The same is true for all companies' self driving cars, and the companies would gladly sell all that data to China or any other government

Its not like the entire US isnt already mapped and photographed on Google maps, freely available for them to use.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Even that they don't do things like border crossing.

Oof, the USA is a prime place for these sorts of tests as we’re so lax with data security policies. The government needs to do more to curtail such behavior that a foreign country is engaging in on US soil. However, our government needs to actually function to make this a possibility.

This is just fearmongering. Oh no the sneaky Chinese cars are mapping our potholes...

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 months ago

People have derived significant details with a lot less...

More likely mapping probable routes for supply lines. In turn if they get a self driving application, they'll sell our data back to us in the form of that application

I'm sure those American Corpos dont have infallible security on their databases either. Could get much more information hacking them and their "partners".

[–] AnarchoSnowPlow@midwest.social 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Why bother hacking when they can just buy it all from the same folks the cops do?

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Lol they probably do

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Don’t worry they’re doing that too

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Hacking? They can just buy it.

You're not wrong; your comment is just irrelevant in this context. It's not about whataboutism.

I think it’s a valid concern in that we need real laws around data and what you’re allowed to do with it or China/ whoever can just buy the data from an american company without needing to do anything themselves. Similarly forcing a sale of TikTok is meaningless if China can buy data from them or compromise their security ala solar winds. There’s a reason Saudi Arabia is so deeply invested in Uber, Reddit, lucid, etc.

I'm kind of questioning the governments intentions and worries. I get why its bad China can just take that data. But its not like our own corporations are bastions of privacy or safety and they even have data on when you fuck in your car. So what's going on here? Nobody cares about us clearly. They just dont want the CCP having that data. Which, okay, but I know a way nobody can have that data and we are all safe.

This would be better if it said "j-eye-na"

How tf do you think self driving cars train their models, Fortune.
