On this day in 1953, the U.S. and British governments initiated a coup d'état against the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammad Mosaddegh. Mosaddegh had been preparing to nationalize Iran's British-owned oil fields.

Mosaddegh had sought to audit the documents of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), later re-named British Petroleum, and to limit the company's control over Iranian oil reserves. When the AIOC refused to cooperate with the Iranian government, the parliament voted to nationalize Iran's oil industry and to expel foreign corporate representatives from the country.

In response, the British began a worldwide boycott of Iranian oil to pressure Iran economically and engaged in subterfuge to undermine Mosaddegh's government.

Judging Mosaddegh to be unreliable and fearing a communist takeover, Winston Churchill and the Eisenhower administration overthrew Iran's government. The coup action was also supported by the Iranian clergy, who opposed Mosaddegh's secularism.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) hired mobsters to stage pro-Shah riots and paid people to travel to Tehran and take over the streets of the city. Between 200 and 300 people were killed in the ensuing mayhem.

Mosaddegh was arrested, tried, and convicted of treason by the Shah's military court. Many of his supporters were imprisoned, several received the death penalty. Mosaddegh himself lived the rest of his life under house arrest, dying in 1967.

After the coup, the Shah ruled as a monarch for the next 26 years until he was overthrown in the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

Also nerds important news, looks like Xiaopang the orange dog was abused by its owner in other to make the videos, tweet

CW: animal abuse

These videos are reuploads in response to the backlash of xiao pang's treatment in 2022. his owner would sometimes hit him on live broadcasts and the stress responses were even more obvious. People also noticed how his lower teeth were missing compared to earlier videos in 2018.

Viewers suspected he would use needles to instigate certain reactions, as seen in that video. In one broadcast, the owner admitted that he needed to mistreat xiao pang in order to gain followers. The local provincial police was even involved with investigation at some point.

If you search "小胖 虐待" for evidence of xiao pang's abuse, articles were posted in 2022 at the height of this controversy on douyin. Given the outreach of many Chinese netizens, it is fair to assume that xiao pang was mistreated and we should stop sharing content of his abuse.

No!!! My glorious Xiaopang :(

I really hope other famous animals from China aren't in similar situations. I love sharing images of Uncle Bao Bao, Tole Tole, Dou Dou (Oye), and other pets with friends. But those generally aren't doing anything on cue, they just look funny, so I think it's less likely that they're being abused for content.

The Bioshock Game That Started It All 50:29

dead-dove-2 is this from an alternate universe where there's a dozen bioshock games? does it talk about system shock?

this is actually very bizarre its not a lets play, its not a video essay, this guy is like summarizing the plot and gameplay while editing himself into the gameworld

Ever since our shitty roommates moved out, their former bathroom has become my sanctuary. It's right in the middle of the place too, so there are no outside noises but the rumbling air vents and the narcotic piping of water through the walls. Also there's an actual bathtub in here that im gonna start constantly being in all the time like a specific type of organized crime guy

What's everyone's favorite media about androids/synthetic humans? They're a common element in science fiction but often end up being formulaic. I'm looking for some fresh takes on the topic.

My town (gentrified lib bastion) - organized Gaza protests and a Nakba day commemoration

Neighboring town (more exurban and Trumpish) - one guy holding a sign that says "Israel Did 9/11" in front of a strip mall

Just some random observations

"Covid 19 coverup" is the most biaoqing-copium shit ever, like there has been months where Wuhan was in lockdown and instead of preparing people media government were debating pointless shit about how lockdowns are le 1984 authoritarian measure.

so here's a question, i think it is quite difficult to roll rs without a sufficiently wet mouth. i know you can make a fairly similar and understandable sound without technically rolling but like is this just a skill issue? how can i get better?

I feel like there really should be a way to hold the unemployment office accountable for the pay they fucking owe me. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to call tomorrow and they're just going to like shrug over the phone

It's already bullshit that by design you don't get paid for your first week. They just call it a "waiting week." Like, what the fuck. But whatever

But like, I was unemployed 4 weeks, worked for another 4 weeks, and since I didn't certify my UI claim for 2 weeks (because I was working) it went inactive

I reactivated it the first week i was unemployed again, but it never gave me an option to certify for that week. Then when i certified the next week... they treat it the same as my fucking first fucking week again, not paying me

I think they owe me at minimum one fucking week, but really 2 because why the fuck should I have this non paying "first week" AGAIN just because I worked a month? It's so fucking stupid, like i am so mad I want whoever is responsible for this to be tortured to death. Eaten by fucking rats or something, fuck

I really wish I had a friend that was a lawyer or could afford a lawyer but then I wouldn't be so concerned about being fucked out of 500 dollars

I was a guest (through my partner) to someone's surprise birthday party so didn't know anyone that was there. At some point, we were all sitting around a table, a couple began talking about going to a recent drag show but felt it became 'too political' when the drag queen kept talking about Palestine etc.. The couple accused the drag queen of speaking without having all of the information to which I asked what information they were missing and the girl responded with something along the lines of how LGBTQ individuals would be treated in Gaza/Palestine, being a Muslim country. I was immediately filled with rage and contempt for what I'm hearing and just made a point that oppressed peoples from different parts of society can and should support one another but still really feel like I should have expressed more of what was racing through my mind that actually she's the misinformed moron and boohoo that your fun evening was soured by someone advocating for Palestine.

Edit: also just making the connection now that this thread is about the Iranian coup d'etat because I thought about this event (and more current events) when her boyfriend, who said he is from Iranian heritage, didn't agree with Iranian kids being taught at a young age to trample over the Israeli flag. So weird

Last night i emptied out the deep fryer at work and had a mild panic when i couldn't find any more fryer oil. The chef told me where he put it and lol it's "creamy" fryer oil and it looks like cum, lmao. If the other cooks don't know about it I can only imagine what they're thinking r/n as they stare at a fryer filled with it

Idk why you'd ever want opaque, "creamy" deep fryer oil

How does one 'read theory' ? I try to read Marx, engels, Lenin and they are always referencing some shit or some group ive never heard of and I get confused and lose interest. I try to read Bakunin and his ADHD is even worse then mine, I can't follow it for shit. And i dont know what a 'Hegel' is and at this point im afraid to ask.

I'm frankly shit at reading anything beyond graphic novels but I want to be better at leftism

Still, four years without a symptomatic case, and it's not definitely the ronavid yet. If I die give all my stuff to @sorosfootsoldier. The worst part about these shitty roommates is the state they leave the kitchen, which makes me realize how much a clean kitchen makes me feel more in control of my life, and how i never really had one for a very very long time.

it's actually in a good state now, but god knows they're only a single night of smoking the devils most ditch-ass weed before frying up a hamburger and leaving a mess everywhere including MY FUCKING PANS THEY JUST LEAVE DIRTY ON THE STOVE

Finally watching the second animated Spider-verse movie and them constantly saying "we gotta' save the canon" and whatever is some of the cringeful shit ever to me. I cannot handle how fucking lame that concept for a film is. Might as well just say "we gotta' save the brand."

Yknow I'm surprised we haven't already seen a perverse fusion of AI grift bro and NFT grift bro. Where are the AI generated NFTs being billed as worth their weight (ironically nothing) in gold

Why do games default to not muting when they are in the background? Yeah it's nice that streamers don't have the sound cut out every time they alt-tab to discord to message a minor, but they should be the ones who have to change the setting, not us regular folk.
