted to do, and have never told anyone, because it's unconventional and they think it would be a little risky to do even though you've done your homework and know what you're getting into? Stuff like parachuting or bungee jumping?

Next weekend, baby. I'm not telling anyone what it is I'm doing, so that none of you can tailor your objections accurately. So I invite your warnings against doing whatever you think it is I'll be doing.

So one of my coworkers made a really obnoxious comment to me the other day and it's sort of pushed me over the limit with this shit job. I'm better than this place. I've only stuck around here because I became complacent and depressed. But I know I'm capable of more than this.

I've started seriously looking into going back to school. I've procrastinated long enough. I'm still undecided on what I want to pursue, but I need to get the fuck out. I love history and artsy stuff, but maybe I need to go for some basic shit like accounting or marketing. Or maybe I can become an epic techbro. It's very overwhelming but I'm tired of giving up.

Anyone else been in a similar position?

Edit: the more research I'm doing the more disheartened I'm becoming. Seems like every career is oversaturated and people are miserable. Maybe I should do a trade instead

feeling very alienated and frustrated and dehumanized irl due to neurodiverse issues, lectured by friends for not seeming engaged enough in conversations, lectured by parents for being unemployed, now i'm second guessing my social life and financial stability and housing access on top of the usual existential nightmare of reality, plus my foot has been messed up for like a week i think from tendonitis from driving a lot, and my alcoholic friend relapsed today. i should have thrown away the alcohol a long time ago but that might have caused drama today that i could not handle. i am understating a lot of this, i almost made a much more depressing and unpleasant journal-post wall of text. getting high and typing this post has distracted me from my intrusive thoughts and ideations that have been keeping me literally physically and mentally petrified for the last 3 or 4 hours, so lets see if i can sleep now.

(i accidentally posted this in the news mega earlier. sorry!)

daily health complaint: doctors can be so useless lmao. I actually snapped at my doctor today because she tried to imply that my insert laundry list of concerning symptoms here were a result of anxiety because I was wearing a p100. I feel a little bad about it but not that bad.

anyways, shit is getting better but still not great. I hope I get some good sleep.

'booby' trap is based on the birds, lmao

its easy to trap a booby, it's a crude art. a booby trap is a crude trap.

which in modern times is kind of infused with a hidden, ancient ruin connotation, but thats all from post ww1 comics and pulp shit, drawing from ww1 trench lingo

The two oddest conversations I've had in high school (in that it's crazy for a 16 year old to say to another)

  1. A friend seemed jealous that I was good at math and physics with little effort, and he told me "you are wasting your talents"

  2. A friend noticed I had a crush on the same girl as him and he asked whether I had "yellow fever" like he did.

Bro, what. I am 16 years old, I am too young to have a fetish and simply attracted to every girl that talks to me.

I saw a tiktok of a vet shaving a cow's hoof that had some kind of problem and I can't stop thinking about and squicking out about it. Like I know the hoof is to a cow like a fingernail to us so it was fine but seeing that big ol knife just carve through it gave me uncomfortable chills.

Wound up watching the whole ten minute video though lmao

I've been in the workforce for 2 years since my PhD, and I just can't wait to retire. Thing is I could've done teaching and research for the rest of my life and been happy. Work doesn't have to be a miserable waste of life, but it is.

Watching right wing Dr who ""fans"" malding about David Tennant's complete support for trans rights and Ncuti Gateway being black and gay is so funny. When did these people even like the show if they're so offended by basic progressive stuff from the show that holds the record in the BBC for the most complaints about a single episode after they showed a gay kiss about a decade before gay marriage was legalised?

The worst is when the person you hate has changed and now you have to reconcile the fact that since you have the same feeling you did from the past, in a way you're the one who hasn't changed.

But that's why my enemies from grade school should face violent repercussions though so i don't have to self reflect and parse out my responsibility to my own experience of the world.
