hordes of protesters and lines of cops

Wonder which side is being taken here...

“2020 snuck up on us,” Snelling acknowledged in a recent Tribune interview. “Let’s tell the cold, hard truth. We did not have the level of preparedness to deal with something that was that random that popped up on us.”

"We were murdering people so often on the street in broad daylight, we didn't know it would be that one specific murder that has some repercussions."

[–] soratoyuki@lemmy.world 86 points 5 months ago

For fucks sake, the 1968 DNC protests are what popularized the term 'police riot.'

[–] Drusas@kbin.run 85 points 5 months ago

Later, he was heard explaining:

"Guys, it'll be okay this time. We've had decades to train our cops to more effectively treat civilians as enemy combatants and to stock up on surplus military gear. This time we've got the weaponry to keep the rabble in hand."

“If you’re Biden and the Democratic Party and the mayor of Chicago, you just want peace and calm and stability,” said Andrew Baer, a University of Alabama at Birmingham history professor who studies policing and social movements. “You don’t want the bad optics of either suppressing a protest or the protest embarrassing the coronation of Biden.”

...

Has anyone thought of maybe getting Biden to open a dialogue with protestors?

Like, ideally he'd just stop supporting the genocide, but at least he could pretend to listen to them.

Invite them to even speak at the convention to show that while Biden himself might not agree, the party is open to compromise with the left to form a coalition to prevent trump?

I don't get paid millions to run political campaigns, but it seems like that solves both problems, and all it takes is giving people left of Biden a seat at the table and a little oxygen to speak.

It's what he keeps saying we need to do with conservatives. It just seems backwards to treat them that way and progressives this way when looking at how likely they are to vote Biden.

“Listening” to people while having zero intention to ever action their concerns is meaningless PR.

And frankly there is no compromise to supporting genocide. You can’t just have a little genocide as a treat.

If you put a conservative on the stage, the audience of democrats will dislike what they're saying, most likely, and Biden will still look good.

If you put a progressive on the stage, the audience of democrats might very well be disappointed in Biden, not the situation you want at your convention.

Is your advice actually good for the party and the country? Probably. Would it happen? Most likely not.

I disagree, those aren't bribes to make Biden have these views. He genuinely would support Israel no matter what including if they stopped campaign donations.

From a game theory perspective:

If you bribe someone, they may ask for more money, the higher up they get, the more they cost. Or someone else could offer more to change.

On a long timeline you want to instead spend that money elevating people who already have the required beliefs. Even if you stop paying them, they may get the legs to carry themselves and continue doing what you want for free.

You can't buy that type of loyalty, but you can use money to get that loyalty into power.

If you want to see what that would be like, watch this scene from the movie "Nixon" (1995).

Has anyone thought of maybe getting Biden to open a dialogue with protestors?

And the protestors are just supposed to fall for that?

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Probably not, but it would help him beat Trump.

Like, he's doing so little, that even obvious pandering and just admitting he ain't doing enough would be huge.

For a lot of people, it's less the specific issues Biden refuses to compromise on, it's that he's willing to bend over backwards and give conservatives whatever they want, but won't even acknowledge anyone on his left or under 60 years old.

He honestly doesn't have to do much to be good enough to get more votes.

[–] masquenox@lemmy.world -3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Probably not, but it would help him beat Trump.

I doubt that... Biden in up against more than just Trump. He's basically been painted into a realpolitik corner - and, to be fair to Biden, it isn't even really Biden's fault.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

No he hasn't, literally all he needs to do is just give the appearance that he gives half a damn what the people whose votes he needs want from him.

It's that fucking basic, and Biden just won't do it.

Not even getting into how Biden's actions with the Southern border and Israel are 100% his fault. People were/are/will be begging him to not do that shit.

But he won't listen, even if it give trump another term.

Cpd has secret black sites in the city they torture people in, so forgive my doubt that they've changed.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

Do you have any sources to read up on this?

There is a lot of shit going on, but this feels a little far fetched.

[–] KAYDUBELL@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

This was a breaking story years ago, but yes they have torture black sites

[–] cerement@slrpnk.net 30 points 5 months ago (2 children)

“CPD isn’t the same police force it was in 1968”

🇽 Doubt

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Honestly, it’s accurate. They’ve had substantially more threat neutralization training from the military since then.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 7 points 5 months ago

And a lot more military-style equipment.

[–] finley@lemm.ee 21 points 5 months ago

“We’re gonna murder a lot more LiBrUlZ!” they were heard chanting in white hoods and around a burning cross…

[–] Cosmicomical@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

When an american says world, what they mean is actually USA

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Pretty much shrug.

[–] HurlingDurling@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

Oh yeah we are, even though I wish it wasn't the case. However, it's always important to know what is up with as many other countries as possible without becoming obsessed about it, that's why I wish the stupid media would talk about the farmer protests in the EU, or the atrocities happening in New Caledonia

[–] Drusas@kbin.run 17 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Really, I don't understand why they would choose Chicago of all places. Make it easier to group "The Chicago DNC Police Riots" together in future textbooks?

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The idea that either event would be featured in a textbook below a university political science course is a bit of a dream anyway.

But I can only imagine the exam confusion.

Excuse me sir is this about 1968 or 2024?

[–] Drusas@kbin.run 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

It was included in my high school history textbook, though it was brief.

[–] AshMan85@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago

Yeah, will probably worse.

[–] profdc9@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Though your brother's bound and gagged And they've chained him to a chair Won't you please come to Chicago Just to sing

In a land that's known as freedom How can such a thing be fair Won't you plaese come to Chicago For the help we can bring

We can change the world - Re-arrange the world It's dying - to get better
