On this day in 1970, the largest U.S. farm worker strike in history, known as the "Salad Bowl Strike", began when field workers, organized with César Chávez and the United Farm Workers (UFW), struck, doubling the price of lettuce and costing sellers $500,000 a day.

The UFW had just won the Delano Grape Strike, which had lasted an astonishing five years, winning contracts with dozens of grape growers that were the first of their kind in agricultural history.

The origins of the Salad Bowl Strike lay in a jurisdictional dispute with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which had won the right to organize field workers after concluding a successful strike of drivers and packers in the lettuce producing sector in July.

The UFW strongly contested this claim, and, after negotiations broke down, between 5,000-7,000 field workers went on strike. The labor action was not just a strike, but also included mass pickets, boycotts, and secondary boycotts by the participants.

The price of lettuce almost doubled immediately, and the interruption to work cost lettuce growers approximately $500,000 a day. The strike was a bitter dispute which suffered violence and state repression. César Chávez, a leading labor organizer, was jailed after refusing to stop the picketing on court order. On November 4th, 1970 a UFW regional office was bombed.

The strike ended on March 26th, 1971 when the Teamsters and UFW signed a new jurisdictional agreement reaffirming the UFW's right to organize field workers, however jurisdictional disputes between the UFW and Teamsters continued for years afterward. In 1975, the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act (CALRA) became law, establishing the right to collective bargaining for farmworkers in that state, a first in U.S. history.

Critical support for Pittsburgh eviction guy. Sounds like he was full of brainworms but someone has to start shooting at the cops when they evict people. Supposedly he took down a few drones, too. Who knows, maybe we just need a few :brainworms: sovereign citizens to get the ball rolling on a rent strike in the "strike while the iron is hot" and "decapitation strike" sense of the word.

The shock troops of fascism on the mass political level are drawn from members of the lower-middle class who feel the upward thrust of the masses more acutely. These classes feel that any dislocation of the present economy resulting from the upward thrust of the masses would affect their status first. They are joined by that sector of the working class which is backward enough to be affected by nationalistic trappings and the loyalty syndrome that psychologists have termed the "authoritarian personality." One primary aim of the fascist arrangement is to extend and develop this new pig class, to removed and diffuse working-class consciousness with a psycho-social appeal to man's herd instincts. Development and exploitation of the authoritarian syndrome is at the center of totalitarian capitalism (fascism).

Rewatching Rogue One for the first time since Andor. It's better after Andor because at least it's not so jarring that Cassian has no character development, but still disappointing.

Like it really feels like they were so close to a great Star Wars film, but in a lot of ways it's kind of a mess. Like it's so rushed.

shrug-outta-hecks still better than any other Disney Star Wars flick though

I wanted to sleep in to my normal time this morning but my body was like hey wake up and have the runs, right now. And normally Chinese food never bothers my stomach, the hell?

Imagining tom clancy calling into the stavros halkias advice hotline like "I wrote a cool book and now the US Army wants to give me a job, what are the prospects for getting pussy as an instructor at West Point?”

Nicotine is by far the most effective non-prescription appetite suppressant I've ever encountered and that is terrifying. A few puffs on the vape will take me from ravenous to completely satiated in seconds, and I won't be hungry again for hours afterwards. Just have to be super fucking careful not to use it more than once per day because of the obvious.

[–] charlie@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Nicotine is also good (for me) at keeping me awake. It's like the perfect drug to push onto overworked people. Smoke so you can work through your lunch break, smoke so that you can stay alert and work later into the night. Smoke in the morning to wake up to start work. It fucking sucks, so glad I quit.

Didn't throw up last night party-blob

My stomach felt so weird right before bed. I've actually been sleeping poorly and was debating taking an ambien but figured feeling like you might throw up and ambien may not mix well lol

It feels like you have to choose between having any kind of principles or being successful, enjoying things, and having friends.

ventA person in this group I'm in is always talking about how they hate fascism and they're ACAB and trans rights. They then started talking about their work and how they called in the police to a major store that was being robbed. They commented how they ruined that person's life and laughed like it was cute. And no one else thought that was bad, like that's just fine and normal. So I told them it wasn't funny and if I had done that I would feel really bad. But I had to just disengage because no one was on my side and I got scolded fir trying to shame someone just doing their job. Am I being over dramatic? The way they acted like it was cute that some desperate person is going to jail was sick. But I can't make a fuss about it because even though everyone in that group is all about "fuck cops", no one is on my side. I can either say nothing and stay, leave quietly, or make a stink and get ran out. If I leave then I loose the meager friends I've been able to make through a lot of mental effort and getting past trauma and I loose a lot of support from people who are helping me draw and get noticed. I don't know, just feels bad. 😕
