I hate texters that use zero punctuation like this. It's like having a stroke trying to read it.

[–] ech@lemm.ee 30 points 3 months ago

No punctuation on top of terrible grammar. It hurts.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I've heard that some younger people find punctuation "too aggressive" or something.

Ellipses... definitely.

Sentences ending a full stop. Somewhat.

Very context dependent though

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago (4 children)

I think this makes me old because I like using ellipses as a pause! Maybe I'll just go to writing the word uh in everywhere so people know my brain is old and trying to think of things as I write.

[–] Zoot@reddthat.com 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yeah until you've got your family texting you "We need to talk..." and then, the conversation is asking what you're doing this weekend.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I try to not put them at the end of the sentence, I'm not so old I don't get the implication of that! It's in the middle of the sentence as a break!

Or sometimes as a literary device to indicate an amount of time has passed.

[–] Funkytom467@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

The implication is that you know the next part of the sentence but keep it unwritten. The best exemple is when making a list, a, b c ...

Sometimes it's even just a indicator there's gonna be a next part, like the "We need to talk..."

Although the more degenerate use is to imply the "you know what i mean/imply", a bit like the english innit in some sens.

Depending on the day I use commas like they were on sale at Costco but are about to go bad any moment. I did the same thing with ellipses for years.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Me and commas are not friends because of this. I use them too often and need to stop! I still use too many when doing creative writing thingies.

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It's so liberating to use short sentences. You're writing a paragraph on a page. The reader is going to know that they all relate closely to each other. Make every clause a sentence! It's fine!

[–] Funkytom467@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

It is good, but i also like some commas too.

For less important propositions, or to have some propositions closer together. Just like paragraphs link some sentences together when having the same point.

I think having that registery and doing it right is really what's important. Short sentences is great advice because it breaks the habit of long ones, which we get from speaking.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

This is definitely an old person thing... no reason you can't rock it though!

[–] faultyproboscus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Ellipses as pauses is a leftover of telegrams which bled into the era of limited text messages(and/or charging by the text), because the financial incentives for long single messages were the same.

In the era of unlimited texting, though, we've dropped that convention because it's extra keystrokes. In fact, we've even dropped the period at the end of sentences in texts because you can just hit the send button as a thought separator, sending multiple texts.

Including the period is unnecessary extra information, so it is seen as formal at best or even a way to covey unhappiness, anger, or frustration.

Hope this helps! Note that none of this applies to longer form messages like this one.

hit the send button as a thought separator

This drives me nuts, that's what blank spaces are for. I don't like getting a half-dozen texts that blow up my phone, especially when I'm likely in a meeting or something. A text message should be a complete communication, with blank spaces to separate parts of the message.

For example:

I'll be home late tonight, the meeting went long. Should be there in 30 min.

BTW, should I pick up something for dinner?

My SIL would send that in like 7 texts somehow, whereas I'll send just one. I find it impolite to send so many, so I go out of my way to spend a few extra seconds making it nice for the other person to read.

What?! Really!? Who could possibly think this is aggressive?! Really?! Who?!

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

It's Fully Ramblomatic now.

[–] Vilian@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago

Skill issue

[–] cheers_queers@lemm.ee 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

my partner and her mom use voice to text without editing, and it looks just like this lol

Wow, double whammy, it's annoying to everyone on both sides of the text...

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 50 points 3 months ago (4 children)

That two hundred and sixty-nine unread messages make my brain hurt and fills me with existential dread.

It's like staring into the abyss and you see a notification pop up.

[–] Cap@kbin.melroy.org 26 points 3 months ago (3 children)

It's like work email. Mine were 100% read for 16 years. Then I let one go unread, then two, and now I'm up to just under 1,000 unread emails. It's an adrenaline rush, like Russian roulette. I doubt I'll read any replies to this comment! I need help.

[–] Gestrid@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 months ago

You guys check your emails?

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 3 months ago

Just try and stop me

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

I'd offer help but you wouldn't read it.

Plus I'm wildly unqualified.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 months ago (2 children)

If they're anything like me, they're piled up 2FA codes that I can't be bothered to delete

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I have tons of those. I still mark every single one of them read. Only time I ever leave anything unread is when I need a reminder to get back to it later.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

well look at you with your working executive function lol

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

It’s all cope! I didn’t finish college until age 40. Now I’m struggling to get a job and I’ve got half a dozen hobbies in various states of active / pause.

I was totally dysfunctional 20 years ago (just playing video games all the time) and even dropped out of high school before that. I’ve since learned coping strategies that work for me but it’s still way more difficult than it should be!

Make a filter and work with folders. If you can't, get a sane client software. Thunderbird, Evolution, Kmail, Claws are pretty good.

[–] dactylotheca@suppo.fi 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

ADHD lyfe. I literally have a bit over 13 000 unread emails.

[–] Hexarei@programming.dev 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Autism+ADHD life, I can't stand to have emails in my inbox for more than a day and I also can't be diligent enough to achieve that

[–] dactylotheca@suppo.fi 1 points 3 months ago

Yeah I gave up long ago. I regularly miss important emails but my life is kinda clown shoes anyhow so that's the least of my worries

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago

Posting this because of how much it is going to annoy people.

Wow, you can just paste images into the textarea, how sweet is that.

[–] HyonoKo@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 months ago

Hahaha came here to say the same.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 21 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Well, she's right about the movie.

Don't troll the dude. Requiem for a Dream must be watched high in order to fully grasp the plot.

Purple in the morning. Blue in the afternoon. Orange in the evening!

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I don't get high, would I still appreciate it?

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yep. It's a fantastic movie.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago
[–] Barzaria@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 months ago

Ass to ass.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

It bothers me that "Mom >" is centered and not "Mom" centered with the > jutting out a bit. It's off center from the M above it.

[–] Steamymoomilk@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago

"Its a meme Batman"

[–] Mango@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Ok but to be fair, that movie does give good reason for this.
