The original opening sequence had Gordon completing several hundred grant applications, but it didn't playtest well.

Imagine Papers Please, but all border crossers are Gordons, some of them carrying suitcases with their labwork you decide (not) to open. You click one of them open and you ether get attacked by a furious cat, or poisoned by chemicals, or both. And some of them do that intentionally, or carry a crowbar taped to their cock, or cause a cascade resonance to your microwaving breakfast if they are especially pissed. These Gordons, man. The headache is granted.

Don’t forget the Gordon that steals your stuff from your locker! And the one that lets a headcrab run amok

> experiment goes horribly wrong

I wonder why, maybe because he wasn't an experimental physicist?

[-] magic_lobster_party@fedia.io 65 points 2 months ago

Well someone must pull that switch and push that cart. Only a highly trained professional from MIT can do it.

[-] Klear@lemmy.world 22 points 2 months ago

Gordon doesn't need to hear all this. He's a highly-trained professional.

[-] InFerNo@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago

I played this game so much I can hear this

[-] nagaram@startrek.website 20 points 2 months ago

They had an auto tram that could carry everyone across the entire facility and was sophisticated enough to stop for a robotic auto loader.

I feel like it would have been trivial to ha e acomputer Controlled cart and, if they really wanted, a humanoid robot to press the button.

[-] Dicska@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago

Or, you know, just hardwire it instead of placing a button within the risky zone.

[-] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 months ago

The test chamber is twenty years older than the auto loader. Also the anomalous materials fritz human brains less than they fritz complex electronics.

But if it weren't for the recent breakthroughs and new specimens, they would have modernized the AM division next year!

[-] NOPper@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

You honestly believe they had the technology to run a pair of 18/2 conductor to that button?! I work in the industry, and frankly you're just being silly.

Black Mesa was an insane confluence of theoretical and practical physics. I mean they're inventing fucking interdimensional travel and handheld laser weapons. Also there's a security guard that jokes to Gordon "looks like you're in the barrel today" which implies everyone on the team takes turns in the suit. That was just Gordon's day; he probably does spend most days in an office somewhere doing math

[-] Klear@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

Or the guard knows some dirty jokes...

[-] BlemboTheThird@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

It is a dirty joke, one that implies everyone takes turns in the test chamber, aka the barrel.

[-] groet@feddit.org 38 points 2 months ago

They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics.

I said, I had a theoretical degree in physics.

[-] DrBob@lemmy.ca 31 points 2 months ago

My post-doc paid $35k and lasted 5 years. You'd switch fields too.

[-] Rookwood@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago

Should have just went into STEM dude /s

[-] nagaram@startrek.website 13 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Me when I go into stem but I refuse to get a job working in an unethical field (I'm poor)

[-] DrBob@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

/cries in biomedicine

[-] misterundercoat@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago

Gordon lied on his resume and his bosses knew it.

[-] joyjoy@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago

That MIT education really pays for itself.

[-] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

I am also a "theoretical" physicist.
